The bee genus Paratetrapedia represents a commonly collected group of bees and is especially diverse in forested areas of the Neotropics. Its taxonomy has remained poorly understood because of a lack of modern revisionary work and numerous species described as Tetrapedia whose type specimens have not been re‐examined in recent times. Here, a comprehensive study was carried out to review the taxonomy of the genus Paratetrapedia and to investigate cladistically the relationships amongst its species. Eighteen new species of Paratetrapedia are described, giving a total of 32 species in the genus. A phylogenetic analysis of the species of Paratetrapedia was carried out using 61 morphological characters for 41 terminal taxa. The phylogenetic results confirmed the monophyly of Paratetrapedia and allowed the recognition of five species groups: the lugubris, moesta, bicolor, lineata, and flavipennis groups. Nasutopedia gen. nov. , recognized as the sister group of Paratetrapedia and with its distribution restricted to the western forested portions of the Andean highlands, is proposed based on distinct morphology, its placement in the phylogenetic tree, and biogeographical patterns. Species of Paratetrapedia are especially diverse in the Amazon Forest; the eastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest contains four endemic species, and one species is endemic to the Cerrado of central Brazil. Paratetrapedia shows a biogeographical pattern similar to other Neotropical groups of bees and birds, with wide distribution and high diversity in lowland forests and whose sister taxon occurs on highlands of north‐western portions of the Andean cordillera. Fungal histidine kinases (HKs) have been implicated in different processes, such as the osmostress response, hyphal development, sensitivity to fungicides and virulence. Members of HK class III are known to signal through the HOG mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK), but possible interactions with other MAPKs have not been explored. In this study, we have characterized fhk1, encoding a putative class III HK from the soil‐borne vascular wilt pathogen Fusarium oxysporum. Inactivation of fhk1 resulted in resistance to phenylpyrrole and dicarboximide fungicides, as well as increased sensitivity to hyperosmotic stress and menadione‐induced oxidative stress. The osmosensitivity of Δfhk1 mutants was associated with a striking and previously unreported change in colony morphology. The Δfhk1 strains showed a significant decrease in virulence on tomato plants. Epistatic analysis between Fhk1 and the Fmk1 MAPK cascade indicated that Fhk1 does not function upstream of Fmk1, but that the two pathways may interact to control the response to menadione‐induced oxidative stress.  相似文献

We studied comparatively the muscle organization of several gastrotrich species, aiming at shedding some light on the evolutionary relationships among the taxa of the suborder Paucitubulatina. Under confocal laser scanning microscope, the circular muscles were present in the splanchnic position as incomplete circular rings in Musellifer delamarei (Chaetonotidae) and Xenotrichula intermedia (Xenotrichulidae) and as dorsoventral bands in Xenotrichula punctata, Heteroxenotrichula squamosa and Draculiciteria tesselata (Xenotrichulidae); in the somatic position, M. delamarei shares the presence of dorsoventral muscles with all the Xenotrichulidae, in contrast with the remaining Chaetonotidae that lack these muscles. Maximum parsimony analysis of the muscular characters confirmed monophyly of Paucitubulatina and Xenotrichulidae, while the Chaetonotidae was paraphyletic, with the exclusion of Musellifer , which is the most basal genus within the Paucitubulatina. Xenotrichulidae is the sister taxon to Chaetonotidae, which in turn has Polymerurus as the most basal taxon. In general, the results agree with recent phylogenetic inferences based on molecular characters and support the hypothesis that, within Paucitubulatina, dorsoventral muscles are plesiomorphies retained in marine, interstitial, hermaphroditic gastrotrichs. Dorsoventral muscles were subsequently lost during changes in lifestyle and reproduction modality that took place with the invasion of the freshwater environment. Recently, it has been proposed that adult mortality schedules may be responsible for latitudinal patterns of life history variation in passerine birds, whereas nest predation only could explain within latitude patterns. Unfortunately, no independent test has been performed regarding the importance of nest predation with different taxa. In the present study, seasonality and nest predation hypotheses explaining variations in gestation time and litter size in 17 lagomorph species were tested. Among latitude patterns were analysed using the phylogenetic independent contrast method of Felsenstein and within latitude patterns were analysed by the pairwise comparative method. The results obtained indicate that latitudinal patterns observed in both variables are explained by different factors: seasonality for litter size and nest predation for gestation time. Litter size variations within latitudes are also explained by differences in nest predation, supporting previous hypotheses. In conclusion, the present study suggests that, when compared among latitudes, different life history traits (e.g. litter size and gestation time) may be shaped by different selective forces and that the effects of nest predation may be high both within and between latitudes.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 603–610.  相似文献

Theory predicts marked sexual dimorphism in terms of body size and body structures used as weapons (e.g. chelipeds) in gonochoric species with intense male sexual competition for receptive females and reduced or no sexual dimorphism in species where competition among males is trivial. We tested this hypothesis using a pair of closely‐related species of symbiotic porcelain crabs as a model. In one species that inhabits sea anemones solitarily, competition among males for receptive females is unimportant. In a second species that dwells as dense aggregations on sea urchins, male–male competition for sexual partners is recurrent. We expected considerable sexual dimorphism in body size and weaponry in the urchin‐dwelling crab and reduced sexual dimorphism in the anemone‐dwelling crab. In agreement with expectations, in the urchin‐dwelling crab, male body size was, on average, larger than that of females and males invested considerably more to cheliped length than females. Also supporting theoretical considerations, in the anemone‐dwelling crab, sexual dimorphism in terms of body size was not detected and differences between the sexes in investment to cheliped length were minor. Interestingly, chelipeds were more developed both in males and females of the anemone‐dwelling crab than in the urchin‐dwelling crab as a result of the importance of these structures for monopolization of their naturally scarce anemone hosts. Another difference between the studied species was the existence of two clearly distinguishable ontogenetic phases in males of the urchin‐dwelling crab but not in males of the anemone‐dwelling crab. Whether the two different male morphs display different male reproductive strategies in the urchin‐dwelling crab remains to be addressed. The carbon balance and changes in leaf structure in Clusia minorL., were investigated in controlled conditions with regardto nitrogen supply and responses to low and high photosyntheticallyactive radiation (PAR). Nitrogen deficiency and high PAR ledto the production of smaller leaves with higher specific leafdry weight (SLDW) and higher leaf water content, but with lowerchlorophyll content. Nitrogen and PAR levels at growth alsoaffected CO2 exchange and leaf area. In – N conditions,total daily net CO2 uptake and leaf area accumulation were slightlyless for high-PAR-grown plants. In contrast, high-PAR-grownplants supplied with nitrogen showed about a 4-fold higher totaldaily CO2 uptake and about twice the total leaf area of low-PAR-grownplants. Although total daily net CO2 uptake of +N plants wasonly slightly higher than –N plants under the low PARlevel, –N plants produced almost three times more leafarea but with lower SLDW. Under well-watered conditions, low-PAR-grownplants showed only CO2 evolution during the night and malicacid levels decreased. However, there was considerable night-timeaccumulation of titratable protons due to day/night changesin citric acid levels. High-PAR-grown plants showed net CO2uptake, malate and citrate accumulation during the dark period.However, most of the CO2 fixed at night probably came from respiratoryCO2. Positive night-time CO2 exchange was readily observed forlow-PAR-grown plants when they were transferred to high PARconditions or when they were submitted to water stress. In plantsgrown in high and low PAR, CAM leads to a substantial increasein daily water use efficiency for water-stressed plants, althoughtotal net CO2 uptake decreased.  相似文献

The effects of full-spectrum solar radiation and of solar radiation deprived of total u.v. radiation (λ<395 nm) on the endemic Mediterranean red alga Rissoella verruculosa (Bertoloni) J. Agardh were studied in situ in early summer, from sunrise to sunset. Photosynthetic performance, pigment content and the activities of enzymes related to nutrient uptake, were monitored under both radiation conditions throughout a daylight period.
The doses of solar radiation, measured on the day during which the experiments were carried out (24 June 1997), were 9228·25, 1109·70 and 13·03 kJ m−2 for PAR (λ=400–700 nm), u.v.-A (λ=315–400 nm) and u.v.-B (λ=280–315 nm), respectively. Under these conditions, a clear daily variation in photosynthetic performance was found. However, no significant differences were detected between the two radiation conditions. At noon, strong sunlight impaired O2 evolution by 75%, but complete recovery occurred during the afternoon, reaching similar values to those measured in the early morning. By contrast, photoinhibition of optimal quantum yield ( F v/ F m), and the relative electron transport rate was followed by only a slight recovery during the afternoon. The rate of photosynthesis in air (simulating emersion conditions), estimated by CO2 exchange, showed a negative balance at noon, which was accentuated in plants exposed to the full-solar spectrum.
Significant changes in the activities of nitrate reductase and carbonic anhydrase were found throughout the day under both radiation conditions. In thalli receiving solar radiation deprived of u.v., total CA activity decreased throughout the day. However, in thalli exposed to full-spectrum solar radiation, the activity of the enzyme tended to increase in the afternoon, correlating with an increase in NR activity.  相似文献
