Previous investigations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata , in Trinidad have demonstrated rapid population differentiation at small geographic scales. However, most studies to date have focused on localities in Trinidad's Northern Range where barrier water falls mark sharp discontinuities in the selection regime and limit scope for gene flow. There is little information on the ecology of the guppy in the rest of the island even though its distribution amongst fish communities and habitats has important evolutionary implications. To determine how large-scale distribution patterns might affect the evolutionary potential of the guppy we surveyed 80 sites representative of a broad range of freshwater environments. We found guppies, which occurred in 80% of our samples, to be the most widely distributed freshwater fish in Trinidad. Guppies are common in predator-rich and turbid habitats, precisely those localities where female preferences are likely to be undermined. Moreover, the widespread distribution of this adaptable species, combined with its promiscuous mating system, may promote gene flow across geographical scales that transcend local selection regimes. These factors are likely to impede the evolution of reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Geographic patterns of genetic variation are strongly influenced by historical changes in species habitats. Whether such patterns are common to co‐distributed taxa may depend on the extent to which species vary in ecology and vagility. We investigated whether broad‐scale phylogeographic patterns common to a number of small‐bodied vertebrate and invertebrate species in eastern Australian forests were reflected in the population genetic structure of an Australo‐Papuan forest marsupial, the red‐legged pademelon (Macropodidae: Thylogale stigmatica). Strong genetic structuring of mtDNA haplotypes indicated the persistence of T. stigmatica populations across eastern Australia and southern New Guinea in Pleistocene refugial areas consistent with those inferred from studies of smaller, poorly dispersing species. However, there was limited divergence of haplotypes across two known historical barriers in the northeastern Wet Tropics (Black Mountain Barrier) and coastal mideastern Queensland (Burdekin Gap) regions. Lack of divergence across these barriers may reflect post‐glacial recolonization of forests from a large, central refugium in the Wet Tropics. Additionally, genetic structure is not consistent with the present delimitation of subspecies T. s. wilcoxi and T. s. stigmatica across the Burdekin Gap. Instead, the genetic division occurs further to the south in mideastern Queensland. Thus, while larger‐bodied marsupials such as T. stigmatica did persist in Pleistocene refugia common to a number of other forest‐restricted species, species‐specific local extinction and recolonization events have resulted in cryptic patterns of genetic variation. Our study demonstrates the importance of understanding individualistic responses to historical climate change in order to adequately conserve genetic diversity and the evolutionary potential of species.  相似文献

1. The impact of immigration on the recovery of diatom assemblages after chronic exposure to copper was investigated in laboratory microcosms. 2. We examined the recovery trajectories of copper‐contaminated biofilms after reducing copper stress and with or without the possibility of immigration from unimpaired communities. 3. The biofilms mixed with unimpaired communities returned to a ‘control’ assemblage structure within 6 weeks, with recovery patterns depending on the endpoint considered (i.e. 2 weeks for relative abundances of diatom species but 6 weeks for total diatom biomass). In contrast, no recovery was observed in assemblages placed under control conditions without external immigrants. 4. Immigration has important effects on the recovery of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of biofilms.  相似文献

Quantitative and spatial data for orchid pollination are scarce and may be important tools for reintroduction and conservation; however, conclusions cannot be drawn on the basis of the typically infrequent and unpredictable pollination events. We carried out a novel, retrospective, spatial analysis of the pollination of the entire population of two miniature orchids, Erycina crista‐galli and Notylia barkeri, on coffee bushes in plantations at 900 m in Soconusco, south‐eastern Mexico. The numbers of mature flowering plants of both species in the experimental site were similar. Notylia barkeri produced nearly four times as many flowers, but a similar proportion of the total number of flowers produced was pollinated (1.23% and 1.48% for N. barkeri and E. crista‐galli, respectively). An estimated 29 919 977 (±4 983 995) seeds were produced by N. barkeri, nearly 12 times more than E. crista‐galli at 1 009 414 (±147 000). The pollinators of N. barkeri chose flower clusters at random and pollinated various flowers within a patch, whereas the pollinators of E. crista‐galli chose patches of flowers slightly more systematically, with less dependence on flower density, and appeared to dedicate less attention to each patch. For both species, pollinators slightly favoured larger clusters of flowers and left many individual and groups of flowers unvisited. To restore populations of these orchids in coffee plantations as a replacement habitat, N. barkeri should be planted in small, separate groups and E. crista‐galli in larger groups of individuals, dispersed regularly throughout the selected site to maximize the possibility that the flowers will be discovered by pollinators. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 448–459.  相似文献

Seasonal drought can severely impact leaf photosynthetic capacity. This is particularly important for Mediterranean forests, where precipitation is expected to decrease as a consequence of climate change. Impacts of increased drought on the photosynthetic capacity of the evergreen Quercus ilex were studied for two years in a mature forest submitted to long‐term throughfall exclusion. Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured on two successive leaf cohorts in a control and a dry plot. Exclusion significantly reduced leaf water potential in the dry treatment. In both treatments, light‐saturated net assimilation rate (Amax), stomatal conductance (gs), maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax), mesophyll conductance to CO2 (gm) and nitrogen investment in photosynthesis decreased markedly with soil water limitation during summer. The relationships between leaf photosynthetic parameters and leaf water potential remained identical in the two treatments. Leaf and canopy acclimation to progressive, long‐term drought occurred through changes in leaf area index, leaf mass per area and leaf chemical composition, but not through modifications of physiological parameters.  相似文献

Accelerated fibroblast accumulation, mitosis, and depositionof collagen during fibrotic processes are frequently precededby intense inflammatory exudates of mononuclear cells whichare derived from the peripheral blood. In vitro, we examinedthe role of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in activationof human fibroblasts. The adherent mononuclear phagocyte, ormonocyte, was found to release mediators which stimulate fibroblastproliferation and enhance collagen production. Adherence totissue culture dishes in vitro was found to activate the releaseof these monocyte products, and represents a process which mimicsin vivo extravasation of monocytes from the blood vessel intothe connective tissue. The release of these mediators is dependenton monocyte protein synthesis, metabolism, and protease activity.Little is known of the role that immunologic sensitization toautologous connective tissue components might play in inducing such inflammatory responses which can result in pathologicfibrotic sequelae. In beginning to explore these possibilities,we have found that levels of antibodies to types I (interstitial)and IV (basement membrane) collagen correlate directly withthe extent of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with scleroderma.Furthermore, we can sensitize mice to homologous types I orIV collagen, or laminin (a basement membrane attachment protein),and elicit a delayed type hypersensitivity response which ismarked by mononuclear cell infiltration. Cell-mediated immunityto these antigens can be transferred to normal recipients withsensitized T-lymphocytes. We discuss these data and proposea hypothesis for mechanisms of monocyte extravasation fibroblastactivation fibrosis.  相似文献

1. We tested whether or not the simultaneous hermaphrodite Dugesia polychroa mates randomly with respect to partner size, a strong indicator of female fecundity.
2. The number and duration of copulations were recorded in forty-eight pairs over 5 days. To minimize effects of individual differences in copulatory activity, all animals were each tested twice: once with an equally large partner ( n = 24 equal-sized pairs) and once with a partner of different size (smaller or larger, respectively, ratio 1 : 1.5,
n = 24 unequal-sized pairs).
3. The animals copulated frequently. No significant differences were observed between treatments in the number of pairs that copulated. Mating behaviour of equal-sized and unequal-sized pairs was compared in a pair-wise analysis. Latency to the first copulation and the average number of copulations did not differ when mating with an equal- or unequal-sized partner. Average copulation duration increased with increasing size in equal-sized pairs, but not in unequal-sized pairs.
4. In an additional experiment, where three large and three small animals were combined (three replicates) and observed for 1–3 days, the mating pattern did not differ from random mating by size.
5. Our data indicate that in D. polychroa the decision to mate is essentially random with respect to size. We argue that this is not caused by, for example, high costs of mate searching, but that simultaneous hermaphrodites with reciprocal insemination mate indiscriminately when (i) matings are easy to obtain and (ii) the cost of mating is low or compensated for by sperm digestion.  相似文献

1.  Seasonal dynamics, spatial distribution and population size of the phantom midge Chaoborus flavicans in different parts of the eutrophic Lake Hiidenvesi (30.3 km2) were studied.
2.  Density of larvae was low in the shallow, most eutrophic parts of the lake, while the deep Kiihkelyksenselkä basin was inhabited by a dense population. In the deepest part of Kiihkelyksenselkä (33 m) density was 13 989 ± 3542 m–2 in May, declined to 1102 ± 274 m–2 in July and recovered to 7225 ± 1314 m–2 by October. In spring and autumn the majority of larvae were benthic while, during high summer, few larvae were found in the sediment.
3.  Horizontal distribution fluctuated seasonally. On 3 June < 5% of the population inhabited areas shallower than 10 m. On 6 July the limnetic fraction was still restricted to regions deeper than 10 m, but 43% of benthic larvae were found between 6 and 10 m depths. In October both limnetic and benthic larvae were concentrated in areas deeper than 20 m.
4.  Within the lake, distribution was mainly regulated by stratification characteristics, degree of eutrophy being less important. The seasonal horizontal movements were probably induced by food shortage. Larvae could not meet their energetic demands in stratified areas and dispersed to shallower water, reducing predation risk by use of the benthic habitat.  相似文献
