We compare the breeding biology of a small population of Red-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax pynhocorax with that of the Alpine Chough P. graculus coexisting in the western Italian Alps. The analysis focused on nest site choice, timing of breeding, reproductive success and parental effort (assessed by means of behavioural indices such as food provisioning rates and time budgets inside and close to the nest). The Alpine Chough nested in a greater variety of sites: natural cliffs, windows of a dam, pot-holes and abandoned buildings; the Red-billed Chough used only natural cliffs. Laying dates also differed significantly, with the Red-billed Chough breeding one month earlier than its congener. Differences in the feeding ecology of those species might be responsible for the observed temporal partitioning, thus facilitating coexistence. Breeding success and reproductive behaviour were similar, and the species differed in only one out of eight breeding parameters. It is suggested that similar strong constraints on breeding behaviour have resulted in the similarities in behaviour seen in these species.  相似文献

A new species, Yoldiella seguenzae (Bivalvia, Nucu-loida), froma deep sea community off the north east coast of Sardinia (MediterraneanSea), is described. Morphometrical and statistical comparisonwith the very similar Yoldiella philippiana (Nyst, 1845), andgeneral morphological comparison with other Mediterranean andAtlantic species support the distinc-tivness of Y. seguenzaewhich is distributed in deep waters of the Central MediterraneanSea, Alboran Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In this study we examined long-term variation in the selection of nesting cliffs for the recovering population of the Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus inhabiting the Spanish Pyrenees. We focussed on variables indicating a high probability of cliff occupancy as determined by a previously published model. Although the breeding population increased from 53 to 93 territories between 1991 and 2002, the breeding range expanded only slightly. New and old nesting cliffs had similar habitat features in relation to topography, altitude and degree of human influence, but the distance between occupied cliffs was reduced (from 11.1 to 8.9 km). Thus the probabilities of occupation predicted by the model were lower for newly colonized locales. Our study shows that territory compression may occur without serious modification of nesting habitat quality. These results may arise from the lack of strong territorial behaviour by Bearded Vultures and the availability of high-quality cliffs. The relatively low quality of sites in adjacent mountains may prevent the expansion of the breeding range, but conspecific attraction may also play a role. Our study confirms that monitoring changes in key variables important to habitat selection is useful in determining long-term trends in settlement patterns in heterogeneous environments. The results also suggest that the available nest-site selection model may accurately predict cliff occupancy by Bearded Vultures in those areas where the distance to the nearest neighbour is not a limiting factor. In particular, the model may be useful in establishing priority areas for reintroduction.  相似文献

The study of specimens of Haminoea collected on the coast ofPortugal, together with the re-evaluation of historical specimensused by Nobre (1938–40) in his main work on the Portuguesemolluscs, recognized the presence of two species, Haminoea navicula(da Costa, 1778) and H. orbignyana (Férussac, 1822),and confirmed the misidentification of H. orbignyana as H. elegans(Gray, 1825). Anatomical analysis found intraspecific variabilityin the radula of H. navicula and H. orbignyana and in the seminalduct of the latter. The systematic value of taxonomic featuresincluding the shell, external morphology, animal coloration, radula, jaws, gizzard plates, prostate gland, seminal duct, penis and egg-masses is discussed. For all European speciesbut H. orbignyana, identification is only possible when anatomicaldata are considered, and the most relevant character is themale reproductive system. SEM images of the penis and prostateof H. navicula and H. orbignyana are given for the first time.A synoptic table for the recognition of the European speciesis provided. Anopheles moucheti Evans (Diptera: Culicidae) is a major vector of malaria in forested areas of Central Africa. However, few genetic tools are available for this species. The present study represents the first attempt to characterize chromosomes in An. moucheti females collected in Cameroon. Ovarian nurse cells contained polytene chromosomes, which were suitable for standard cytogenetic applications. The presence of three polymorphic chromosomal inversions in An. moucheti was revealed. Two of these inversions were located on the 2R chromosome arm. The homology between the 2R chromosome arms of An. moucheti and Anopheles gambiae Giles was established by fluorescent in situ hybridization of six An. gambiae genic sequences. Mapping of the probes on chromosomes of An. moucheti detected substantial gene order reshuffling between the two species. The presence of polytene chromosomes and polymorphic inversions in An. moucheti provides a new basis for further population genetic, taxonomic and ecological studies of this neglected malaria vector.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Capturing animals is an essential tool of wildlife management, but the use of capture devices is being affected by public pressures on an international scale. In Europe, and particularly Spain, foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are often captured using traditional methods such as nonlocking Spanish Snares (SS) set in an ad hoc fence line known as an alar, but these traditional European methods are rarely compared to modernly described restraints such as the Wisconsin Cable Restraint (WR). We evaluated rates of efficiency, selectivity, injury, and impacts to foxes and nontarget species when using SS (as traditionally set in an alar) or WR within alars or on trails in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. During 40,372 trap-nights from summer to winter of 2007, we captured 64 foxes, and 8 of 23 potential nontarget species. Our results indicated that WR set in trails were more efficient (0.28 capture rate) for capturing red foxes than SS set in an alar (0.11 capture rate). Relative to injury, foxes captured with the WR in the alar (95.4%), and WR in trails (90.5%), and the SS (90.9%) showed no indicators of poor welfare, and injury score analysis indicated that injuries were of similar magnitude for all capture devices. Overall, the WR set in trails may have performed the best, but all 3 methods are likely sufficient for capturing foxes with minimal injury, acceptable efficiency, and acceptable impact to foxes and sympatric nontarget species. Thus, wildlife managers in Spain and elsewhere can apply our findings to optimize capture and management of foxes.  相似文献

The monophyletic family Zhangsolvidae comprises stout‐bodied brachyceran flies with a long proboscis and occurring only in the Cretaceous, originally known in shale from the Early Cretaceous Laiyang Formation (Fm.) in China (Zhangsolva Nagatomi & Yang), subsequently from limestones of the Early Cretaceous Crato Fm. of Brazil. Cratomyoides Wilkommen is synonymized with Cratomyia Mazzarolo & Amorim, both from the Crato Fm.; Cratomyiidae is synonymized with Zhangsolvidae. Two genera and three species of Zhangsolvidae are described: Buccinatormyia magnifica Arillo, Peñalver & Pérez‐de la Fuente, gen. et sp.n. and B. soplaensis Arillo, Peñalver & Pérez‐de la Fuente, sp.n. , in Albian amber from Las Peñosas Fm. in Spain; and Linguatormyia teletacta Grimaldi, gen. et sp.n. , in Upper Albian–Lower Cenomanian amber from Hukawng Valley in Myanmar. Buccinatormyia soplaensis and Linguatormyia teletacta are unique among all Brachycera, extant or extinct, by their remarkably long, flagellate antennae, about 1.6× the body length in the latter species. A phylogenetic analysis of 52 morphological characters for 35 taxa is presented, 11 taxa being Cretaceous species, which supports placement of the family within Stratiomyomorpha, although not to any particular family within the infraorder.
