The conservation of many endothermic species depends critically on the availability of suitable retreat sites, yet we know little about the variation in thermal quality of such microhabitats. Studies of thermal habitat suitability for birds and mammals must account for the effect of endothermic heat production on their microclimates. For example, endotherms may significantly raise the air temperature in their retreat sites and this effect must be considered when assessing retreat site quality. We devised an inexpensive means by which to construct pseudo‐endothermic ‘environmental temperature’ models with the use of disposable heat pads. We applied this technique to investigate thermal aspects of nest box design, illustrating the potential positive and negative effects of nest box insulation depending on the environmental context. We suggest that, from a thermal perspective, the avoidance of heat stress is an important and underappreciated issue in the retreat site selection of endotherms. 相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences was used to test the validity of morphospecies of catfishes of the family Astroblepidae inhabiting the southern‐most limit of their Andean distribution in the upper Ucayali and upper Madre de Dios river basins. Population samples of morphospecies designated a priori on the basis of morphological features were further diagnosed by the presence of unique and unreversed molecular synapomorphies, thereby confirming species validity for seven of nine cases. Although each are distinguished by unique combinations of morphological features, two morphospecies (designated F and H) cannot be diagnosed on the basis of apomorphic changes in molecular sequence that did not also occur in other astroblepid morphospecies or outgroup taxa. Further, one morphospecies (species G) was recovered as nested within the assemblage of populations sampled from morphospecies F, whose morphological diagnosis does not involve unique or apomorphic characters. In contrast, the absence of corroborating molecular apomorphies for species H, otherwise recognized by distinctive and uniquely derived morphological characters, suggests a history of rapid divergence and insufficient time for fixation of genetic differences. Species sharing syntopic distributions were not recovered as sister groups, and in some cases species distributed in adjacent river drainage basins were not more closely related to one another than to species distributed in more distant drainages. Three independent instances were observed of sister‐group relationships involving species distributed in both the Apurimac and Urubamba rivers (Ucayali drainage). These observations combine to suggest that the current distribution of astroblepid species in the southern region may have arisen via a complex history involving both divergence between and dispersal amongst drainage basins that is probably repeated numerous times throughout the Andean distribution of the group. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 162 , 90–102. 相似文献

Variation in phenotype between species or populations of the same species living in different habitats is often explained in an adaptive context with local habitat differences driving selection on morphological traits relevant in a given ecological context. Previous studies have demonstrated significant differences in limb and tail morphology between populations of the Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion pumilum) living in closed vs. open habitats. However, the adaptive nature of the observed differences remains unclear. Here, we quantify the structural habitat use in two different populations, test whether the random habitat differs between the two sites and whether or not chameleons select perches randomly. Next, we test whether morphology is correlated with structural habitat use and test for differences in performance between populations. Our results demonstrate that habitats are structurally different, that chameleons in the two populations use perches of different diameters and that, in one of the populations, chameleons select relatively wider perches than available at random. Performance traits (hand and tail grip performance and sprint speed) are correlated with morphology (hand size, tail length and tibia length) and differ between sexes and populations. Moreover, performance is dependent on dowel size. These results suggest that differences in performance between populations are indeed adaptive and indicate the existence of true ecomorphs in chameleons of the genus Bradypodion. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 692–700. 相似文献

A small, articulated basal ornithopod skeleton from the Frenchman Formation (late Maastrichtian) of Saskatchewan (RSM P 1225.1), previously referred to the taxon Thescelosaurus, differs from both recognized species of this taxon (Thescelosaurus neglectus and Thescelosaurus garbanii). The differences are taxonomically informative and we recognize this specimen as the holotype of a new species, Thescelosaurus assiniboiensis sp. nov. , diagnosed by the presence of two autapomorphies, and displaying plesiomorphic traits more similar to those of Parksosaurus, than to those of the other Thescelosaurus species. The Frenchman Formation also harbours an intriguing faunal assemblage in which Thescelosaurus represents one of the most abundant dinosaur taxa, and preserves a relatively high proportion of small (putatively juvenile and subadult) specimens of many dinosaur taxa. Further work that increases the faunal sample from this formation, and that permits quantitative comparisons with contemporary formations, will determine whether or not these differences are well supported, and will determine their ultimate palaeobiological significance. Identification of a third species of Thescelosaurus from the late Maastrichtian of North America suggests that this taxon was more diverse than previously recognized, and shows an increase in diversity from the Campanian through the late Maastrichtian, contrasting the trends seen in most other ornithischian clades. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 163 , 1157–1198. 相似文献

Past findings have established how the faster growth, greaterreproductive output and/or longer survival that are associatedwith heterosis and genomic diversity measured as multi-locusheterozygosity stem from slower intensities with which proteinsare renewed and replaced (=protein turnover). Slower turnoverresults in lower energy requirements and reduced metabolic sensitivityto environmental change, representing a mechanistic basis forevolutionary consequences of genetic polymorphism. To determinethe genetic and functional basis of differences in whole-bodyprotein turnover, we have begun to resolve different proteolyticpathways, searching for genetic polymorphisms with a directeffect upon proteolysis, and assessing the metabolic and physiologicalconsequences of those genetic influences in the mussel Mytilusedulis. Our recent work has established the physiological importanceof lysosomal enzymes under normal conditions of basal proteolysis, and shown that associated effects on energy flux may vary accordingto functional differences between separate enzymes. Data arepresented here which compare metabolic consequences of polymorphismin the lysosomal aminopeptidases Lap-1 and Lap-2. Findings establishthat metabolic and phenotypic effects of genetic polymorphismresult directly from genetic variation at the loci coding forthese peptidases, rather than from linked loci. They also illustratethe complexity of interrelations that ultimately influence theevolutionary consequences of genomic diversity, including associatedinfluences of both Lap-1 and Lap-2 on energy requirements andanimal condition. We impress that energy requirements for proteinturnover may represent a functional basis for epistasis, includingassociations whereby advantages of genetic polymorphism aregreatest at loci that code for enzymes acting in both proteincatabolism and energy provision. 相似文献

Seasonal declines in incubation periods of Brünnich's Guillemots Una lomvia:testing proximate causes
In many species of bird, eggs laid late in the laying period hatch after a shorter incubation period than do eggs laid early. These seasonal declines in incubation period are generally thought to confer evolutionary advantages, but the proximate mechanisms that underlie them are poorly understood. Seasonal declines in incubation period are usually attributed to: (1) seasonal increases in ambient air temperatures; (2) seasonal changes in the behaviour of incubating birds; and/or (3) seasonal declines in egg size. In a previous study, Common Guillemot Una aalge incubation periods declined with laying date at a low-Arctic colony. As there was no support for hypotheses 1 or 2, it was suggested that this occurred because egg size declined with laying date, but eggs were not measured in that study. We recorded similar seasonal declines in the incubation periods of the single eggs laid by Brünnich's Guillemots Una lomvia at two low-Arctic colonies in four years. Neither seasonal variation in ambient air temperatures, nor in the behaviour of incubating adults, appeared to cause the declines. As predicted for Common Guillemots, incubation period increased with egg size among Briinnich's Guillemots, in one of two years. However, incubation period declined with laying date in the absence of corresponding declines in egg size. We conclude that none of the three commonly proposed proximate mechanisms adequately explains the seasonal variation in guillemot incubation periods. Several testable, alternative mechanisms are explored. 相似文献
