Pleiotropic effect of the Black crystal mutation on reproductive indicators in the American mink (Mustela vison)]

The parameters of reproduction were studied in American minks that were homo- and heterozygous for the Black crystal mutation (Cr). The given mutation that changes the hair pigmentation was obtained de novo duration selection of American minks for tame behavior. Apart from changed color, the following reproduction disorders were detected in the Black crystal mutants, as compared to standard animals: (1) delayed entry into the reproductive season in females; (2) greater percentage in both homo- and heterozygous animals of females bearing no offspring; (3) greater early postnatal lethality indices. The most marked suppressing effect on the development of offspring was detected in homozygous females (Cr/Cr), whose progeny perished within a few days after birth. An analysis of reproduction in mutants and standard animals is presented. An attempt was made to explain the conceivable mechanisms that form the basis of disorders detected.     

Structural-mechanical properties and swelling of the protein complexes of hyaluronate and protein-chondroitin-4-sulfate]

It was shown that the mechano-structural strength and swelling of gels consisting of gelatine and potassium hyaluronate (PH) or potassium protein-chondroitin-4-sulphate (PPCS) depended on the correlation of the components. Low PH and PPCS concentrations showed a minimal mechano-structural strength and a maximal swelling of gels. In the zones of neutralization of the positive electrical charges of gelatine by macropolyanions a high mechano-structural strength coincided with a minimal swelling. With high PH concentrations the mechano-structural strength and swelling of gels became equal to those of pure gelatine; and with high PPCS concentrations there was noted an additional parallel increase in the strength and swelling of gels.     

Electron microscopic study of isolated proteoglycans]

Chemically isolated separate preparations of the non-aggregating protein-chondroitin-keratin sulphate (PCKS) fraction from the hyaline cartilage and hyaluronic acid (HUA) of the vitreous body and of the umbilicus were investigated by electron microscopy. PCKS and HUA in films without cytochrome c were present in the form of granules and differed by structural organization. The proteoglycans of the cytochrome c films were seen as finely-filamentous-cellular network, and were distinctly differentiated by their macromolecular organization. A mixture of both proteoglycans formed complexes as a result of a noncovalent interaction. Uranyl acetate ensured a good contrasting of proteoglycans, especially of PCKS, without cytochrome c.     

Spatiotemporal patterns of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (Mif) expression in the mouse placenta

Background  

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has special pro-inflammatory roles, affecting the functions of macrophages and lymphocytes and counter-regulating the effects of glucocorticoids on the immune response. The conspicuous expression of MIF during human implantation and early embryonic development also suggests this factor acts in reproductive functions. The overall goal of this study was to evaluate Mif expression by trophoblast and embryo placental cells during mouse pregnancy.
