In the mid 1970s, the breeding populations of the migrant White Stork Ciconia ciconia were close to extinction in the northeastern region of France (Alsace). A re-introduction project was implemented, resulting in the year-round settlement of some individuals in the region, which rely on additional food supplied by humans during the winter. Today, both resident and migrant birds breed in the same areas and take food from rubbish dumps and humans (farmers). The effects of these anthropogenic influences, altering Stork behaviour, on Stork reproductive success are not known. The aim of this study was to test the influence of bird status (resident vs. migrant) and food availability (control nests vs. nests that benefit from high food supply) on reproductive success. In control nests, the mean laying date was earlier in resident than in migrant White Storks. There was also a clear seasonal decline in clutch size. For all nests, the numbers of eggs and hatchlings were higher in resident birds than in migrants, which can be attributed to the earlier breeding of resident Storks. The large broods of resident birds showed a high mortality rate, leading to the same fledgling success (fledglings/hatchlings) and number of fledglings as in migrants. Fledgling success and the number of fledglings were higher for nests close to a reliable food supply. In summary, although resident birds can breed earlier and produce more eggs than migrants, we found no advantage in terms of number of fledglings. The higher mortality rate of chicks found in pairs with a large brood could be caused by the deterioration of their habitat. Thus, the year-round settlement of Storks may not present a biological advantage if the quality of their habitat is not guaranteed by the conservation of their grasslands.  相似文献

We studied phenology, staging time and refuelling in Broad-billed Sandpipers Limicola falcinellus stopping over during spring migration in the Sivash (Black Sea, Ukraine) in May 1991–94. In the study area, peak staging numbers of 2000–2500 individuals occurred in the third week of May. In May 1993, 460 birds were marked with a yellow dye and 126 of these were colour-ringed. Before 28 May no departure of birds dyed yellow could be detected; by 3 June all birds had departed. Colour-ringed adults in mid May 1993 staged for a minimum of 8.2 days. After the observed departure of large flocks (24 May and later) the staging time of colour-ringed birds decreased significantly with body mass at the time of capture. Of birds mist-netted in 1991–94, 99.3% were in full summer plumage and 89% were adults. In second-year birds, fuel deposition rate (measured between individuals) was 0.44 g/day. In adults caught from early May to 24 May, overall fuel deposition rate was 1.04 g/day (3.4% of lean body mass). Mean adult body mass in early May was 34.8 g, increasing to 45.5 g after 24 May. Estimated body mass at departure was 51 g. Departure body mass and flight range estimates suggest that although birds refuelled quickly, fuel loads are only just sufficient for an unbroken flight to Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. We suggest that Broad-billed Sandpipers use the Sivash as a crucial final take-off stopover site, and that they follow a 'jumping' migration strategy, performed under narrow time constraints.  相似文献

Diurnal variations in acetylene reduction and net hydrogen evolutionwere shown in five tropical and subtropical nitrogen-fixingtree symbioses. The symbioses studied in a growth chamber were:Acacia albida x TAL 1457, Leucaena leucocephala x TAL 1145,Prosopis chilensis x TAL 600, Casuarina glauca x HFP Cc13 andC. obesa x HFP Cc13. Acetylene reduction was highest at the end of the light periodin all symbioses studied. In the A. albida x TAL 1457 symbiosis,the diurnal variations in acetylene reduction and net hydrogenevolution showed a minor synchrony, while in the other symbiosesthe diurnal pattern of acetylene reduction and net hydrogenevolution clearly differed. Also, a diurnal variation in relativeefficiency of nitrogenase was shown in the A. albida x TAL 1457symbiosis. A hydrogen uptake enzyme was detected at a low substrate concentration(24.5 mmol m–3 H2) for L. leucocephala x TAL 1145, C.obesa x HFP Cc13 and has earlier been found for C. glauca xHFP CcI3. A hydrogen uptake system was also found for P. chilensisx TAL 600 and A. albida x TAL 1457 at a 17-fold higher substrateconcentration. The results show that a diurnal variation in C2H2 reductionand H2 evolution occurs, and that diurnal variation in the conversionfactor between C2H2 reduction and N2 fixation could occur. Three methods were used to study N2 fixation and effects ofwater deficit on N2 fixation: C2H2 reduction assay (ARA), 15Ndilution technique and accumulated N content. In addition, 15Ndilution was calculated both in a traditional way and in a modifiedway, which takes into consideration N and 15N content for theplants before the experiment started. The three methods wereapplied on the following Rhizobium-symbioses: Acacia albidaDel (Faidherbia albida (Del) A. Chev.) and Leucaena leucocephala(Lam) de Wit., and the Frankia-symbiosis Casuarina equisetifoliaL. The plants wereabout 4-months-old when they were harvested. Nitrogen derived from N2 fixation in control plants of Acaciaalbida was 54·2 mg as measured with ARA, while it was28·5 mg as measured with the 15N dilution technique,compared to 30·7 mg calculated as accumulated N. In comparison,L. leucocephala fixed 41·6 mg N (ARA), 53·5 mgN(15N dilution technique) and 56·3 mg N (accumulatedN). The Frankia-symbiosis had fixed 27·4 mg N as measuredby ARA, 8·1 mg N as measured by 15N dilution techniqueand 12·3 mg N as accumulated N. There were no differencesbetween the estimates based ontraditional and modified waysof calculating 15N dilution. The immediate effect of water deficit treatment on N2 fixationwas continuously measured inall species with ARA, which startedto decrease approximately 10 d after the initiation of the treatment,and declined to less than 5% of the initial level after 21–28d. The decrease in the amount of N derived from N2 fixation wasstudied in L. leucocephala during the period of treatment. Therewas a 26% decrease in amount of N derived from N2 fixation asresult of water deficit (as measured with ARA), while the decreasewas 23% when measured withboth the 15N dilution method and asaccumulated N. The three different methods for measuring N2 fixation and effectsof water deficit on N2 fixation are discussed. VITAMIN K maintains normal plasma prothrombin concentration. The effects of this vitamin as well as of its antagonist, dicoumarol, have been studied, often with the aid of inhibitors of protein synthesis, such as puromycin and cycloheximide1–8. It is generally accepted that the site of action of vitamin K is not at the DNA level but at the late ribosomal stage; whether the vitamin acts in the de novo synthesis of prothrombin or in the completion of “unfinished” molecules is uncertain. Dicoumarol may cause release of unfinished material, or of “modified” molecules which are converted to the normal form by vitamin K. Conflicting evidence may be due to differences in dosage of protein inhibitors or of dicoumarol, differences in sampling time, differences in degree of purification, species variation, or differences in physical characteristics and chemical behaviour of unfinished or modified molecules which would demand that methods be specially adapted for their isolation.  相似文献

Developmental morphology of two natural populations of Ceratophyllum inhabiting the waters of Delhi has been investigated under natural conditions and in aseptic culture. Both the populations show an extreme degree of adaptability to hydrophily. The embryo is unusually highly developed and contains 12–14 whorls of leaves and a few lateral buds. The two populations differ significantly in colour and dichotomy of leaf; structure and position of male flowers; number, position and colour of horns on the fruit; stylar length and distribution of sexes. The latter two parameters are probably responsible for the reproductive isolation of the populations, despite their sympatric association. On account of these differences, the two populations are assigned to two distinct species C. demersum L. and C. echinatum Gray, respectively and their taxonomy is discussed; C. echinatum is a New World species not previously recorded from India.  相似文献

A survey of fluvial landforms was conducted at Widden Brook, an unregulated sand‐bed stream in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, to investigate the physical factors associated with vegetation pattern in Riverine Oak Forest. Groundwater depth and chemistry (pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity) were measured using piezometers and submersible data loggers on three fluvial landforms (i.e. toe of bank, top of bank and floodplain) along five transects. Floristic composition, canopy cover, bare ground and leaf litter were assessed within 45 quadrats on the three landforms along the five transects. Elevation above the bed and flood return period were determined by cross‐sectional survey and flood frequency analysis, while flow duration was determined from the gauge record. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that vegetation composition was associated with average watertable depth and flood variables to a similar extent. The relative importance of these factors would be expected to vary with flood‐ and drought‐dominated climatic periods on a scale of several decades. Floristic composition was moderately associated with the canopy cover of the dominant woody species, Casuarina cunninghamiana (Miq.), but weakly correlated with bare ground and groundwater chemistry. Suites of species were associated with particular fluvial landforms and their corresponding flood and watertable conditions. The reach examined has characteristics similar to both the semi‐arid and mesic riparian ecosystems of the USA. The coarse sediments, high flood variability, short flood duration and dominance by a pioneer tree that relies on groundwater are similar to riparian ecosystems in the western USA, while the relatively broad floodplain and the development of a forest canopy that is associated with the distribution of understorey plants are similar to the mesic riparian systems in the eastern USA.  相似文献

The agglutinating effects of Concanavalin A (Con A) on protoplasts isolated from cell suspensions of Daucus carota were studied. Con A was shown to agglutinate the plant protoplasts in a manner similar to the way some animal cells are agglutinated. The agglutination process is dependent on the Concanavalin A concentration, protoplast density, treatment time, the temperature, and the membrane condition, α-D-Methylgluco-pyranosid completely inhibited Con A induced agglutination. The results are discussed in relation to membrane structure and morphology.  相似文献

Protoplasts, enzymatically isolated from cell suspension cultures of Daucus carota, have been grown in small Petri-dishes. After enzyme treatment and washing the protoplasts were plated in agar media. Growth and divisions were viewed through the bottom of the Petri-dishes with a light microscope. Different osmotic stabilizers were tested with respect to their ability to promote wall formation and growth of the protoplasts. Combinations of sucrose, sorbitol and “Modopeg” gave the best results. Electron micrographs of cultured protoplasts revealed normal as well as abnormal nuclear conditions.  相似文献
