The potential of Mg(x)Co(2-)(x)O(2) as heterogeneous reusable catalyst in transesterification of palm oil to methyl ester was investigated. The catalyst was prepared via co-precipitation of the metal hydroxides at different Mg-Co ratios. Mg(1.7)Co(0.3)O(2) catalyst was more active than Mg(0.3)Co(1.7)O(2) in the transesterification of palm oil with methanol. The catalysts calcined at temperature 300 °C for 4 h resulted in highly active oxides and the highest transesterification of 90% was achieved at methanol/oil molar ratio of 9:1, catalyst loading of 5.00 wt.%, reaction temperature of 150 °C and reaction time of 2 h. The catalyst could easily be removed from reaction mixture, but showed 50% decrease in activity when reused due to leaching of active sites. 相似文献

Vaccination is the most cost-effective way to reduce the considerable disease burden of seasonal influenza. Although seasonal influenza vaccines are effective, their performance in the elderly and immunocompromised individuals would benefit from improvement. Major problems related to the development and production of pandemic influenza vaccines are response time and production capacity as well as vaccine efficacy and safety. Several improvements can be envisaged. Vaccine production technologies based on embryonated chicken eggs may be replaced by cell culture techniques. Reverse genetics techniques can speed up the generation of seed viruses and new mathematical modelling methods improve vaccine strain selection. Better understanding of the correlates of immune-mediated protection may lead to new vaccine targets besides the viral haemagglutinin, like the neuraminidase and M2 proteins. In addition, the role of cell-mediated immunity could be better exploited. New adjuvants have recently been shown to increase the breadth and the duration of influenza vaccine-induced protection. Other studies have shown that influenza vaccines based on different viral vector systems may also induce broad protection. It is to be expected that these developments may lead to more universal influenza vaccines that elicit broader and longer protection, and can be produced more efficiently. 相似文献

The effect of altitude on four basic properties of the pacemaker controlling the circadian rhythm of oviposition in two strains of Drosophila ananassae was determined. The high altitude (HA) strain from Badrinath (5123 m above sea level) had a low amplitude peak in the forenoon while the low altitude (LA) strain from Firozpur (179 m a.s.l.) had a high amplitude peak after the lights-off of LD 12:12 cycles. Free running periods in continuous darkness were about 22.6 and 27.4 h in the HA and LA strains, respectively. The light pulse phase response curve (PRC) for the HA strain showed a low amplitude and a dead zone of 8h; the ratio for the advance to delay region (A/D) was less than 1, while the PRC for the LA strain had a high amplitude, which was devoid of a dead zone and showed a ratio of A/D > 1. The magnitude of the delay phase shifts at CT 18 evoked by light pulses of 1 h duration, but varying light intensity was significantly different in the HA and LA strain, which suggests that the photic sensitivity of the clock photoreceptors mediating the phase shifts had been affected by the altitude. 相似文献

The amnioserosa is an extraembryonic epithelium that evolved in higher cyclorrhaphan flies from distinct serosal and amniotic epithelia. The underlying genetic mechanism of this evolutionary transition is unknown. Amnioserosa development of Drosophila correlates with novel expression characteristics of the homeobox gene zerknüllt (zen), including a broad zen expression domain in the syncytial blastoderm and the complete absence of postgastrular zen expression. Here we examine the functional significance of these features by altering the activity profile of zen in Megaselia (a lower cyclorrhaphan fly with distinct serosal and amniotic epithelia) and Drosophila, and by examining in Megaselia the function of u-shaped group (ush-group) genes, which in Drosophila maintain the amnioserosa after gastrulation when zen is no longer expressed. In Megaselia, loss of postgastrular zen expression abrogates serosa development but allows amnion development. Ectopic expression of zen in early Megaselia embryos allows serosa formation but perturbs amnion development. Megaselia homologues of u-shaped group genes are not essential for serosa formation but mediate germband retraction and dorsal closure. Finally, ectopic postgastrular zen expression in Drosophila causes an enlargement of amnioserosa cells and interferes with the morphogenetic functions of the amnioserosa. Our results suggest that the origin of the amnioserosa involved the loss of postgastrular zen expression from extraembryonic tissue, that the early broad expression domain of Drosophila zen evolved afterwards, and that the ush-group genes ancestrally played a role in morphogenetic functions of the amnion. 相似文献

Little information regarding the composition of the gut microbiota in preterm infants is available. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bacterial diversity in faeces of preterm infants, using analysis of randomly cloned 16S rRNA genes and PCR-TTGE (temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis) profiles, to determine whether noncultivated bacteria represented an important part of the community. The 288 clones obtained from faecal samples of 16 preterm infants were classified into 25 molecular species. All but one molecular species had a cultivated representative in public databases: molecular tools did not reveal any unexplored diversity. The mean number of molecular species per infant was 3.25, ranging from one to eight. There was a high interindividual variability. The main groups encountered were the Enterobacteriaceae family and the genera Enterococcus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Seven preterm infants were colonized by anaerobes and only four by bifidobacteria. TTGE profiles were composed of one to nine bands (mean value: 4.3). Furthermore, 51 of 59 clones (86%) comigrated with a band of the corresponding faecal sample. This study will form a comparative framework for other studies, e.g. on the faecal microbiota of preterm infants with different pathologies or the impact of diet on colonization. 相似文献

Retinoblastoma-binding protein-6 (RBBP6) plays a facilitating role, through its RING finger-like domain, in the ubiquitination of p53 by Hdm2 that is suggestive of E4-like activity. Although the presence of eight conserved cysteine residues makes it highly probable that the RING finger-like domain coordinates two zinc ions, analysis of the primary sequence suggests an alternative classification as a member of the U-box family, the members of which do not bind zinc ions. We show here that despite binding two zinc ions, the domain adopts a homodimeric structure highly similar to those of a number of U-boxes. Zinc ions could be replaced by cadmium ions without significantly disrupting the structure or the stability of the domain, although the rate of substitution was an order of magnitude slower than any previous measurement, suggesting that the structure is particularly stable, a conclusion supported by the high thermal stability of the domain. A hallmark of U-box-containing proteins is their association with chaperones, with which they cooperate in eliminating irretrievably unfolded proteins by tagging them for degradation by the proteasome. Using a yeast two-hybrid screen, we show that RBBP6 interacts with chaperones Hsp70 and Hsp40 through its N-terminal ubiquitin-like domain. Taken together with the structural similarities to U-box-containing proteins, our data suggest that RBBP6 plays a role in chaperone-mediated ubiquitination and possibly in protein quality control. 相似文献

Diabetes mellitus remains a burden worldwide in spite of the availability of numerous antidiabetic drugs. Honey is a natural substance produced by bees from nectar. Several evidence-based health benefits have been ascribed to honey in the recent years. In this review article, we highlight findings which demonstrate the beneficial or potential effects of honey in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), on the gut microbiota, in the liver, in the pancreas and how these effects could improve glycemic control and metabolic derangements. In healthy subjects or patients with impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes mellitus, various studies revealed that honey reduced blood glucose or was more tolerable than most common sugars or sweeteners. Pre-clinical studies provided more convincing evidence in support of honey as a potential antidiabetic agent than clinical studies did. The not-too-impressive clinical data could mainly be attributed to poor study designs or due to the fact that the clinical studies were preliminary. Based on the key constituents of honey, the possible mechanisms of action of antidiabetic effect of honey are proposed. The paper also highlights the potential impacts and future perspectives on the use of honey as an antidiabetic agent. It makes recommendations for further clinical studies on the potential antidiabetic effect of honey. This review provides insight on the potential use of honey, especially as a complementary agent, in the management of diabetes mellitus. Hence, it is very important to have well-designed, randomized controlled clinical trials that investigate the reproducibility (or otherwise) of these experimental data in diabetic human subjects. 相似文献
