1. Plant defensive chemistry is predicted to have a more negative effect on generalist herbivores and their parasitoids than on specialist herbivores and their parasitoids. 2. This prediction was examined by comparing the effects of the wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) toxin, xanthotoxin, on a generalist herbivore–parasitoid association [the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni Hübner, and its polyembryonic parasitoid, Copidosoma floridanum (Ashmead)] and a specialist herbivore–parasitoid association [the parsnip webworm, Depressaria pastinacella (Duponchel), and its polyembryonic parasitoid, Copidosoma sosares (Walker)]. 3. Copidosoma floridanum brood sizes were smaller and experienced lower survivorship when reared in a host feeding on an artificial diet containing a low concentration of xanthotoxin. No T. ni hosts, parasitised or unparasitised, survived on a diet high in xanthotoxin. In contrast, C. sosares brood size and survivorship were unaffected by the presence of low levels of xanthotoxin in the host diet. Copidosoma sosares experienced reduced brood size and survivorship only when its host consumed a diet containing 15 times the level of xanthotoxin as the diet adversely affecting its congener. 4. The differences in response to xanthotoxin exhibited by C. floridanum and C. sosares are explained partly by a differential reduction in host quality and partly by differential exposure to xanthotoxin in host haemolymph. Unlike D. pastinacella, T. ni experienced reduced pupal weight and survivorship and prolonged developmental time on a low‐xanthotoxin diet. More xanthotoxin passed unmetabolised into the haemolymph of T. ni than into the haemolymph of D. pastinacella.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS Examination of stained specimens (protargol and nigrosinbutanol) of hypotrich ciliates during division allows understanding of morphogenesis of buccal structures and cirri. Midventral, frontal, and transverse cirri in both proter and opisthe of Urostyla marina differentiate from a longitudinal series of numerous oblique ciliary streaks in a manner similar to that of Bakuella, Holosticha, Keronopsii. Pseudourostyla, and Uroleptus. This pattern differs markedly from that in Amphisiella, Kahliella, Paraholosticha, and Paraurostyla, in which the fronto-ventral and transverse cirri arise from a series of fewer (2–5) ciliary streaks in a longitudinal or fan-like array. Rows of marginal cirri in U. marina arise independently, as in Urostyla grandis. On the basis of comparisons of both structural and morphogenetic features of this and other hypotrichs, the family Urostylidae is redefined to contain Urostyla (type), Bakuella, Holosticha, Keronopsis, Pseudourostyla, and Uroleptus. Other genera formerly contained in the families Holostichidae and Urostylidae are placed in synonymy, assigned to other families, or held in uncertain familial relationship pending their rediscovery and further investigation.  相似文献

Abstract: Estimates of population trend for the interior subspecies of band-tailed pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata fasciata) are not available because no standardized survey method exists for monitoring the interior subspecies. We evaluated 2 potential band-tailed pigeon survey methods (auditory and call-broadcast surveys) from 2002 to 2004 in 5 mountain ranges in southern Arizona, USA, and in mixed-conifer forest throughout the state. Both auditory and call-broadcast surveys produced low numbers of cooing pigeons detected per survey route (x̄ ≤ 0.67) and had relatively high temporal variance in average number of cooing pigeons detected during replicate surveys (CV ≥ 161%). However, compared to auditory surveys, use of call-broadcast increased 1) the percentage of replicate surveys on which ≥1 cooing pigeon was detected by an average of 16%, and 2) the number of cooing pigeons detected per survey route by an average of 29%, with this difference being greatest during the first 45 minutes of the morning survey period. Moreover, probability of detecting a cooing pigeon was 27% greater during call-broadcast (0.80) versus auditory (0.63) surveys. We found that cooing pigeons were most common in mixed-conifer forest in southern Arizona and density of male pigeons in mixed-conifer forest throughout the state averaged 0.004 (SE = 0.001) pigeons/ha. Our results are the first to show that call-broadcast increases the probability of detecting band-tailed pigeons (or any species of Columbidae) during surveys. Call-broadcast surveys may provide a useful method for monitoring populations of the interior subspecies of band-tailed pigeon in areas where other survey methods are inappropriate.  相似文献

1. Reliable lotic ecological monitoring requires knowledge of river typology, environmental factors, the effect of stressors known here as ‘pressures’ and appropriate indicators of anthropogenically induced change. We sampled benthic macroinvertebrate, fish, bird and macrophyte communities along an intermittent Mediterranean river and analysed community structure (relative abundance) and function (metrics) relative to environmental and pressure gradients in order to identify suitable indicator group(s) for future monitoring and mitigation programmes. 2. Principal components analysis revealed that scale‐dependent longitudinal differences in valley form separated narrower higher lying sites and tributaries with good quality habitats from more open degraded sites lower down the river continuum on a small floodplain and large scale pressures describing changes in land use related to agriculture with associated physical bankside and channel impacts. 3. Forward selection of variables in redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that reach scale environmental variables were selected more frequently than pressure variables for each organism group. Altitude and pH were highly redundant within and between groups, indicating essentially longitudinal structural and functional distribution patterns. Redundancy was far lower between selected pressure variables, but single or no pressure variables were retained for some organism groups indicating poor association of functional data, in particular, with the identified pressures. All RDA results indicated a longitudinal pH gradient, highlighting the combined effect of multiple environmental and pressure based mechanisms on organism groups. 4. Large, mobile organisms such as fish and birds provided a reliable link between organism structure and function, environmental factors and physical disturbance of the channel, bankside and wider river corridor. Benthic macroinvertebrate and macrophyte structural data revealed distribution patterns in relation to water velocity, a key parameter for developing appropriate compensation measures. 5. Results clearly show the importance of assessing patterns of both functional and structural change across multiple organism groups in order to identify typologically appropriate links with complex environmental and pressure gradients and develop and implement appropriate monitoring systems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. During Drosophila courtship 'pulse song', muscle potentials occur at two points during the cycle of neuromuscular events which result in a sound pulse being produced. The dorsal longitudinal, second and third dorsal ventral and axillary muscles show potentials 18 ms before each sound pulse while the first dorsal ventral, basalar and sternobasalar muscles fire 3 ms after the onset of each pulse. The timing of these events remains unaltered in animals with the antennae removed, indicating that acoustic feedback is not an important factor. Courting vestigial flies, in the absence of detectable wing base movements, produce indirect muscle potentials at the appropriate song inter-pulse intervals. Thus proprioceptive feedback is also unimportant in determining the intervals between pulses. During putative 'sine song', 'pulse song' and flight in vestigial flies, however, the timing of basalar muscle potentials is abnormal. Also, if the wing is driven externally at a frequency different from that of normal flight, basalar and, to a lesser extent, first dorsal ventral muscles, are phase locked to the driving frequency. These two results suggest that the timing of those muscles which fire at the beginning of the sound pulses is set by proprioceptive feedback. A model of song production is proposed which takes into account the data from this and from previously published papers.  相似文献
