Increased rates of tree senescence and mortality in and adjacent to an ephemeral lake in the Western Australian wheatbelt have been attributed to increased levels of soil salinity and inundation following agricultural clearing. Winter lake salinities approximate freshwater lake values, but during periods when the lake is dry, capillary rise of groundwater is thought to increase surface soil salinity. An undescribed species of Melaleuca and Casuarina obesa dominated the seasonally inundated regions of the lake bed. Aeolian deposits of higher elevation were dominated by Eucalyptus loxophleba, Allocasuarina huegeliana or species of Banksia. Woodland of E. oleosa var. longicornis and E. salmonophloia occurred predominantly on upland fluviatile deposits of sand and sandy clays. Measurements of soil salinity and the calculation of percentage inundation from tree elevations and observations of tree vigour and xylem pressure potential response indicated that tree deaths in Melaleuca sp. and C. obesa were due to increased levels of salinity. Deaths and low vigours in E. rudis were attributed to both increasing salinities and prolonged inundation. We believe control of ground water levels should be a major consideration in the preservation of this ephemeral lake and the water fowl populations it supports.  相似文献

Abstract Patterns of reproductive and vegetative biomass allocation were compared in male and female plants of the alpine herb Aciphylla simplicifolia. Male and female plants had similar vegetative biomass but differed in the pattern of resource allocation. Inflorescences of males and females were similar in weight at the time of flowering, but differed in biomass allocation to some structures within the inflorescences, particularly those associated with ovule production and pollinator attraction (number and size of flowers). At the time of fruit production, female inflorescences were 2.6 times heavier than at flowering with developing fruit six times heavier than flowers. In addition to the increase in biomass allocated to structures associated with the provisioning and dissemination of seed, support structures (main and side stalks) were also heavier. As a result of this additional investment of resources at the time of fruit production, the reproductive effort (RE) of female plants was much higher than that of males: 37% of above ground biomass compared with 21% for males. Differences in RE did not change with plant size; however, allocation to reproduction appeared to be a constant proportion of biomass over nearly all plant sizes sampled. These results show that sex‐specific resource allocation can be a complex of temporal and morphological patterns.  相似文献

Anoxic conditions should hamper the transport of sugar in the phloem, as this is an active process. The canopy is a carbohydrate source and the roots are carbohydrate sinks. By fumigating the shoot with N2 or flooding the rhizosphere, anoxic conditions in the source or sink, respectively, were induced. Volume flow, velocity, conducting area and stationary water of the phloem were assessed by non‐invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) flowmetry. Carbohydrates and δ13C in leaves, roots and phloem saps were determined. Following flooding, volume flow and conducting area of the phloem declined and sugar concentrations in leaves and in phloem saps slightly increased. Oligosaccharides appeared in phloem saps and after 3 d, carbon transport was reduced to 77%. Additionally, the xylem flow declined and showed finally no daily rhythm. Anoxia of the shoot resulted within minutes in a reduction of volume flow, conductive area and sucrose in the phloem sap decreased. Sugar transport dropped to below 40% by the end of the N2 treatment. However, volume flow and phloem sap sugar tended to recover during the N2 treatment. Both anoxia treatments hampered sugar transport. The flow velocity remained about constant, although phloem sap sugar concentration changed during treatments. Apparently, stored starch was remobilized under anoxia.  相似文献

Egg-Mass Size and Cell Size: Effects of Temperature on Oxygen Distribution   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1  
Two processes strongly influence the distribution of oxygenwithin egg masses and cells: the supply of oxygen by diffusionand the consumption of oxygen by embryos and mitochondria. Theseprocesses are differentially sensitive to temperature. The diffusioncoefficient of oxygen depends only weakly on temperature, havinga Q10 of approximately 1.4. In contrast, the consumption ofoxygen depends strongly on temperature, having a Q10 between1.5 and 4.0. Thus, at higher temperatures, the ratio of oxygensupply to demand decreases. I show, by extending a model ofoxygen distribution within metabolizing spheres, that maximalegg-mass sizes and cell sizes are predicted to be smaller athigher temperatures. For egg masses, definitive data are notyet available. For ectothermic cells, this prediction appearsto be supported; cells from a variety of ectothermic organisms,unicellular and multicellular, are smaller when the cells areproduced at warmer temperatures. Establishing a specific connectionbetween this pattern and oxygen distributions requires demonstrationof (1) oxygen concentration gradients within metabolizing spheresand (2) central oxygen concentrations low enough to affect function.Egg masses from a variety of taxa show steep oxygen concentrationgradients and often are severely hypoxic or anoxic in centrallocations. Severe hypoxia appears capable of retarding developmentor killing embryos. Similar kinds of data for ectothermic cellshave not yet been collected, but the literature on oxygen gradientswithin mammalian cells suggests that intracellular gradientsmay be important.  相似文献
