The uptake and loss of water by roots of young barley plantshave been measured using tracer techniques in sand culture undercontrasting conditions of transpiration and water potentialdifference. The results are compared with direct potometricmeasurements of water uptake. The apparent resistance to flowof water changed in response to differences in water potentialbetween the leaves and the root medium and in transpirationrate. We examine the significance of this in relation to netloss of water and possible mobilization of nutrients from drysoil. With the aid of a mathematical model, some considerationis given to the role of the endodermis as a barrier to diffusivemovement of water in the older parts of the root system.  相似文献

Abstract Feeding responses of the stable fly ( Stomoxys calcitrans L., Diptera: Muscidae) to blood fractions and saline-based diets were studied in an artificial feeding device. Flies fed equally on whole blood, plasma and erythrocyte fractions while resuspended platelets or the buffy layer did not stimulate feeding. Evidence from filtration studies indicates that plasma contains both less-than-5000D and greater-than-100,000D phagostimulatory components. ATP, ADP and AMP in saline stimulate feeding in this insect in a dose-dependent manner. cAMP also stimulates feeding in the range of concentrations tested. It is argued that the less-than-5000D phagostimulant may be one or more of these adenine nucleotides.  相似文献

The cell-doubling times in the shoot apical regions of 4-dayold rice plants have been measured using colchicine-inducedmetaphase accumulation. Plants were grown submerged at a constantillumination of 10 000 lx and constant temperature of 30°C.Colchicine was applied by adding the drug to the surroundingwater which therefore involved no other disturbance of the apexor the plant. The inactivation of various aminoglycosides prior to sterility testing has been studied. The preparation of the enzyme used in the inactivation, a 3-N-acetyl transferase of wide substrate specificity from Escherichia coli JR 225, is described. The enzyme is partially purified and some of its kinetic parameters described. The extent of the inactivation of the individual aminoglycosides can be related to the physiological efficiency of the enzyme. The lyophilization of the components of the inactivating system is successful when undertaken individually, but not together.  相似文献

We analysed 123 white‐tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) from (primarily central) Europe with respect to variability and differentiation based on 499 bp of the mitochondrial control region and genotypes at seven unlinked nuclear microsatellites. Variability was high (overall expected heterozygosity, haplotype and nucleotide diversity being 0.70, 0.764 and 0.00698, respectively) and both marker systems showed a subdivision into two main genetic clusters (microsatellites) or haplogroups (mtDNA). In line with earlier analyses focusing on populations from northern and eastern Europe, as well as from Asia, we found a high level of admixture in Europe and no signs of a bottleneck – despite a severe decline of white‐tailed sea eagle populations during the 20th century. Europe is thus a global stronghold for this species not only with respect to the number of breeding pairs but also regarding the proportion of species‐wide genetic diversity. Our dense sampling revealed a possibly clinal variation within central Europe from north‐west to south‐east that was reflected by the distribution of mtDNA haplotypes as well as the two microsatellite‐based clusters. This population differentiation in central Europe probably originated from a geographically structured postglacial colonization and was later enhanced by recent demographic fluctuations. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 727–737.  相似文献

The possibility of using an embryo test as a means of determining the reaction of wheat varieties to loose smut ( Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr.) has been investigated. Fifty-seven varieties were inoculated with two physiologic races by the partial vacuum method and the embryos, seedlings, and adult plants were examined for infection. Most of the varieties were fully susceptible to one or both races, and only ten showed real resistance to any one race. Braun R and Molinel proved almost immune to infection. The resistance in other varieties which showed no infection in the field was expressed as embryo susceptibility, i.e. the embryo became infected in much the same way as in field-susceptible varieties.
In the latter varieties infection passes from the embryo into the growing point of the young seedling. In the embryo-susceptible field-resistant varieties, infection does not pass from the scutellum and the growing point is therefore uninfected.
The reaction of most of the varieties tested was straightforward resistance or susceptibility, but in a few varieties a small proportion of the grains reacted differently from the majority. These reactions are discussed.  相似文献

Application of 0.5–4.0 per cent sucrose to excised radishcotyledons incubated in the light suppressed the formation ofroots, enhanced the rate of yellowing, and altered the locationof chlorophyll loss from the margin of the lamina to the petiolarregion in most of the cotyledons. These effects were not producedwhen osmotica such as mannitol or polyethylene glycol were used. A few cotyledons were able to root in the presence of sucroseand these showed enhanced yellowing at the margin. The numberof such cotyledons increased when they were incubated in waterfor the period during which primordium initiation begins, beforetransfer to sucrose. However, the pattern of yellowing in thepresence of sucrose was not affected by the repeated removalof the region of primordium development, suggesting that thepattern of senescence is not controlled by the formation ofroot primordia. The results are discussed in relation to the effects of lightand possible accumulation of carbohydrate on senescence androot formation in excised tissues.  相似文献

Abstract: Conservation and management of native species on landscapes managed for intensive wood production represents an ongoing challenge to forest managers. Previous research suggests that impacts of forest practices on stream-associated amphibians (SAA; giant [Dicamptodon spp.], torrent [Rhyacotriton spp.], and plethodontid [Plethodon spp.] salamanders and coastal tailed frogs [Ascaphus truei]) in Oregon and Washington, USA, vary spatially and temporally as a result of biotic and abiotic factors, some of which can be influenced by management treatments. Although individual harvest units can encompass multiple stream reaches and entire second-order basins, nearly all published research studies used stream reaches of various lengths as sample units. To address this discrepancy between research and operational scales, we sampled first-, second-, and third-order streams in 70 randomly selected third-order basins in Oregon and Washington in 2007 and 2008 to estimate detection and occupancy parameters for SAA and to develop basin-level density estimates for different species and genera. We estimated occupancy probabilities of 0.99 (95% CL = 0.96–1.00) for torrent and giant salamanders, 0.93 (95% CL = 0.76–0.92) for Dunn's salamanders (Plethodon dunni), and 0.60 (95% CL = 0.46–0.72) for tailed frogs. Our estimates can be compared with estimates for unmanaged third-order basins in Oregon and Washington to provide a relative measure of potential impacts of forest management on these taxa. In addition, our estimates provide baseline information with which to assess potential effects of future environmental changes on the 4 genera.  相似文献
