1. Electron transport system (ETS) activity and oxygen consumption were measured in three crustacean species (Gammarus fossarum, Asellus aquaticus and Niphargus sphagnicolus) that differ in their pH tolerance. Measurements were made under four different pH regimes: strongly acid (pH 4.5–5.0), weakly acid (5.5–6.0), ‘neutral’ (7.0–7.8) and alkaline (8.5–9.0). 2. The significantly lower ETS activity/respiration (ETS/R) ratios observed in strongly acid water than in neutral and alkaline water indicate an effect of acidity on metabolism of the organisms. The main reason for the lower ratios is not increased oxygen consumption (except for G. fossarum in strongly acid water) but decreased ETS activity. Metabolic potential was lower in strongly and weakly acid water than in neutral water. Therefore, efficient exploitation of metabolic potential (i.e. of relatively large production of ATP with the existing enzyme machinery) probably enables N. sphagnicolus and A. aquaticus to survive in an acid environment. 3. Increased oxygen consumption of G. fossarum in strongly acid water indicates an acid stress that leads to the collapse of metabolism and, consequent death of the animals. 4. Although N. sphagnicolus is found exclusively in permanently acid water, no negative effect of alkaline water on metabolism was observed. This species can, therefore, be best considered as an acid‐resistant species, not an acidobiont.  相似文献

For 12 days in May 2005, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), as well as several other screening venues in Washington, D.C., hosted a group of renowned indigenous filmmakers from around the globe for the groundbreaking film showcase, "First Nations/First Features: A Showcase of World Indigenous Film and Media." This film showcase highlighted the innovative ways in which indigenous filmmakers draw on indigenous storytelling practices to create cinematic visions that honor their long-standing indigenous cultural worlds while reaching local and world audiences. In this essay, I highlight the onscreen impact through an analysis of several films featured in First Nations/First Features, as well as the offscreen impact emphasizing how the indigenous directors used this opportunity to strengthen social networks and share experience in this industry, which may develop into future collaborative film projects.  相似文献

After injection of tritiated phenylalanine, microautoradiographs of longitudinal sections of the stumps of the forelegs of Triturus vulgairs 1 hour, 2, 3 and 9 hours after amputation and also of the opposite limb (reference) were prepared for quantitative measurements. The epidermal tissue (stratum basale) was examined with regard to proximo-distal changes of nuclear volume and protein synthesis. In the stratum basale of the stump the values for the parameters examined were similar to those of the reference limbs 1h and 2h after amputation, but 3h and 9h after amputation areas of increased nuclear volume were observed as well as an increased rate of protein synthesis per unit of nuclear volume. Protein synthesis in the epidermis of the stump was extremely low 1h after amputation. Protein synthesis in the reference epidermis was also reduced at this time, but then increased although the nuclear volume remained constant.  相似文献

Octopus vulgaris prey upon many gastropod species by boringholes in the shell, weakening the prey with a venom, removingthe entire prey, and eating it. When offered Strombus raninusthe Octopus quickly grasped the conch with one or a few arms,checked for occupancy by inserting an arm tip into the aperture,and passed the shell under the web to the mouth. The shell washeld against the buccal mass by the circumoral suckers and raspedrepeatedly with the radula, repositioned, and rasped again.There were brief pauses of apparent inactivity between the periodsof active rasping. The shell was penetrated at an approximatemaximal rate of 1.25 mm per hour. The boreholes averaged 0.93mm in outer diameter, 0.47 mm in inner diameter and 0.88 mmin depth. The boreholes were extremely variable in shape, size,and position on the spire. There was a marked preference forindividual animals to bore in a particular sector of the spire.Apparently the animals orient the shells by using the lip asa point of reference because lipless shells had the boreholesrandomly distributed around the shell.  相似文献

The bulk ore carrier Apollo Sea sank near Dassen Island, South Africa, on 20 June 1994 during a period of winter storms. Approximately 10 000 African (Jackass) Penguins Spheniscus demersus were oiled, collected and transported to the SANCCOB rescue centre; 5213 were released after cleaning, 4076 with flipper bands. We believe that most of the penguins oiled during this incident reached an island or the mainland alive, and that there was no mass mortality in the wild at the time of the oil spill. Birds from all parts of the breeding range were oiled, but most were from Robben and Dassen Islands. The overwhelming majority of released birds made the transition from the rescue centre to the wild successfully; 2652 had been resighted at breeding colonies within two years of their release; the cumulative number of birds was increasing steadily and an asymptote had not been reached by August 1996. There was a wide dispersal of released penguins, with recoveries and resightings over 1800 km of coastline between Algoa Bay and Walvis Bay.  相似文献

1. Bacteria can be an important resource for zooplankton production in aquatic food webs, although the degree to which bacteria sustain zooplankton growth and reproduction is not clear. We performed a growth experiment with Daphnia galeata feeding on different ratios of P‐replete Pseudomonas and Rhodomonas, ranging from a 100% bacterial to a 100% algal diet. 2. A pure bacterial diet did not support survival, growth or reproduction of D. galeata. While a 20% share of Rhodomonas in the food allowed survival of daphniids, the occurrence of offspring on a 50% algal diet indicated that the threshold for successful reproduction was between those two proportions of algal food. Increasing the proportion of the alga further increased growth and reproductive output, indicating that Rhodomonas was a higher‐quality food than Pseudomonas. 3. A subsequent labelling experiment demonstrated that D. galeata incorporated phosphorus from Pseudomonas and Rhodomonas with similar efficiency, whereas carbon was incorporated more efficiently from Pseudomonas than from Rhodomonas. 4. we hypothesise that inadequate levels of essential biochemicals in pure bacterial diets led to decreased Daphnia performance. Concentrations of fatty acids in general, and especially of polyunsaturated fatty acids, were much lower in Pseudomonas than in Rhodomonas. This difference could explain the different growth and reproduction responses, although limitation by other essential biochemicals (e.g. sterols) cannot be ruled out. 5. Hence, where they dominate, bacteria may provide a significant part of the elemental flux to species feeding higher in the food web on the short term. However, the performance of consumers may be constrained by essential biochemicals.  相似文献

A dynamic water and activity model was developed to assess how efficiently lichens can exploit in situ rain and humid air. The capacity to rehydrate and activate photosynthesis [i.e. photosystem II (PSII)] by these water sources was compared among four hydrophilic and one generalist epiphytic lichen. Hydration status, potential (instant activation) and realized (delayed activation) day‐light activity were simulated using a model based on species‐specific hydration, PSII activation characteristics and in situ water content for Platismatia norvegica in three microclimatic scenarios. The results showed that delayed PSII activation could have profound effects on lichens' ability to exploit environmental water sources. During rain, realized activity was reduced by 19, 34 and 56% compared to simulations assuming instant activation for three hydrophilic lichens in the driest microclimate. During humid air, the reduction was 81% for the most extreme species and scenario, because of slow hydration and low equilibrium water content. Many and brief hydration events may thus hamper species with slow activation and fast desiccation kinetics. No evidence of compensation by a ‘water‐holding’ morphology was observed among studied species. The developed model may provide a tool for identifying suitable habitats for long‐term persistence of lichens with physiological constraints.  相似文献
