Two simple methods were followed to determine detection thresholds for the taste of substances in aqueous solution. The methods applied were: a modification of the ascending method of limits and a method based on the use of scales. Detection thresholds were calculated for the four basic tastes (sweet, salty, acid, and bitterness), umami and metallic. Reference substances for each taste were sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, caffeine, monosodium glutamate and iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate and the results of the two methods were compared. We found that the threshold values calculated by method ASTM-679 was within the range of concentrations identified with the scales method. 相似文献

Messenger ribonucleoproteins, first discovered in 1964 in our laboratory as free mRNA-containing particles of fish embryo cytoplasm and designated as informosomes, proved to have a universal occurrence in eukaryotic cells. Messenger ribonucleoproteins of different intracellular localization such as free cytoplasmic non-translatable informosomes, translatable messenger ribonucleoproteins in polyribosomes and nuclear pre-mRNA-containing particles are characterized by a number of features common for all of them. However, the transport from the nucleus into the cytoplasm as well as the transition from the free non-translatable state into the polyribosome-bound translatable state are accompanied by essential changes in the protein moiety of the particles. The existance of free RNA-binding proteins in eukaryotic cells has also been shown. These proteins seem to represent a pool for the formation of messenger ribonucleoproteins (informosomes).It has recently been demonstrated that the eukaryotic translation factors and, in particular, both the elongation factors and some initiation factors are among the cytoplasmic RNA-binding proteis. It is suggested that the mRNA in eukaryotic cells at different stages of its life time carries on itself the proteins which are required for its own biogenesis, processing and transport (nuclear informosomes), for its existence in a temporarily inactive state (free cytoplasmic informosomes) and for its functioning as a template (polyribosomal informosomes):omnia mea mecum porto. 相似文献

A two-chamber mathematical model of 137Cs uptake and removal from the body of cattle chronically consuming contaminated fodder has been developed; the model takes into account age dependence of radionuclide absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract. The model parameters were taken from the experiment on calves with chronic peroral uptake of contaminated fodder. In accordance with the model and experiment, 137Cs transfer factor to the muscular tissue one month after birth reaches a maximum value of 56% of the daily uptake per 1 kg of the tissue. By the model, the equilibrium processes of uptake and removal set in two years after the calves birth. The equilibrium TF for muscles in adults approximates 2.8% of the daily uptake per 1 kg tissue. Because of 137Cs absorption from the gastrointestinal tract changes with age, doses of internal exposure of calves over the first two years will be about 5 times higher than doses for any one of the two subsequent years. 相似文献

Background
There are several differences associated with the behaviour of the four main experimental Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains, FA1090, FA19, MS11, and F62. Although there is data concerning the gene complements of these strains, the reasons for the behavioural differences are currently unknown. Phase variation is a mechanism that occurs commonly within the Neisseria spp. and leads to switching of genes ON and OFF. Background
Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus; GBS) is a major contributor to obstetric and neonatal bacterial sepsis. Serotype III strains cause the majority of late-onset sepsis and meningitis in babies, and thus appear to have an enhanced invasive capacity compared with the other serotypes that cause disease predominantly in immunocompromised pregnant women. We compared the serotype III and V whole genome sequences, strains NEM316 and 2603VR respectively, in an attempt to identify genetic attributes of strain NEM316 that might explain the propensity of strain NEM316 to cause late-onset disease in babies. Fourteen putative pathogenicity islands were described in the strain NEM316 whole genome sequence. Using PCR- and targeted microarray- strategies, the presence of these islands were assessed in a diverse strain collection including 18 colonizing isolates from healthy pregnant women, and 13 and 8 invasive isolates from infants with early- and late-onset sepsis, respectively. 相似文献119.
Recently we have reported about a novel stress response protein (pY or RaiA) associated with Escherichia coli ribosomes that inhibits translation at the aminoacyl-tRNA binding stage. Here we show that leucine misincorporation during in vitro poly(U) translation is inhibited by this protein much stronger than the incorporation of phenylalanine. The miscoding counteraction by RaiA is especially strong at the concentrations of magnesium ions close to those observed in vivo and diminishes at higher magnesium concentrations. The results obtained suggest that the anti-miscoding activity of RaiA could be the main function of the protein, rather than the inhibition of translation. The role of the protein in adaptation of cells to environmental stress is discussed. 相似文献
