The 21st century has brought new challenges to the agri-food industry due to population growth, global warming, and greater public awareness of environmental issues. Ensuring global food security for future generations is crucial. However, pests, weeds, and diseases still significantly contribute to crop losses, and the availability of effective conventional synthetic pesticides is decreasing. To address this, new and diverse pest management tools are needed. One pest management tool showing potential for invertebrate pest management is the exploitation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—in particular, the compounds 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone. This review aims to explore the extent to which 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone show potential in the future management of invertebrate crop and animal pests. A significant increase in the rate of publication of literature on the use of 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone in crop protection since 2018 is identified by this review, therefore, showing the potential importance of these compounds for use in future pest management. This review also identifies key interactions between naturally occurring biosynthesised 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone, and a range of invertebrate targets. Many of these interactions with key crop pests are sourced from the taxonomic families Lamiaceae, Fabaceae, and Trichomaceae. However, analysis of the practical application of these sources in an integrated pest management programme identifies clear limitations with the use of naturally occurring biosynthesised 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone. Rather, future focus should be placed on the development and exploitation of synthesised nature identical 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone for use as a biopesticide product. Overall, 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone show potential for exploitation in future crop protection, being abundant in source and diversity of invertebrate interactions. However, their use as a naturally occurring biosynthesised chemical is likely not practical for direct implementation in crop protection. Rather, focus should be placed on the development and exploitation of synthesised nature identical variants of these compounds for use as a biopesticide.  相似文献

We investigate the sensitivity of the right operator in bacteriophage lambda. In particular, the system is probed in the three different regulatory protein concentration-regimes: 1), lysogen (CI dominates); 2), during induction (CI and Cro at comparable concentrations); and 3), after induction (Cro dominates). Systematic perturbations of the protein-operator binding energies show in a lysogen that the activity (production rate) at promoter PRM is robust to variations, in contrast to PR, where the sensitivity is high. Both promoters, however, show large sensitivity in regimes 2 and 3. In all regimes we identify several suppressors, meaning that for a given large perturbation (±2 kcal/mol) of one binding energy, there exist compensating perturbation(s) that restore the wild-type activity.  相似文献

Various physiological, biochemical and molecular biological disturbances have been put forward as mediators of neuronal cell injury in acute and chronic pathological states of the brain such as ischemia, epileptic seizures and Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. These include over-activation of glutamate receptors, a rise in cytoplasmic calcium activity and mitochondrial dysfunction. The possible involvement of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dysfunction in this process has been largely neglected until recently, although the ER plays a central role in important cell functions. Not only is the ER involved in the control of cellular calcium homeostasis, it is also the subcellular compartment in which the folding and processing of membrane and secretory proteins takes place. The fact that blocking of these processes is sufficient to cause cell damage indicates that they are crucial for normal cell functioning. This review presents evidence that ER function is disturbed in many acute and chronic diseases of the brain. The complex processes taken place in this subcellular compartment are however, affected in different ways in various disorders; whereas the ER-associated degradation of misfolded proteins is affected in Parkinson's disease, it is the unfolded protein response which is down-regulated in Alzheimer's disease and the ER calcium homeostasis that is disturbed in ischemia. Studying the consequences of the observed deteriorations of ER function and identifying the mechanisms causing ER dysfunction in these pathological states of the brain will help to elucidate whether neurodegeneration is indeed caused by these disturbances, and will help to facilitate the search for drugs capable of blocking the pathological process directly at an early stage.  相似文献

Warming of the Arctic has resulted in earlier snowmelt and green‐up of plants in spring, potentially disrupting the synchrony between plant phenology and breeding phenology in herbivores. A negative relationship between offspring survival in West Greenland caribou and the timing of vegetation emergence was the first finding of such a mismatch in Arctic mammals. However, other studies indicate that the energy for foetal growth and early lactation is predominantly drawn from stored energy reserves typical of ‘capital’ breeders, suggesting that conditions well before spring influence calf production more than the timing of spring onset. Here we use 20 years of observations of marked Svalbard reindeer to evaluate determinants of annual recruitment, as measured by the presence of a calf at foot in mid‐summer. Spring temperatures and the enhanced vegetation index were used as proxies for spring onset, while data on body mass and pregnancy rates in late winter allowed us to determine maternal condition and the reproductive status before spring. Pregnancy rate, offspring survival and annual recruitment were all strongly correlated with average late winter adult female body mass (r = 0.87; r = 0.83; r = 0.92, respectively). Contrary to the findings in West Greenland, neither early calf survival nor annual recruitment were correlated with the two measures of annual variation in spring phenology (r = – 0.07, p = 0.8 and r = – 0.15, p = 0.6, respectively). We also revisit the Greenland data and reveal that the pattern of covariance between early and late measures of fecundity, as well as between early measures of fecundity and offspring survival, correspond with the results from Svalbard. Our results emphasize that conditions affecting maternal body mass during winter explain close to all the variation in recruitment, questioning the importance of the role of a mismatch between plant phenology and calving date.  相似文献

Homogenate of tissue from juveniles of Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus suffering from viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) was used to challenge smolt of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with an initial average weight of 110 g. The nodavirus was administered in the form of an intraperitoneal injection, and the fish were kept for 134 d post challenge. Genotype characterisation of the nodavirus was performed by sequencing the RNA1 and RNA2 segments, and a quantitative real-time PCR (Q-PCR) assay was developed. Tissues from different organs were stained by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Samples were collected at random on Days 7, 25, 45, 69, 125 and 134 after challenge. Mortality, clinical signs and pathology of VER were observed only in the challenged group. The Q-PCR detected positive fish only in the challenged group, all of which were positive on all days of sampling. An increase in relative virus concentrations was observed from Day 7 to Day 25 post challenge. The increased level of virus concentration was maintained in the medulla oblongata throughout the experiment, suggesting persistence or slow elimination of the virus over time. The IHC detected positive cells on Days 34, 70 and 74. These results suggest that the nodavirus is transported to the medulla oblongata from the intraperitoneal injection site and is able to replicate in salmon. When injected, this nodavirus isolate caused mortality and established a persistent infection in the challenged salmon throughout the experiment. This susceptibility suggests that co-location of salmon and marine species should be avoided until further studies of possible transmission have been carried out.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in poultry products, and to elucidate whether poultry products may be linked to listeriosis cases. A further goal was to identify contamination routes for L. monocytogenes to broiler carcasses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Poultry products (385 samples) were screened for L. monocytogenes. The recovered isolates and 19 patient isolates were characterized by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and restriction enzyme analysis. The poultry isolates showed great genetic diversity, but no identical subclones were identified from poultry sources and patients. One slaughterhouse was examined in detail during a 16-month period. The contamination rates increased along the processing line, and one subclone was found during the whole period. Only low prevalence of the bacteria was revealed from broiler faeces. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of L. monocytogenes in poultry products was high, but no listeriosis cases was linked to poultry products. Broilers seem to be contaminated during the slaughter process, and specific strains may persist in the processing environment. Broiler faeces does not seem to be an important source of L. monocytogenes in poultry products. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Preventive measures to avoid contamination of poultry products by L. monocytogenes must be taken in the processing plants.  相似文献

Many small globular proteins are traditionally classified as thermodynamical two-state systems, i.e., the protein is either in the native, active state (folded) or in the denatured state (unfolded). We challenge this view and show that there may exist (protein) systems for which a van't Hoff analysis of experimental data cannot determine whether the system corresponds to two or three thermodynamical states when only temperatures in a narrow temperature region around the transition are considered. We generalize a widely employed two-state protein folding model to include a third, transition state. For this three-state system we systematically study the deviation of the calorimetric enthalpy (heat of transition) from the van't Hoff enthalpy, a measure of the two-stateness of a transition. We show that under certain conditions the heat capacity of the three-state system can be almost indistinguishable from the heat capacity for the two-state system over a broad temperature interval. The consequence may be that some three-state (or even more than three-states) systems have been misinterpreted as two-state systems when the conclusion is drawn solely upon the van't Hoff enthalpy. These findings are important not only for proteins, but also for the interpretation of thermodynamical systems in general.  相似文献

To evaluate the role of seafoods in the epidemiology of human listeriosis and the role of the processing environment as a source of Listeria monocytogenes in seafood products, 305 L. monocytogenes isolates were characterized by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis using 21 genetic loci and restriction enzyme analysis of total DNA. Forty-four isolates were recovered from patients in Norway; 93 were isolated from seafoods, seafood-processing environments, and seawater from 55 different producers; and the remaining 168 isolates originated from six seafood-processing plants and one transport terminal examined in detail for L. monocytogenes. The patient isolates fell into 11 electrophoretic types, with four of them being responsible for 77% of the listeriosis cases in 1992 to 1996. Isolates from Norwegian seafoods and processing environments showed great genetic diversity, indicating that seafoods and seafood-processing environments do not offer a niche for specific L. monocytogenes strains. On the other hand, isolates from individual processing plants were genetically more homogenous, showing that plants are likely to be colonized with specific subclones of L. monocytogenes. The isolation of identical subclones of L. monocytogenes from both human patients and seafoods, including ready-to-eat products, suggests that such products may have been possible sources for listeriosis cases in Norway.  相似文献
