The blood‐feeding juvenile stages of gnathiid isopods are important ectoparasites of marine fishes on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and are a major component of the diet of cleaner fishes. We report here that these gnathiids have undergone evolutionary diversification, both geographically and temporally (into diurnally and nocturnally active taxa), which has been accompanied by changes in their morphology and behaviour. To perform this analysis, we sequenced a portion of the nuclear ribosomal ITS2 for 47 gnathiids collected from 29 host fishes of 11 species at three locales spanning 2000 km on the GBR. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses both revealed four major clades. There was some degree of geographical structuring in these clades, but there was no evidence supporting host fish specialization, as gnathiids collected from the skin of different teleost taxa did not resolve into distinct clades. The topology of the phylogeny also implied some structuring that was dependent upon collection time (day or night), so we investigated whether there were also behavioural and morphological differences between taxa active at these different times. Nocturnal gnathiids had significantly longer antennules and larger eyes than diurnal gnathiids – two traits presumably adaptive for nocturnal activity. Behavioural tests showed that both nocturnal and diurnal gnathiids use olfaction and vision while foraging, but that nocturnal gnathiids used olfaction more often in dark conditions, and that they were able to perceive movement under extremely low levels of light. Diurnal gnathiids used vision more effectively when there was some ambient light. Our results thus suggest that both phenotypic and genotypic divergence in gnathiids may be influenced by natural selection acting on ecological traits, such as predator avoidance and host detection. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 94 , 569–587.  相似文献

The bioactive form of jasmonate is the conjugate of the amino acid isoleucine (Ile) with jasmonic acid (JA), which is biosynthesized in a reaction catalysed by the GH3 enzyme JASMONATE RESISTANT 1 (JAR1). We examined the biochemical properties of OsJAR1 and its involvement in photomorphogenesis of rice (Oryza sativa). OsJAR1 has a similar substrate specificities as its orthologue in Arabidopsis. However, osjar1 loss‐of‐function mutants did not show as severe coleoptile phenotypes as the JA‐deficient mutants coleoptile photomorphogenesis 2 (cpm2) and hebiba, which develop long coleoptiles in all light qualities we examined. Analysis of hormonal contents in the young seedling stage revealed that osjar1 mutants are still able to synthesize JA‐Ile conjugate in response to blue light, suggesting that a redundantly active enzyme can conjugate JA and Ile in rice seedlings. A good candidate for this enzyme is OsJAR2, which was found to be able to catalyse the conjugation of JA with Ile as well as with some additional amino acids. In contrast, if plants in the vegetative stage were mechanically wounded, the content of JA‐Ile was severely reduced in osjar1, demonstrating that OsJAR1 is the most important JA‐Ile conjugating enzyme in the wounding response during the vegetative stage.  相似文献

The first fossil representative of the Protopaussinae and the second fossil Eohomopterus (Paussinae) are described from amber inclusions of Tertiary age collected in the Dominican Republic on the West Indian island of Hispaniola ( Protopaussus pristinus sp.n., Eohomopterus poinari sp.n.). These finds increase the total number of paussids present in Dominican amber to four species in three genera ( Protopaussus , Eohomopterus , Homopterus ). A key is provided for the identification of the New World genera of Protopaussinae and Paussinae and for the species of Eohomopterus . Based on synapomorphic character states, the paussid beetles are split into two subfamilies, the monobasic Protopaussinae and the more inclusive Paussinae (the twenty-three genera are placed into two supertribes: the Carabidomemnitae comprising two tribes and the Paussitae comprising eight tribes. The extant congeners of Eohomopterus and Homopterus live in the Neotropical Region, while the extant members of Protopaussus are known only from the Oriental Region. This record of New World Tertiary Protopaussus adds another example of the Old World relationships of taxa from Dominican amber. The temporal and geographical distribution of Protopaussus indicates that its present zoogeographical range may represent the relict of a wide Laurasian distribution in the past. It does not support the previously suspected Oriental centre of origin for the ancestral stock of {Protopaussinae + Paussinae}.  相似文献

We report the first discovery since the 1970s of a new extant family (Aenigmatineidae fam.n. ) of homoneurous moths, based on the small Aenigmatinea glatzella sp.n . from Kangaroo Island off southern Australia. It exhibits a combination of extraordinary anatomical characters, and, unlike most homoneurous moths, its larva is a conifer‐feeder (stem mining in Callitris, Cupressaceae). While the adult's mouthparts are strongly regressed, evidence from other morphological characters and from a Bayesian analysis of 25 genetic loci convincingly places the taxon among Glossata (‘tongue moths’). An unexpected tongue moth clade including Acanthopteroctetidae and Neopseustidae, suggested with low support in recent molecular analyses, remarkably becomes strongly supported when Aenigmatinea is included in the molecular analysis; the new taxon becomes subordinated in that clade (as sister group to Neopseustidae) and the clade itself appears as the sister group of all Heteroneura, representing the vast majority of all Lepidoptera. Including Aenigmatinea into the analysis thereby strengthens the surprising indication of non‐monophyly of Myoglossata, and the new phylogeny requires an additional number of ad hoc assumptions of convergence/character reversals in early Lepidoptera evolution. The Early Palaeozoic phytoplankton (acritarch) radiation paralleled a long-term increase in sea level between the Early Cambrian and the Late Ordovician. In the Late Cambrian, after the SPICE δ13Ccarb excursion, acritarchs underwent a major change in morphological disparity and their taxonomical diversity increased to reach highest values during the Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian). This highest phytoplankton diversity of the Palaeozoic was possibly the result of palaeogeography (greatest continental dispersal) and major orogenic and volcanic activity, which provided maximum ecospace and large amounts of nutrients. With its warm climate and high atmospheric CO2 levels, the Ordovician was similar to the Cretaceous: a period when phytoplankton diversity was at its maximum during the Mesozoic. With increased phytoplankton availability in the Late Cambrian and Ordovician a radiation of zooplanktonic organisms took place at the same time as a major diversification of suspension feeders. In addition, planktotrophy originated in invertebrate larvae during the Late Cambrian–Early Ordovician. These important changes in the trophic chain can be considered as a major palaeoecological revolution (part of the rise of the Palaeozoic Evolutionary Fauna of Sepkoski). There is now sufficient evidence that this trophic chain revolution was related to the diversification of the phytoplankton, of which the organic-walled fraction is partly preserved.  相似文献

Internists as well as surgeons agree that subtotal gastric resection is a satisfactory method of treatment for a selected group of patients with intractable or complicated peptic ulcer.A short historical review of the development of the operation is given. The importance of removing a large portion of the acid pepsin-secreting area of the stomach is stressed. A variation from the usual method of resection accomplishes this and at the same time leaves a satisfactory gastric pouch and lessens the incidence of the dumping syndrome.  相似文献

Burnet moths of the genus Zygaena are a striking group of primarily diurnal Lepidoptera displaying an exceptional phenotypic plasticity. Previous attempts to elucidate the phylogenetic history of the group had been confounded by a perplexing pattern of characters or insufficient taxon sampling. In the present study, we infer a phylogeny of the genus Zygaena by analysing 5.4 kb of their nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Eighty‐four of the 98 currently recognized species in this genus are considered, including representatives of all described species groups. RNA coding sequences are aligned with reference to zygaenoid moth specific secondary structure models of corresponding molecules. We conduct phylogenetic analyses within a Bayesian framework applying partition specific substitution parameters; covariation of paired sites in RNA gene sequences is accommodated by using doublet substitution models. The molecular data reveal that a considerable number of currently recognized species groups in Zygaena are not monophyletic. The traditional subgeneric classification proves to be artificial as well; Agrumenia and Zygaena (sensu stricto) are polyphyletic. Only the subgenus Mesembrynus can be confirmed as a monophyletic species cluster. Optimization of larval host–plant associations and forewing patterns on sampled trees of the Bayesian analyses suggest convergent evolution of similar wing pattern types in distantly related species clusters and a shift from cyanogenic to acyanogenic host‐plants. The phylogenetic results challenge the classic assumption that early species diversification in Zygaena took place in the Irano–Turkestanian region. Rather, the molecular data point to the western Mediterranean area as the geographical origin of the group and imply a subsequent colonization of the Middle East and Central Asia. We discuss the apparently convergent evolution of similar wing patterns in context with the chemical defence system of burnet moths and suggest a species group concept for the genus Zygaena that accounts for the recent findings. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 501–520.  相似文献

1. Insects commonly resist parasites using melanotic encapsulation. Many studies measuring immune response use the amount of melanin deposited on an artificial object that has been inserted into the animal as a proxy of the amount of resistance that the host is capable of mounting to natural parasites. 2. The relevance of this methodology to immune response in natural insect populations needs further study. Here, we examined two temperate damselfly species to elucidate the relationships among damselfly size, natural resistance to mites, and the immune response mounted by the same damselflies against nylon filaments. 3. The damselfly species that had high rates of melanotic encapsulation of mites in nature deposited more melanin on the nylon inserts than the species with low rates of natural resistance. 4. In females of this species, those that had resisted mites naturally melanised the nylon filament more aggressively than those that did not resist mites. 5. Our results show some support for the use of nylon filaments to assess natural patterns of immune response in these damselflies, but also suggest that caution should be used in interpreting the responses.  相似文献
