Marine invasions are taking place at an increasing rate. When occurring in blooms, zooplanktivorous comb jellies of the genus Mnemiopsis are able to cause pelagic regime shifts in coastal areas and may cause the collapse of commercially important fish populations. Using microsatellites, developed for the first time in the phylum Ctenophora, we show that Mnemiopsis leidyi has colonized Eurasia from two source regions. Our preliminary data set included four sites within the putative source region (US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico) and 10 invaded locations in Eurasian waters. Bayesian clustering and phylogeographic approaches revealed the origin of earlier invasions of the Black and Caspian Sea in the 1980s/1990s within or close to the Gulf of Mexico, while the 2006 invasion of the North and Baltic Seas can be directly traced to New England (pairwise FST = 0). We found no evidence for mixing among both gene pools in the invaded areas. While the genetic diversity (allelic richness) remained similar in the Baltic Sea compared to the source region New England, it was reduced in the North Sea, supporting the view of an initial invasion of Northern Europe to a Baltic Sea port. In Black and Caspian Sea samples, we found a gradual decline in allelic richness compared to the Gulf of Mexico region, supporting a stepping‐stone model of colonization with two sequential genetic founder events. Our data also suggest that current practices of ballast water treatment are insufficient to prevent repeated invasions of gelatinous zooplankton.  相似文献

1. At a local scale, the species composition, diversity and spatial variation of wetland plant communities are determined primarily by spatial and temporal heterogeneity in their environments. Less is known about variation at a landscape‐level. The floodplain of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River in China includes hydrologically connected, subtropical wetlands with different hydrological characteristics. 2. We examined seed‐bank species composition and richness in marshes of two contrasting hydrological types: permanent marshes, fed by local runoff, and lakeshore marshes more closely connected to the regulated river. Lakeshore marshes are flooded annually to depth of approximately 1 m and during flooding they support an alternate, aquatic vegetation type. The soil seed bank in March was a comparative estimator of species diversity. At the beginning of the growing season it included seeds from both phases of alternating vegetation types associated with the annual hydrological cycle. 3. A regional pool of 101 species was detected in the seed banks of six wetlands associated with the river and its tributaries: 56 occurred in permanent marshes and 59 in lakeshore marshes, with only 15 common to both. Species rarefaction curves indicated that more species occurred in permanent than lakeshore marshes at equal numbers of individuals sampled. However, the more heterogeneous lakeshore seed banks were estimated (Chao 2) to have greater total species richness (81) than permanent marsh (60). 4. Analysis using Sørensen's coefficient of similarity and DCA ordination revealed complex variation, with much greater differences between hydrological types than within them, irrespective of geographical distance. The types also differed significantly in the composition of four functional groups of species. 5. Despite the potential for dispersal of propagules via the annually pulsing river system (hydrochory), at a regional and landscape scale, diversity is maintained largely by large‐scale temporal hydrological heterogeneity and smaller scale spatial and topographic heterogeneity.  相似文献

Interspecific aggression amongst nonhuman primates is rarely observed and has been mostly related to scenarios of resource competition. Interspecific infanticide is even rarer, and both the ultimate and proximate socio‐ecological factors explaining this behavior are still unclear. We report two cases of interspecific infanticide and five cases of interspecific infant‐directed aggression occurring in a well‐habituated primate community living in a fragmented landscape in Colombia. All cases were initiated by male brown spider monkeys (Ateles hybridus) and were directed toward infants of either red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus: n = 6 cases) or white‐fronted capuchins (Cebus albifrons: n = 1 case). One individual, a subadult spider monkey male, was involved in all but one case of interspecific infanticide or aggression. Other adult spider monkeys participated in interspecific aggression that did not escalate into potentially lethal encounters. We suggest that competition for food resources and space in a primate community living in high population densities and restricted to a forest fragment of ca. 65 ha might partly be driving the observed patterns of interspecific aggression. On the other hand, the fact that all but one case of interspecific infanticide and aggression involved the only subadult male spider monkey suggests this behavior might either be pathological or constitute a particular case of redirected aggression. Even if the underlying principles behind interspecific aggression and infanticide are poorly understood, they represent an important factor influencing the demographic trends of the primate community at this study site. Abstract We developed a snare for collection of black bear (Ursus americanus) hair that obtained a unique hair sample at each snare site, improved the quantity of collected hair compared to barbed-wire corrals, and was easy to deploy over a wide range of topographical features and habitat conditions. This device allowed us to implement intensive sampling methodology needed in mark-recapture experiments with minimal effort. By improving the quantity of hair collected, we also lowered the potential for bear identification errors at the lab. During 2003–2004, bears in 2 study areas triggered snares 1,104 times, which resulted in the collection of 981 hair samples. Of the samples we collected, 79% (775) produced valid genetic data. In 2003, 454 samples identified 79 genetically distinct individuals, and 321 samples identified 86 genetically distinct individuals in 2004. Analysis of capture-recapture data indicated that capture probabilities were affected by heterogeneity among individuals and behavioral responses, but showed little evidence of time effects. Consequently, we used the Pollock and Otto (1983) estimator for model Mbh to estimate abundance with reasonably good precision (CV: 12–14%). Density on the Steamboat and Toketee, Oregon, USA, study areas over the 2-year period averaged 19 bears/100 km2 and 22 bears/100 km2, respectively. Average capture and recapture probabilities over the 2 years of the study were 30% and 63%, respectively, indicating a trap-prone behavioral response. Knowledge of bear densities on the Steamboat and Toketee study areas will enable managers to set hunting quotas, advise land management agencies on habitat issues, and create a baseline database to assist in the long-term monitoring of bear trends in a changing landscape.  相似文献

Within populations, individual animals may vary considerably in morphology and ecology. The degree to which variation in morphology is related to ecological variation within a population remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether variation in body size and shape among sexes and age classes of the lizard Podarcis melisellensis translates in differential whole-animal performance (sprint speed, bite force), escape and prey attack behaviour in the field, microhabitat use and diet. Male and female adult lizards differed significantly in body size and head and limb proportions. These morphological differences were reflected in differences in bite strength, but not in sprint speed. Accordingly, field measurements of escape behaviour and prey attack speed did not differ between the sexes, but males ate larger, harder and faster prey than females. In addition to differences in body size, juveniles diverged from adults in relative limb and head dimensions. These shape differences may explain the relatively high sprint and bite capacities of juvenile lizards. Ontogenetic variation in morphology and performance is strongly reflected in the behaviour and ecology in the field, with juveniles differing from adults in aspects of their microhabitat use, escape behaviour and diet.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 251–264.  相似文献

The reconstruction of evolutionary relationships among a group of closely‐related taxa provides a valuable window onto their biogeographic history. This is the first such molecular phylogenetic study to survey all three taxa of the Chlorocebus lhoesti species group, a group of Old World monkeys that includes C. lhoesti, Chlorocebus preussi, and Chlorocebus solatus. Representatives of each species were surveyed for two Y‐chromosomal genes, TSPY (~2240 bp) and SRY (~780 bp), and one X‐chromosomal intergenic region (~9300 bp) homologous to a portion of human Xq13.3. Maximum likelihood topologies inferred from these sequences confirm that the lhoesti group is monophyletic within the tribe Cercopithecini, as suggested by earlier karyotype studies. Within this group, C. lhoesti (Albertine region) and C. preussi (Cameroon, Nigeria, Bioko) cluster to the exclusion of C. solatus (Gabon). This phylogeographic pattern, evaluated in the context of Pleistocene glacial cycles and lhoesti group ecology, suggests: (1) the common ancestor of the group probably arose in west central Africa, (2) dispersal to the Albertine region is likely to have occurred during a glacial maximum, rather than an interglacial pluvial, and (3) this dispersal probably occurred via a path north of the Congo Basin. Divergence date calculations suggest C. solatus separated from the ancestral stock at ~2.1 Ma, whereas C. preussi and C. lhoesti bifurcated later, at ~0.5 Ma. Taken together, these evolutionary analyses draw attention to one period in the Pleistocene (~0.5 MYA) when a dispersal corridor suitable to montane taxa is likely to have connected the highlands of east central and west central Africa. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 154 , 408–418.  相似文献

Relations between microhabitat use and limb shape in phrynosomatid lizards   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
With the exception of the well-documented case for anoline lizards, recent studies have found few evolutionary relationships between morphology and habitat use in lizards despite clear-cut biomechanical predictions. One of the factors typically hampering these analyses is the clustering of habitat use within evolutionary lineages. In the present study, body shape was quantified for male and female lizards of 30 species of phrynosomatid lizards. This group was selected as little clustering of ecological variables seemed to be present. The results of traditional analyses indicate that evolutionary correlates of habitat use were prominent in the hindlimbs of both sexes. Species living in open habitats are characterized by longer femurs, and longer hindlimbs relative to the forelimb. Moreover, males from ground-dwelling species utilizing open habitats have longer toes on the hind foot than males from climbing species. Phylogenetic analyses indicated strong evolutionary associations between habitat use and the relative length of front and hindlimbs, with species from open terrestrial habitats having significantly shorter frontlimbs relative to their hindlimb than rock or tree climbing species. Evolutionary associations between morphology and habitat use were generally stronger for male lizards, indicating a potentially important contribution of sexual selection to the evolution of differences in limb proportions.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 149–163.  相似文献

Copper tolerance in the green alga, Chlorella vulgaris   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. The effect of sub-lethal concentrations of copper upon tolerant and non-tolerant strains of Chlorella vulgaris was investigated. Copper concentrations of 0.2 and 0.4 mg dm−3 increased the lag phase of both strains, the effect being greater in the non-tolerant strain. No difference was observed in the toxicity of copper to the photosynthetic rates of the isolated chloroplasts of either strain. However, significant differences were shown at the whole cell level.
Lower copper uptake was shown by the tolerant cells. In both strains initial uptake of copper was followed by a phase of desorption before cell division occurred. In cultures of both strains the concentration of ionic copper was decreased by complexation with extracellular organic material. Over a 14 day growth period more organic material was produced by the tolerant cells. The organic material produced by the tolerant cell formed organo-copper complexes which had a higher conditional stability constant.
It is proposed that the cell wall acts as a barrier to copper in the tolerant cells and prevents copper from affecting cell metabolism. Organo-copper complexation occurs at this barrier and this complex is then released into the medium.  相似文献
