The majority of authors consider Festuca jubata Lowe as an endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores. Saint-Yves proposed that F. jubata was an Azorean endemic and described a geovicarious taxon in Madeira: F. filiformis C. Sm. ex Link in Buch ssp. mandonii St.-Yves. We undertook a complete bibliographical revision of the taxonomy, nomenclature, and chorology of F. jubata s.l. , and contrasted it with morphological and anatomical studies performed on samples from the Azores and Madeira. Azorean plants usually identified as F. jubata had a character combination distinct from that of those with a Madeiran provenance. Saint-Yves' proposal of two independent taxa was correct, but he erroneously considered F. jubata as an Azorean endemic because the name F. jubata was based on Madeiran plants. Consequently, F. jubata auct. pl. from the Azores belongs to a new species. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 493–499. 相似文献

Following a revision of Thapsia (Apiaceae) in north-western Africa, the name Thapsia platycarpa is resurrected and lectotypified for a species that grows between Algeria and Morocco, and a new species Thapsia cinerea is described from the Rif region of north-eastern Morocco. Morphological features that differentiate between these and other species ( T. villosa , T. garganica , T. transtagana and T. gymnesica ) are discussed. An identification key for the plants of the area is presented. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 143 , 433–442. 相似文献

The effects of nitrogen (N) availability on cell number andcell size, and the contribution of these determinants to thefinal area of fully expanded leaves of sunflower (Helianthusannuus L.) were investigated in glasshouse experiments. Plantswere given a high (N =315 ppm) or low (N=21 ppm) N supply andwere transferred between N levels at different developmentalstages (5 to 60% of final size) of target leaves. The dynamicsof cell number in unemerged (< 0.01 m in length) leaves ofplants growing at high and low levels of N supply were alsofollowed. Maximum leaf area (LAmax) was strongly (up to two-fold)and significantly modified by N availability and the timingof transfer between N supplies, through effects on leaf expansionrate. Rate of cell production was significantly (P<0.05)reduced in unemerged target leaves under N stress, but therewas no evidence of a change in primordium size or in the durationof the leaf differentiationemergence phase. In fullyexpanded leaves, number of cells per leaf (Ncell), leaf areaper cell (LAcell) and cell area (Acell) were significantly reducedby N stress. WhileLAcell and Acellresponded to changeover treatmentsirrespective of leaf size, significant (P<0.05) changes inNcellonly occurred when the changeover occurred before the leafreached approx. 10% of LAmax. There were no differential effectsof N on numbers of epidermal vs. mesophyll cells. The resultsshow that the effects of N on leaf size are largely due to effectson cell production in the unemerged leaf and on both cell productionand expansion during the first phase of expansion of the emergedleaf. During the rest of the expansion period N mainly affectsthe expansion of existing cells. Cell area plasticity permitteda response to changes in N supply even at advanced stages ofleaf expansion. Increased cell expansion can compensate forlow Ncellif N stress is relieved early in the expansion of emergedleaves, but in later phases Ncellsets a limit to this response.Copyright 1999 Annals of Botany Company Helianthus annuus, leaf expansion, leaf cell number, leaf cell size, nitrogen, leaf growth, sunflower. 相似文献

The identification of organisms is a time-consuming task even for highly specialized researchers. Many ways to accelerate the identification process have been devised – from pictorial keys to automatic, machine identification – with different degrees of success. This paper explores landmark configurations as an aid to taxonomic identification. The basic hypothesis rests on the analogy between human fingerprints and organism landmark configuration. Translated into biological terms, it asks whether individual landmark configurations can be used as diagnostic characteristics for species identification. Water mites of the genus Torrenticola were used as test organisms. The results show that identification can be made simpler through the use of landmark configurations. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 267–274. 相似文献

Abstract: Results of a cladistic analysis of the suborder Conulariina Miller and Gurley, 1896, a major extinct (Vendian–Triassic) group of scyphozoan cnidarians, are presented. The analysis sought to test whether the three conulariid subfamilies (Conulariinae Walcott, 1886 , Paraconulariinae Sinclair, 1952 and Ctenoconulariinae Sinclair, 1952 ) recognized in the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology (TIP) are monophyletic. A total of 17 morphological characters were scored for 16 ingroup taxa, namely the genera Archaeoconularia, Baccaconularia, Climacoconus, Conularia, Conulariella, Conularina, Ctenoconularia, Eoconularia, Glyptoconularia, Metaconularia, Notoconularia, Paraconularia, Pseudoconularia, Reticulaconularia, Teresconularia and Vendoconularia. The extant medusozoan taxa Cubozoa, Stauromedusae, Coronatae and Semaeostomeae served as outgroups. Unweighted analysisof the data matrix yielded 1057 trees, and successive weighting analysis resulted in one of the 1057 original trees. The ingroup is monophyletic with two autapomorphies: (1) the quadrate geometry of the oral region; and (2) the presence of a mineralized (phosphatic) periderm. Within the ingroup, the clade (Vendoconularia, Teresconularia, Conularina, Eoconularia) is supported by the sinusoidal longitudinal geometry of the transverse ridges, and the much larger clade (Baccaconularia, Glyptoconularia, Metaconularia, Pseudoconularia, Conularia, Ctenoconularia, Archaeoconularia, Notoconularia, Climacoconus, Paraconularia, Reticulaconularia) is supported by the presence of external tubercles, which, however, were lost in the clade (Notoconularia, Climacoconus, Paraconularia, Reticulaconularia). As proposed by Van Iten et al. (2000) , the clade (Notoconularia, Climacoconus, Paraconularia, Reticulaconularia) is supported by the termination and alternation of the transverse ribs in the corner sulcus. The previously recognized subfamilies Conulariinae, Paraconulariinae and Ctenoconulariinae were not recovered from this analysis. The diagnostic features of Conulariinae (continuation of the transverse ornament across the corner sulcus and lack of carinae) and Ctenoconulariinae (presence of carinae) are symplesiomorphic or homoplastic, and Paraconulariinae is polyphyletic. The families Conulariellidae Kiderlen, 1937 and Conulariopsidae Sugiyama, 1942 , also recognized in the TIP, are monogeneric, and since they provide no additional phylogenetic information, should be abandoned. 相似文献

Chrysomela populi beetles feed on poplar leaves and extensively damage plantations. We investigated whether olfactory cues orientate landing and feeding. Young, unexpanded leaves of hybrid poplar emit constitutively a blend of monoterpenes, primarily ( E )- β -ocimene and linalool. This blend attracts inexperienced adults of C. populi that were not previously fed with poplar leaves. In mature leaves constitutively emitting isoprene, insect attack induces biosynthesis and emission of the same blend of monoterpenes, but in larger amount than in young leaves. The olfactometric test indicates that inexperienced beetles are more attracted by adult than by young attacked leaves, suggesting that attraction by induced monoterpenes is dose dependent. The blend does not attract adults that previously fed on poplar leaves. Insect-induced emission of monoterpenes peaks 4 d after the attack, and is also detected in non-attacked leaves. Induced monoterpene emission is associated in mature leaves with a larger decrease of isoprene emission. The reduction of isoprene emission is faster than photosynthesis reduction in attacked leaves, and also occurs in non-attacked leaves. Insect-induced monoterpenes are quickly and completely labelled by 13 C. It is speculated that photosynthetic carbon preferentially allocated to constitutive isoprene in healthy leaves is in part diverted to induced monoterpenes after the insect attack. 相似文献

Shrimps from the genus Lysmata are known because of their wide diversity of lifestyles, mating systems, symbiotic partnerships, and conspicuous coloration. They can occur in crowds (large aggregations), in small groups, or as socially monogamous pairs. Shrimps from this genus are rare, if not unique among crustaceans, because of their unusual sexual system. To date, the sexual system of all species investigated comprises a protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism: shrimps initially mature and reproduce as males and later in life turn into functional simultaneous hermaphrodites. The evolutionary relationships of the species within the genus are unsettled. A molecular phylogeny of the group may shed light on the evolutionary origins of the peculiar sexual and social systems of these shrimps and help resolve standing taxonomic questions long overdue. Using a 647-bp alignment of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA, we examined the phylogenetic relationship of 21 species of shrimps from the genus Lysmata from several biogeographical regions; the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indo-Pacific. The resulting phylogeny indicates that the genus is paraphyletic and includes the genus Exhippolysmata . The constituent species are subdivided into three well supported clades: one group exclusively composed of neotropical species; a second clade comprising the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic symbiotic fish cleaner shrimps; and a third clade including tropical and temperate species from the Atlantic and Pacific. The molecular phylogeny presented here does not support a historical contingency hypothesis, previously proposed to explain the origins of protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism within the genus. Furthermore, the present study shows that monogamous pair-living is restricted to one monophyletic group of shrimps and therefore probably evolved only once. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 415–424. 相似文献
