Ecological theory emphasizes competitive interactions between plant species when explaining primary succession in plants. Ecosystem processes, such as nutrient accumulation, are often regarded as independent, steering successional changes without being affected by the interacting plant species. We present experimental evidence that plant species in wet dune slack systems are able to affect ecosystem processes in their favor by reducing the rate of nitrogen accumulation by coupled nitrification–denitrification, promoting their competitive position. We compared denitrification rates of two early successional species having radial oxygen loss (ROL) with two non-ROL late successional species in a mesocosm experiment. The denitrification rates were significantly higher in mesocosms planted with early successional species Littorella uniflora (P<0.001) and Schoenus nigricans (P<0.05), relative to the rates found in the presence of non-ROL species, Carex nigra and Calamagrostis epigejos . We analyzed the consequences of enhanced nitrogen loss on the competition between an early and a late successional species by means of a simple theoretical model. Our analysis revealed that early successional species capable of ROL might retard successional changes and lock the ecosystem in an unproductive state for an extended period of time. We emphasize that understanding of ecosystem processes is crucial in successful conservation of high biodiversity vegetation in wet dune slacks.  相似文献

Phenotypically plastic changes in response to variation in perceived predation risk are widespread, but little is known about if and how social environment modulates induced responses to predation risk. We investigated the influence of perceived predation risk (i.e. chemical cues from a predator) and social environment (i.e. one, two or 20 individuals reared together) on three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) morphology in a factorial common garden experiment. We found that exposure to chemical cues from potential predators did not influence growth or body condition or induce more robust morphological defences (i.e. lateral plate numbers and dorsal spine lengths). However, sticklebacks exposed to predator cues developed longer caudal peduncles and larger eyes as compared with fish from the control treatment. As these responses may improve sticklebacks’ ability to avoid piscine predation, they might be adaptive. Social environment/density also influenced expression of some traits, but these effects were independent of predation‐risk treatment effects. In general, these results suggest that apart from the classic morphological defence structures, which appear mostly constitutive, three‐spined sticklebacks are capable of expressing potentially adaptive morphological responses to chemical cues from potential predators.  相似文献

Structures of somatically acquired murine leukemia virus (MuLV) genomes present in the DNA of a large panel of MuLV-induced C57BL and BALB/c B and non-T/non-B cell lymphomas were compared with those present in MuLV-induced T-cell lymphomas induced in the same low-"spontaneous"-lymphoma-incidence mice. Analyses were performed with probes specific for the gp70, p15E, and U3-long terminal repeat (LTR) regions of ecotropic AKV MuLV and a mink cell focus-forming virus (MCF)-LTR probe annealing with U3-LTR sequences of a unique endogenous xenotropic MuLV, which also hybridizes with U3-LTR sequences of a substantial portion of somatically acquired MCF genomes in spontaneous AKR thymomas. The DNAs of both T- and B-cell tumors induced by neonatal inoculation with the highly oncogenic C57BL-derived MCF 1233 virus predominantly contain integrated MCF proviruses. In contrast, the DNAs of more slowly developing B and non-T/non-B cell lymphomas induced by poorly oncogenic ecotropic or MCF C57BL MuLV isolates mostly contain somatically acquired ecotropic MuLV genomes. Approximately 50% of the spontaneous C57BL lymphoma DNAs contain somatically acquired MuLV genomes. None of the integrated MuLV proviruses annealed with the MCF-LTR probe, which indicates a clear difference in LTR structure with a substantial portion of the somatically acquired MuLV genomes present in the DNA of spontaneous AKR thymomas. This study stresses a dominant role of MuLV with ecotropic gp70 and LTR sequences in the development of slowly arising MuLV-induced B and non-T/non-B cell lymphomas.  相似文献

The effect of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) gyrase inhibitors coumermycin A1, novobiocin, and oxolinic acid on ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis in Escherichia coli was studied in vivo and in vitro. Preferential inhibition of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis was observed. No effect of oxolinic acid and coumermycin on rRNA synthesis was seen in mutants having a DNA gyrase which is resistant to these inhibitors. In a temperature-sensitive DNA gyrase mutant rRNA synthesis was decreased at nonpermissive temperatures. Thus, a functional DNA gyrase is required for rRNA synthesis. Purified DNA gyrase had no effect on rRNA synthesis in a purified system. However, DNA gyrase does show preferential stimulation of rRNA synthesis in a system supplemented with other proteins. Apparently, DNA gyrase stimulation of rRNA synthesis requires another protein.  相似文献

Dissociated newt spermatids with an initial cell length of 20-35 microns increased in length at an average rate of 35-46 microns during 5 days of culture at 22 degrees C. 10(-5) M vinblastine sulfate shortened the length of nearly all the spermatids of various initial lengths to that of round spermatids within 24 h at 22 degrees C. Application of vinblastine to the spermatids immediately following initiation of nuclear elongation caused the nuclei to become completely round within 1 h. 3 X 10(-6) M colcemid, 10(-4) M colchicine, 2 X 10(-5) M nocodazole and 10(-4) M griseofulvin also shortened the spermatid length. The effects of these five antimicrotubule agents were irreversible. Neither 10(-4) M beta-, gamma-lumicolchicine nor 1.0 micrograms/ml cytochalasin B (CB) had any effect on spermatid elongation. Spermatids incubated at 4 degrees C for 6 days shortened by 20-50%, but after transfer to 22 degrees C they started to elongate. An ultrastructural study showed that during nuclear elongation the number of microtubules increased in proportion to the elongation, and that the microtubules surrounded the whole nucleus from its apical to caudal end. After addition of vinblastine many microtubular crystals appeared in the cytoplasm of the spermatids. It was concluded that microtubules are a prerequisite for nuclear elongation of newt spermatids, and it is speculated that microtubules act directly in the initiation and continuation of the nuclear elongation of newt spermatids.  相似文献

Yeast populations found on the tropical timber tree species Milicia excelsa showed very little diversity at the genus and species level. Of 62 isolates, 87% were Cryptococcus laurentii , 5% Candida humicola , 3% Candida curvata , 1.5% Candida membranaefaciens , 1.5% Rhodotorula minuta and 1.5% Rhodotorula rubra . Approximately half of the Crypt. laurentii strains had unusual metabolic profiles when compared with the Crypt. laurentii strains in the profile library of the APILAB yeast identification software. All isolated strains were non-pathogenic and did not show antagonism against Botrytis cinerea in an in vitro plate assay. However, three strains of Crypt. laurentii suppressed disease development of B. cinerea in a leaf disk bio-assay. This indicates that protection of leaves against opportunistic fungal diseases may be part of the ecological function of Crypt. laurentii populations on Milicia leaves and the potential of this yeast species for biological control.  相似文献

The electrochemical biosensors based on poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and choline oxidase (ChO) enzymes were fabricated on carbon fibre (CF) substrate. The electropolymerized PoPD was used to reduce the interfering substances. The electrode assembly was completed by depositing functionalized carbon nano tubes (FCNTs) and Nafion (Naf). Amperometric detection of acetylcholine (ACh) and choline (Ch) were realized at an applied potential of +750 mV vs Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl). At pH 7.4, the final assembly, Naf-FCNTs/AChE-ChO((10:1))/PoPD/CF(Elip), was observed to have high sensitivity towards Ch (6.3±0.3 μA mM(-1)) and ACh (5.8±0.3 μA mM(-1)), linear range for Ch (K(M)=0.52±0.03 mM) and ACh (K(M)=0.59±0.07 mM), and for Ch the highest ascorbic acid blocking capacity (97.2±2 1mM AA). It had a response time of <5s and with 0.045 μM limit of detection. Studies on different ratio (ACh/Ch) revealed that 10:1, gave best overall response.  相似文献
