The karyotype of the Cretan spiny mouse Acomys minous was examined with chromosome banding techniques in 53 individuals from 12 localities of Crete, aiming to gain a more detailed knowledge on the chromosomal constitution and variability of its natural populations. We found that it consists of three Robertsonian (Rb) populations with 2n = 38, 2n = 40 and 2n = 42, respectively, the last one being reported for the first time, and with stable fundamental number (FNa = 66, FN = 68). The G‐banding pattern proves that the Rb populations are closely linked phylogenetically by the many common Rb fusions and the lack of monobrachial homologies. In addition, they appear to freely mate at their contact areas, producing viable and fertile hybrids. No other type of chromosomal rearrangement appears to have played part in the chromosomal evolution of this species, at least in the recent past, as indicated also by the study of the telomeric sequences. Heterochromatin appears to be restricted to the pericentromeric position of all acrocentric and most biarmed autosomes, as well as of the X chromosome, whereas the Y chromosome is uniformly, yet faintly heterochromatic. Chromosome banding comparison of the karyotypes in A. minous with those of the other species in the cahirinus group (i.e. Acomys cahirinus, Acomys cilicicus, and Acomys nesiotes) proves their very close phylogenetic relationship, further reinforced by the study of the cytochrome b sequences, and that A. minous possesses the ancestral karyotype of the group. It is suggested that at least two of the karyotypes that characterize A. minous today, pre‐existed in North Africa before it colonized Crete and that the specific status of the four members in the cahirinus group may need to be revisited. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 498–509. 相似文献

The bee genus Paratetrapedia represents a commonly collected group of bees and is especially diverse in forested areas of the Neotropics. Its taxonomy has remained poorly understood because of a lack of modern revisionary work and numerous species described as Tetrapedia whose type specimens have not been re‐examined in recent times. Here, a comprehensive study was carried out to review the taxonomy of the genus Paratetrapedia and to investigate cladistically the relationships amongst its species. Eighteen new species of Paratetrapedia are described, giving a total of 32 species in the genus. A phylogenetic analysis of the species of Paratetrapedia was carried out using 61 morphological characters for 41 terminal taxa. The phylogenetic results confirmed the monophyly of Paratetrapedia and allowed the recognition of five species groups: the lugubris, moesta, bicolor, lineata, and flavipennis groups. Nasutopedia gen. nov. , recognized as the sister group of Paratetrapedia and with its distribution restricted to the western forested portions of the Andean highlands, is proposed based on distinct morphology, its placement in the phylogenetic tree, and biogeographical patterns. Species of Paratetrapedia are especially diverse in the Amazon Forest; the eastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest contains four endemic species, and one species is endemic to the Cerrado of central Brazil. Paratetrapedia shows a biogeographical pattern similar to other Neotropical groups of bees and birds, with wide distribution and high diversity in lowland forests and whose sister taxon occurs on highlands of north‐western portions of the Andean cordillera. Identification keys for males and females of all species are provided, as well as distribution maps and illustrations of general external morphology and genitalia. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 162 , 351–442. 相似文献

1. Fish play a key role in the functioning of temperate shallow lakes by affecting nutrient exchange among habitats as well as lake trophic structure and dynamics. These processes are, in turn, strongly influenced by the abundance of submerged macrophytes, because piscivorous fish are often abundant at high macrophyte density. Whether this applies to warmer climates as well is virtually unknown. 2. To compare fish community structure and dynamics in plant beds between subtropical and temperate shallow lakes we conducted experiments with artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in a set of 10 shallow lakes in Uruguay (30°–35°S) and Denmark (55°–57°N), paired along a gradient of limnological characteristics. 3. The differences between regions were more pronounced than differences attributable to trophic state. The subtropical littoral fish communities were characterised by higher species richness, higher densities, higher biomass, higher trophic diversity (with predominance of omnivores and lack of true piscivores) and smaller body size than in the comparable temperate lakes. On average, fish densities were 93 ind. m−2 (±10 SE) in the subtropical and 10 ind. m−2 (±2 SE) in the temperate lakes. We found a twofold higher total fish biomass per unit of total phosphorus in the subtropical than in the temperate lakes, and as fish size is smaller in the former, the implication is that more energy reaches the littoral zone fish community of the warmer lakes. 4. Plant architecture affected the spatial distribution of fish within each climate zone. Thus, in the temperate zone fish exhibited higher densities among the artificial free‐floating plants while subtropical fish were denser in the artificial submerged plant beds. These patterns appeared in most lakes, regardless of water turbidity or trophic state. 5. The subtropical littoral fish communities resembled the fish communities typically occurring in temperate eutrophic and hypertrophic lakes. Our results add to the growing evidence that climate warming may lead to more complex and omnivory‐dominated food webs and higher density and dominance of smaller‐sized fish. This type of community structure may lead to a weakening of the trophic cascading effects commonly observed in temperate shallow lakes and a higher risk of eutrophication. 相似文献

We studied comparatively the muscle organization of several gastrotrich species, aiming at shedding some light on the evolutionary relationships among the taxa of the suborder Paucitubulatina. Under confocal laser scanning microscope, the circular muscles were present in the splanchnic position as incomplete circular rings in Musellifer delamarei (Chaetonotidae) and Xenotrichula intermedia (Xenotrichulidae) and as dorsoventral bands in Xenotrichula punctata, Heteroxenotrichula squamosa and Draculiciteria tesselata (Xenotrichulidae); in the somatic position, M. delamarei shares the presence of dorsoventral muscles with all the Xenotrichulidae, in contrast with the remaining Chaetonotidae that lack these muscles. Maximum parsimony analysis of the muscular characters confirmed monophyly of Paucitubulatina and Xenotrichulidae, while the Chaetonotidae was paraphyletic, with the exclusion of Musellifer , which is the most basal genus within the Paucitubulatina. Xenotrichulidae is the sister taxon to Chaetonotidae, which in turn has Polymerurus as the most basal taxon. In general, the results agree with recent phylogenetic inferences based on molecular characters and support the hypothesis that, within Paucitubulatina, dorsoventral muscles are plesiomorphies retained in marine, interstitial, hermaphroditic gastrotrichs. Dorsoventral muscles were subsequently lost during changes in lifestyle and reproduction modality that took place with the invasion of the freshwater environment. This new information prompted us to reconsider the systematization of Chaetonotidae, proposing the establishment of Muselliferidae fam. nov. to include the genera Musellifer and Diuronotus . © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 379–398. 相似文献

Evolution of life history traits in Leporidae: a test of nest predation and seasonality hypotheses 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Recently, it has been proposed that adult mortality schedules may be responsible for latitudinal patterns of life history variation in passerine birds, whereas nest predation only could explain within latitude patterns. Unfortunately, no independent test has been performed regarding the importance of nest predation with different taxa. In the present study, seasonality and nest predation hypotheses explaining variations in gestation time and litter size in 17 lagomorph species were tested. Among latitude patterns were analysed using the phylogenetic independent contrast method of Felsenstein and within latitude patterns were analysed by the pairwise comparative method. The results obtained indicate that latitudinal patterns observed in both variables are explained by different factors: seasonality for litter size and nest predation for gestation time. Litter size variations within latitudes are also explained by differences in nest predation, supporting previous hypotheses. In conclusion, the present study suggests that, when compared among latitudes, different life history traits (e.g. litter size and gestation time) may be shaped by different selective forces and that the effects of nest predation may be high both within and between latitudes. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 603–610. 相似文献

The relationships between Dactylorhiza romana and D. saccifera from southern Italy were analysed. These two species, both with 2 n = 2 x = 40 chromosomes and belonging to different sections of the genus, were distinguishable on the basis of karyotype structure and heterochromatin amounts and distribution. Their C-banded karyotypes differed considerably. D. saccifera showed most chromosomes with banded regions in the short arms, whereas in D. romana the bands were located mostly at telomeric regions of longer arms. Several individuals of D. romana had one or two very large heterochromatic supernumerary chromosomes. Based on evidence resulting from karyotype structure and heterochromatin distribution in the two species and on the genetic distances derived from the comparison of ITS sequences, it is suggested that D. romana represents a primitive form with respect to D. saccifera and is a possible intermediate step in the evolution of the genus Dactylorhiza from the 42-chromosome Orchis group. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 138 , 85–91. 相似文献

Can warm climate‐related structure of littoral predator assemblies weaken the clear water state in shallow lakes? 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Shallow lakes, the most abundant lake type in the world, are very sensitive to climatic changes. The structure and functioning of shallow lakes are greatly impacted by submerged plants, and these may be affected by climate warming in various, contrasting, ways. Following a space‐for‐time substitution approach, we aimed to analyse the role of aquatic (submerged and free‐floating) plants in shallow lakes under warm climates. We introduced artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in five comparable lakes located in the temperate zone (Denmark, 55–57 °N) and in the subtropical zone (Uruguay, 30–35 °S), with the aim to study the structure and dynamics of the main associated communities. Regardless of differences in environmental variables, such as area, water transparency and nutrient status, we found consistent patterns in littoral community dynamics and structure (i.e. densities and composition of fish, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and periphyton) within, but substantial differences between, the two regions. Subtropical fish communities within the macrophyte beds exhibited higher diversity, higher density, smaller size, lower relative abundance of potentially piscivores, and a preference for submerged plants, compared with otherwise similar temperate lakes. By contrast, macroinvertebrates and cladocerans had higher taxon richness and densities, and periphyton higher biomass, in the temperate lakes. Several indicators suggest that the fish predation pressure was much stronger among the plants in the subtropical lakes. The antipredator behaviour of cladocerans also differed significantly between climate zones. Submerged and free‐floating plants exerted different effects on the spatial distribution of the main communities, the effects differing between the climate zones. In the temperate lakes, submerged plants promoted trophic interactions with potentially positive cascading effects on water transparency, in contrast to the free‐floating plants, and in strong contrast to the findings in the subtropical lakes. The higher impact of fish may result in higher sensitivity of warm lakes to external changes (e.g. increase in nutrient loading or water level changes). The current process of warming, particularly in temperate lakes, may entail an increased sensitivity to eutrophication, and a threat to the high diversity, clear water state. 相似文献

1. Small cladocerans, copepod nauplii and rotifers often dominate the zooplankton community in tropical and subtropical lakes. This is probably because of high predation pressure by small omnivorous–planktivorous fish, but experimental evidence is scarce.
2. This study used two approaches to test the effect of the small omnivorous–planktivorous fish species Jenynsia multidentata , which is frequently abundant in (sub)tropical eutrophic lakes in South America, on the size distribution of zooplankton. In Lake Blanca (Uruguay), which lacks any piscivores, we sampled seasonally for both fish and zooplankton. We also conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment with treatments containing or lacking J. multidentata .
3. Together, the empirical and experimental data suggest that J. multidentata predation plays an important role in modulating the size structure of the zooplankton community in subtropical lakes. In the absence of J. multidentata , stocked large-sized zooplankters like Daphnia obtusa were abundant in the experiments, while small-sized zooplankton dominated in the presence of fish, as they did in the lake itself from spring to the end of the season. 相似文献
