This Address examines the current concerns of ecologists. There is instability in the organization of science at a political level, in funding bodies, and in organizations such as CSIRO and tertiary education institutions. There is less funding for research and development in Australia than in other developed countries, mainly because of poor funding from the private sector, and funds available to the new Australian Research Council are small in relation to applications for support. These factors affect career opportunities for ecologists, although students continue to be attracted to the area. The state of the Australian environment leaves much to be desired, with widespread land degradation (including erosion and salination), deterioration in water quality, and disease in natural ecosystems; many species are endangered, and there is concern about forest management. Widespread environmental problems occur despite the fact that, for more than a century, those concerned with land management have been educated in tertiary institutions. More might be done to equip graduates better for solving Australian problems, for informing the public about methods which can be used to correct environmental degradation, and for disseminating research results more directly to managers. While all scientists should emphasize the importance of basic research, it is argued that more recognition should be given to the application of science to management. Among positive aspect of the present climate are a government commitment to increase numbers in senior school years and in tertiary institutions; entry of graduates into consulting work; use of conservation strategies to enhance interaction between ecology and industry as illustrated by mining, agriculture and forestry; increased activity by organizations which raise funds from the private sector; definition of research priorities; and the identification which Australians have with an image of the countryside. With this framework of closer links between ecology, practical problem-solving, and support from industry and the private sector, it is argued that significant progress will be made in the years ahead.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Twenty-six species of bacteria and seven species of yeasts were aseptically presented separately as potential food sources to the estuarine heterotrich ciliate, Fabrea salina, under standardized conditions of cell number, medium, and temperature. The bacteria and yeasts were classified according to their effect on the intrinsic growth rate of the ciliate: Nutritious bacteria: Photobacterium fisherii, Vibrio neresis, V. natriegens, Flavobacterium sp. strain ASN16, V. harveyi, Xanthomonas sp. strain ASN22; Maintainer bacteria: V. vulnificus, Vibrio sp. strain V344, V. alginolyticus, V. anguillarum, Bacillus sp. strain ST332B2, Vibrio sp. strain V415, Acinetobacter sp. strain BHT8, Flectobacillus marinus, and Enterobacter aerogenes; Maintainer yeasts: Candida albicans and Cryptococcus marcerans strain 2; Nonnutriuous bacteria: V. parahaemolyticus, Planococcus sp. strain ASN13, P. mandapapanensis, Hyphomicrobium vulgari, Pseudomonas sp. strain CNS1, an unidentified gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, motile bacillus strain IG9A2, Thiobacillus thioparus, Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium sp. strain BR 17, Achromobacter sp. strain 23030, and Oceanospirillum beijerinckii; Nonnutriuous yeasts: C. marcerans strain 1, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Debaryomyces hansenii, an unidentified black yeast, and C. laurentii. Doridicola connexus sp.n. (Poeclostomatoida, Lichomolgidae) and Collocherides singularis sp.n. (Siphonostomatoida, Asterocheridae) are described from specimens found on the ophiuroid Astroboa nuda in the Moluccas. D. connexus may be recognized by the small discoidal free segment of leg 5 in the female. C. singularis is characterized by having only one seta on the second segment of the endopod of legs 1–3 and by the rounded inner lobe on the proximal segment of leg 5.  相似文献

A competition experiment conducted over a period of 50 weeks resulted in stable coexistence of Drosophila hydei and D. melanogaster. In a repeat of this experiment the results for the first 25 weeks were similar to the results of the earlier experiment, but after this time the state of coexistence collapsed and a fairly rapid trend towards competitive exclusion was observed. Extinctions of D. melanogaster occurred in 11 of the 12 experimental cages before termination of the experiment at 50 weeks. At about the same time as the competitive ability of D. hydei increased, an alteration in the range of pupation sites utilized by this species was noted. The change in pupation site was demonstrated to be at least partially heritable, and it appears to be responsible for D. hydei's increased competitive ability. This experiment provides an example of natural selection within a competing population acting against the stability of the overall two-species system.  相似文献

The fractal doubly stochastic Poisson process (FDSPP) model of molecular evolution, like other doubly stochastic Poisson models, agrees with the high estimates for the index of dispersion found from sequence comparisons. Unlike certain previous models, the FDSPP also predicts a positive geometric correlation between the index of dispersion and the mean number of substitutions. Such a relationship is statistically proven herein using comparisons between 49 mammalian genes. There is no characteristic rate associated with molecular evolution according to this model, but there is a scaling relationship in rates according to a fractal dimension of evolution. The FDSPP is a suitable replacement for the homogeneous Poisson process in tests of the lineage dependence of rates and in estimating confidence intervals for divergence times. As opposed to other fractal models, this model can be interpreted in terms of Darwinian selection and drift.   相似文献

Abstract Two chronosequences of unsaturated, buried loess sediments, ranging in age from <10,000 years to >1 million years, were investigated to reconstruct patterns of microbial ecological succession that have occurred since sediment burial. The relative importance of microbial transport and survival to succession was inferred from sediment ages, porewater ages, patterns of abundance (measured by direct counts, counts of culturable cells, and total phospholipid fatty acids), activities (measured by radiotracer and enzyme assays), and community composition (measured by phospholipid fatty acid patterns and Biolog substrate usage). Core samples were collected at two sites 40 km apart in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State, near the towns of Washtucna and Winona. The Washtucna site was flooded multiple times during the Pleistocene by glacial outburst floods; the Winona site elevation is above flood stage. Sediments at the Washtucna site were collected from near surface to 14.9 m depth, where the sediment age was approximately 250 ka and the porewater age was 3700 years; sample intervals at the Winona site ranged from near surface to 38 m (sediment age: approximately 1 Ma; porewater age: 1200 years). Microbial abundance and activities declined with depth at both sites; however, even the deepest, oldest sediments showed evidence of viable microorganisms. Same-age sediments had equal quantities of microorganisms, but different community types. Differences in community makeup between the two sites can be attributed to differences in groundwater recharge and paleoflooding. Estimates of the microbial community age can be constrained by porewater and sediment ages. In the shallower sediments (<9 m at Washtucna, <12 m at Winona), the microbial communities are likely similar in age to the groundwater; thus, microbial succession has been influenced by recent transport of microorganisms from the surface. In the deeper sediments, the populations may be considerably older than the porewater ages, since microbial transport is severely restricted in unsaturated sediments. The influence of salinity on Typha orientalis and Juncus kraussii was documented in experiments on germination of seeds and on growth of seedlings and adult, rhizome-bearing plants. Juncus was more salt-tolerant than Typha at all three life-history stages, but salt tolerance increased with plant age for both species. Although seeds of both species germinated at 0 and 5 ppt, the germination data overestimated salt tolerance for Typha. Only the newly emerged seedlings of Juncus were capable of growth after removal from the 5 ppt NaCl solution to fresh water. Typha seedlings that initiated growth at 0 ppt grew well at 5 ppt but not at 10 ppt, while Juncus seedlings were tolerant of 10 ppt. Although the 20 ppt treatment caused high mortality of Juncus seedlings, the 10 ppt treatment mainly reduced growth. Adult plants of Typha, which were collected from the field, survived the 20 ppt treatment, while adult Juncus survived the 40 ppt treatment. The presence of salt (10–40 ppt) shortened the growing season for adult, rhizome-bearing plants of both Juncus and Typha, with a lower maximum and earlier peak in total leaf length and maximum leaf number. Thus, the greater biomass in fresh water was achieved primarily through a longer growth period, rather than a greatly accelerated growth rate. Interactions between the two species were explored in mixed-species culture of both seedlings and adult rhizome-bearing plants. Interspecific interactions were present at low salinity, but results differed for seedlings and adult plants. Typha seedlings failed to outgrow Juncus seedlings (at 5 ppt) but adult plants of Typha outgrew Juncus (at 0 ppt). Relative yields (biomass in mixed/pure pots) for Juncus and Typha seedlings were 0.85 and 0.26 at 5 ppt. Relative yields of adult plants were 0.24 for Juncus and 1.20 for Typha at 0 ppt. For both seedlings and adults, the species that ultimately dominated the mixed-species pots produced just as much total biomass as in pure-species pots, even though initial planting density was half as high. Extrapolating findings to the field situation, it appears that Typha has a narrow regeneration niche. The indication is that Typha could invade Juncus stands only following salinity reduction (allowing seed germination and early seedling growth) and after disturbance disrupts the native vegetation. The combined conditions of prolonged low salinity and open habitat occur where street drains are cut through the salt marsh. The probability of Typha becoming established would be highest in such areas. vegetative expansion would follow with continued freshwater influx, as rhizome-bearing plants gain an interspecific advantage.  相似文献

Exposure of the outside of the isolated frog skin to a Ringer's solution, made hypertonic by the addition of mannitol, causes a rapid and sustained increase in transepithelial permeability through a structural distortion-a focal blistering-of the "tight" junctions of the outermost living cell layer. [(3)H]ouabain, used as an autoradiographic marker for the Na+-pump (Na+-K+-adenosine triphosphatase), is usually unable to penetrate the frog skin from the outside solution, but when added to a hypertonic mannitol- Ringer's solution in the outside bath it readily penetrates the epithelium, presumably through the opened shunt pathway. Radioautographic analysis of [(3)H]ouabain binding sites revealed that most of ouabain enters from the outside solution binds to the sites on the cell membranes of the stratum spinosum, as was the case when it was applied from the inside bath in an earlier study. The outer living cell layer, the first to be exposed to ouabain, does not appear to be the major site for the Na+-pump, and therefore, is not likely to be responsible for most of the active pumping of Na+. This result demonstrates that previous failure to show a high density of Na+-pump sites on the cells of the outermost layer, when [(3)H]ouabain was applied from the inside solution, was not due to the inability of the marker to reach these cells at a sufficient concentration to reveal all pump sites. These results provide further support for a model of Na+-transport across the frog skin which distributes the active pump step on the inward facing membranes of all living cells.  相似文献
