Advances in ecology during the past decade have led to a much more detailed understanding of the potential negative consequences of species' introductions. Moreover, recent studies of mycorrhizal symbionts have led to an increased knowledge of the potential utility of fungal inoculations in agricultural, horticultural and ecological management. The intentional movement of mycorrhizal fungal species is growing, but the concomitant potential for negative ecological consequences of invasions by mycorrhizal fungi is poorly understood. We assess the degree to which introductions of mycorrhizal fungi may lead to unintended negative, and potentially costly, consequences. Our purpose is to make recommendations regarding appropriate management guidelines and highlight top priority research needs. Given the difficulty in discerning invasive species problems associated with mycorrhizal inoculations, we recommend the following. First, careful assessment documenting the need for inoculation, and the likelihood of success, should be conducted prior to inoculation because inoculations are not universally beneficial. Second, invasive species problems are costly and often impossible to control by the time they are recognized. We recommend using local inoculum sources whenever possible. Third, non-sterile cultures of inoculum can result in the movement of saprobes and pathogens as well as mutualists. We recommend using material that has been produced through sterile culture when local inoculum is not available. Finally, life-history characteristics of inoculated fungi may provide general guidelines relative to the likelihood of establishment and spread. We recommend that, when using non-local fungi, managers choose fungal taxa that carry life-history traits that may minimize the likelihood of deleterious invasive species problems. Additional research is needed on the potential of mycorrhizal fungi to spread to non-target areas and cause ecological damage.  相似文献

In the era of evidence-based medicine, new treatment protocols and interventions should be routinely evaluated for their efficacy by reviewing the available evidence. In the cleft literature, nasoalveolar molding has garnered attention over the last decade as a new option for improving nasal form and symmetry before primary surgical repair. Systematic review of the evidence is, however, currently lacking. This review evaluates whether nasoalveolar molding can improve nasal symmetry and form toward the norm, as well as whether nasoalveolar molding demonstrates advantages over other protocols in achieving this goal. A literature search of five databases plus relevant reference lists retrieved 98 articles regarding nasoalveolar molding, 21 of which reported objective outcome measures of nasal symmetry and form, and six of which were able to be given evidence level ratings, all in the unilateral cleft population. Statistical analysis was not possible given the range of techniques and outcomes. Studies of bilateral cleft were not given evidence level ratings, given the inability to separate the effects of nasoalveolar molding from other primary nasal interventions in studies that would have otherwise been rated. In unilateral cleft lip-cleft palate, there was some evidence that nasoalveolar molding may improve nasal outcomes, though comparison with other techniques was limited. Despite a relative paucity of high-level evidence, nasoalveolar molding appears to be a promising technique that deserves further study.  相似文献

The present study investigated both the direct and delayed effects of a 50 Hz, 100 microT magnetic field on human performance. Eighty subjects completed a visual duration discrimination task, half being exposed to the field and the other half sham exposed. The delayed effects of this field were also examined in a recognition memory task that followed immediately upon completion of the discrimination task, Unlike our earlier studies, we were unable to find any effects of the field on reaction time and accuracy in the visual discrimination task. However, the field had a delayed effect on memory, producing a decrement in recognition accuracy. We conclude that after many years of experimentation, finding a set of magnetic field parameters and human performance measures that reliably yield magnetic field effects is proving elusive. Yet the large number of significant findings suggests that further research is warranted.  相似文献

Plum pox virus (PPV) is a devastating stone fruit disease of major importance, and better understanding of the genetic control of resistance to this trait would be useful for more efficient development of resistant cultivars. Previous studies have reported a locus of major effect from PPV resistance on linkage group 1. The current study confirms these results by mapping plum pox virus resistance in a F1 progeny issued from a cross between “Harlayne”, as a PPV-resistant parent, and “Vestar” as a susceptible parent. The hybrids were grafted simultaneously and subsequently inoculated with the PPV-M and D strains. The symptom scoring on leaves was performed nine times over two vegetative cycles. Marker–trait associations were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis (KW) non-parametric test, and the PPV resistance loci were mapped using composite interval mapping (CIM). We show that both analyses (KW and CIM) highlighted the upper part of linkage group 1 of the apricot “Harlayne” genitor.  相似文献

We investigated the mating system of shy albatrosses Thalassarche cauta by combining behavioural observations during the pre-laying period with genetic paternity analysis. Genetic data on the mating systems of several procellariiform seabirds have recently become available, but data on the reproductive behaviour of these species are rarely obtained. Our main aims were to describe the copulatory behaviour of this species and identify how males achieve within-pair and extra-pair paternity (EPP). Most copulations occurred on the nest, were unforced and were within-pair. Females controlled the success of copulations and were observed soliciting extra-pair matings. Within-pair and extra-pair copulations were behaviourally similar. A low frequency (7–10%, n =29 chicks) of EPP was detected despite male use of frequent copulation as a paternity guard. The pre-laying foraging exodus of female shy albatrosses differed from that in other albatrosses: it was relatively short in length, lasting c . 2 days, and within-pair copulations occurred after the female's return 2 days before laying. This may reflect the close proximity of feeding grounds to the breeding colony.  相似文献

A trade-off between survival to sexual maturity and mating success is common across alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), and can lead to tactical disruptive selection on shared traits (i.e. positive selection gradient in one tactic, and negative selection gradient in another). We were interested in examining the theoretical possibility of tactical disruptive selection on intrinsic growth rate. The male ARTs in Xiphophorus multilineatus express two distinct life histories: “courters” optimize mating success by maturing later at larger size and coaxing females to mate, while “sneakers” optimize survival to sexual maturity by maturing earlier at a smaller size, using both coaxing and coercive mating behaviors. In addition to differences in mating behaviors, body length, body depth, and the pigment pattern vertical bars, courter males grow faster than sneaker males. We present a new hypothesis for differences in growth rates between genetically influenced ARTs. The “growth-maturity optimization” hypothesis suggests that ARTs with differences in the probability of surviving to sexual maturity may have different optimal growth rates, leading to tactical disruptive selection. We also present a simple model to suggest that when considering both a cost and benefit to faster growth, tactical disruptive selection on growth rates is theoretically possible. In our model, the value that determines when tactical disruptive selection on growth rate will occur is the increase in probability of survival to sexual maturity gained through faster growth multiplied by the cost of faster growth (reduced longevity). Finally, we present empirical evidence to support the prediction that faster growth has a cost in X. multilineatus: in a controlled laboratory setting, courter males that did not survive 1.2 years past sexual maturity grew faster as juveniles (14–70 days) than those that survived.  相似文献
