Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) harm retinal blood vessels in the eye causing visual deficiency. The appearance and structure of blood vessels in retinal images play an essential part in the diagnoses of an eye sicknesses. We proposed a less computational unsupervised automated technique with promising results for detection of retinal vasculature by using morphological hessian based approach and region based Otsu thresholding. Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) and morphological filters have been used for enhancement and to remove low frequency noise or geometrical objects, respectively. The hessian matrix and eigenvalues approach used has been in a modified form at two different scales to extract wide and thin vessel enhanced images separately. Otsu thresholding has been further applied in a novel way to classify vessel and non-vessel pixels from both enhanced images. Finally, postprocessing steps has been used to eliminate the unwanted region/segment, non-vessel pixels, disease abnormalities and noise, to obtain a final segmented image. The proposed technique has been analyzed on the openly accessible DRIVE (Digital Retinal Images for Vessel Extraction) and STARE (STructured Analysis of the REtina) databases along with the ground truth data that has been precisely marked by the experts.  相似文献

Plant deaths had been observed in the sub-alpine and alpine areas of Australia. Although no detailed aetiology was established, patches of dying vegetation and progressive thinning of canopy suggested the involvement of root pathogens. Baiting of roots and associated rhizosphere soil from surveys conducted in mountainous regions New South Wales and Tasmania resulted in the isolation of eight Phytophthora species; Phytophthora cactorum, Phytophthora cryptogea, Phytophthora fallax, Phytophthora gonapodyides, Phytophthora gregata, Phytophthora pseudocryptogea, and two new species, Phytophthora cacuminis sp. nov and Phytophthora oreophila sp. nov, described here. P. cacuminis sp. nov is closely related to P. fallax, and was isolated from asymptomatic Eucalyptus coccifera and species from the family Proteaceae in Mount Field NP in Tasmania. P. oreophila sp. nov, was isolated from a disturbed alpine herbfield in Kosciuzsko National Park. The low cardinal temperature for growth of the new species suggest they are well adapted to survive under these conditions, and should be regarded as potential threats to the diverse flora of sub-alpine/alpine ecosystems. P. gregata and P. cryptogea have already been implicated in poor plant health. Tests on a range of alpine/subalpine plant species are now needed to determine their pathogenicity, host range and invasive potential.  相似文献

Forty two-month-old plants of Dalbergia sissoo and D. latifolia were subjected for 56 d to water deficit induced by withholding water. Drought stress caused a significant reduction in plant height, stem diameter, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) in both species, but the reduction was greater in D. sissoo than in D. latifolia. Water use efficiency (P N/E) was adversely affected due to water stress only in D. latifolia, and intrinsic water use efficiency (P N/g s) was increased in both species. There was a slight effect of water stress on variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) (quantum yield of photosystem 2) in both species, but the species did not differ significantly in this attribute.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of crude ethanolic extracts and fractions of the ariel parts and the fruits of Galium tricornutum subsp. longipedunculatum, traditionally used in northern areas of Pakistan for treating microbial infections of skin. Extracts and their fractions were tested against six bacteria and six fungal strains using the hole diffusion method and macrodilution method. All extracts and fractions possessed significant antimicrobial effect. Four fungal strains, Candida albicans, Trichophyton longifusus, Fusarium.solani and Candida glabrata, showed interesting susceptibility profiles when evaluated using the extracts and fractions with MICs ranging from 0.18 to 200 mg/mL. In case of bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi were significantly susceptible to the extracts and fractions with MICs ranging from 0.12 to 200 mg/mL. Comparative results were carried out using imepenem, miconazole and amphotericin B as standard antibiotics.  相似文献

Flaviviruses are one of the most clinically important pathogens and their infection rates are increasing steadily. The phenylthiazole ring system has provided a template for the design and synthesis of antiviral agents that inhibit the flaviviruses by targeting their E-protein. Unfortunately, there is a correlation between phenylthiazole antiflaviviral activity and the presence of the reactive and therefore potentially toxic mono- or dibromomethyl moieties at thiazole-C4. Adding a linear hydrophobic tail para to the phenyl ring led to a new class of phenylthiazole antiflaviviral compounds that lack the toxic dibromomethyl moiety. This led to development of a drug-like phenylthiazole 12 that had high antiflaviviral selectivity (TI=147).  相似文献

Tylosin is a veterinary antibiotic and is commercially produced using Streptomyces fradiae. Previously, we developed a mutant γ-1 of S. fradiae NRRL-2702 with a 6.87-fold increase in tylosin yield as compared with the wild-type strain through irradiation mutagenesis. The present studies were conducted to explore mutational changes in regulatory genes (TylQ, TylP, TylS, TylR, and TylT) of Tyl cluster that may lead to an enhanced expression of tylosin. Expression analysis by RT-PCR revealed that TylQ was switched off earlier in mutant γ-1 while no change in expression pattern of TylP was observed between the wild-type and mutant γ-1 strains. However, a point mutation with a substitution of T to A was recorded at position 214 in the 420-bp product of TylP from mutant γ-1 that resulted in a change of one amino acid (serine to threonine) at position 72. Moreover, no mutation in the nucleotide sequence of TylS, TylR, and TylT genes was detected.  相似文献

In continued efforts to develop enzymatic assays for lysosomal storage diseases appropriate for newborn screening laboratories we have synthesized novel and specific enzyme substrates for Maroteaux–Lamy (MPS VI) and Morquio A (MPS IVA) diseases. The sulfated monosaccharide derivatives were found to be converted to product by the respective enzyme in blood from healthy patients but not by blood from patients with the relevant lysosomal storage disease. The latter result shows that the designed substrates are highly selective for the respective enzymes.  相似文献

Background

Breast and cervical cancers have emerged as major global health challenges and disproportionately lead to excess morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) when compared to high-income countries. The objective of this paper was to highlight key findings, recommendations, and gaps in research and practice identified through a scoping study of recent reviews in breast and cervical cancer in LMICs.

Methods

We conducted a scoping study based on the six-stage framework of Arskey and O’Malley. We searched PubMed, Cochrane Reviews, and CINAHL with the following inclusion criteria: 1) published between 2005-February 2015, 2) focused on breast or cervical cancer 3) focused on LMIC, 4) review article, and 5) published in English.

Results

Through our systematic search, 63 out of the 94 identified cervical cancer reviews met our selection criteria and 36 of the 54 in breast cancer. Cervical cancer reviews were more likely to focus upon prevention and screening, while breast cancer reviews were more likely to focus upon treatment and survivorship. Few of the breast cancer reviews referenced research and data from LMICs themselves; cervical cancer reviews were more likely to do so. Most reviews did not include elements of the PRISMA checklist.

Conclusion

Overall, a limited evidence base supports breast and cervical cancer control in LMICs. Further breast and cervical cancer prevention and control studies are necessary in LMICs.  相似文献

The liver has a great capacity to regenerate. Hepatocytes, the parenchymal cells of the liver, can regenerate in one of two ways: hepatocyte- or biliary-driven liver regeneration. In hepatocyte-driven liver regeneration, regenerating hepatocytes are derived from preexisting hepatocytes, whereas, in biliary-driven regeneration, regenerating hepatocytes are derived from biliary epithelial cells (BECs). For hepatocyte-driven liver regeneration, there are excellent rodent models that have significantly contributed to the current understanding of liver regeneration. However, no such rodent model exists for biliary-driven liver regeneration. We recently reported on a zebrafish liver injury model in which BECs extensively give rise to hepatocytes upon severe hepatocyte loss. In this model, hepatocytes are specifically ablated by a pharmacogenetic means. Here we present in detail the methods to ablate hepatocytes and to analyze the BEC-driven liver regeneration process. This hepatocyte-specific ablation model can be further used to discover the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of biliary-driven liver regeneration. Moreover, these methods can be applied to chemical screens to identify small molecules that augment or suppress liver regeneration.  相似文献

A three-dimensional model of the reaction-diffusion processes of a neurotransmitter and its ligand receptor in a disk shaped volume is proposed which represents the transmission process of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft in the neuromuscular junction. The behavior of the reaction-diffusion system is described by a three-dimensional diffusion equation with nonlinear reaction terms due to the rate processes of acetylcholine with the receptor. A new stable and accurate numerical method is used to solve the equations with Neumann boundaries in cylindrical coordinates. The simulation analysis agrees with experimental measurements of end-plate current, and agrees well with the results of the conformational state of the acetylcholine receptor as a function of time and acetylcholine concentration of earlier investigations with a smaller error compared to experiments. Asymmetric emission of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft and the subsequent effects on open receptor population is simulated. Sensitivity of the open receptor dynamics to the changes in the diffusion parameters and neuromuscular junction volume is investigated. The effects of anisotropic diffusion and non-symmetric emission of transmitter at the presynaptic membrane is simulated.  相似文献
