This study analysed the taxonomic utility of selected features of pollen grains of 45 Central European species of subgenera Vignea and Carex of the genus Carex. Seven quantitative features were analysed: [length of polar axis (P), length of equatorial axis (E), exine thickness on the pole (Exp), exine thickness on the equator plane (Exe), P/E ratio and the relative thickness of exine (Exp/P and Exe/E ratio)] and outline, shape and exine sculpture. Among the biometrical features, the most important for Carex taxonomy (particularly at the level of subgenus) is the thickness of exine (Exp). Marked differences in the morphological structure of inflorescences at the subgenus level are reflected in the differences of pollen features. Results of our studies clearly show an explicit (and not previously described in the palynological literature) taxonomic division of the genus Carex on the basis of pollen biometrical features into two units corresponding exactly to the subgenera (Vignea and Carex). However, the features of pollen grains analysed did not contribute any essential taxonomic criteria at levels lower than subgenus (e.g. sections). An exception was for C. disticha, where it was observed that the poroid areas occurred in pairs, a new feature for sedges. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 422–439. 相似文献

Abstract: A partial quadrate (essentially the otic part) from the nonmarine, earliest Eocene (54.6 Ma) Tingamarra Local Fauna in Queensland, Australia, has been identified as the oldest Australian anseriform fossil. The Tingamarra quadrate shows a combination of plesiomorphic anseriform characters with a unique synapomorphic character complex of the Anhimidae (screamers), which today are endemic to South America. In concert with the basal position of the Anhimidae among the crown‐group anseriforms, this set of characters suggests a stem group of the Anhimidae, raising a possibility of the Transantarctic migration of stem anhimids to South America. The quadrate morphology supports palaeognathous rather than recently claimed anhimid relationships of the Dromornithidae and identifies Sylviornis as an anseriform rather than a galliform. 相似文献

Eleven needle traits of two contrasting populations of Pinus uliginosa ( P. mugo complex), one located in a Pinus sylvestris forest, the other isolated from the influence of this species, were compared to quantify the degree of hybridization. Statistically significant differences between the studied populations were found, but both of them differed by a similar degree from P. sylvestris . Surprisingly, the P. uliginosa population surrounded by the P. sylvestris forest, which was expected to consist of individuals with intermediate traits, appeared to be more closely related to P. mugo than those isolated from the direct influence of P. sylvestris . Large differences in the distances between the analysed pair of populations of P. uliginosa and P. sylvestris have not influenced the morphological traits of the species. Gene flow from P. sylvestris to P. uliginosa is possible, but is likely to be small and does not differ compared with populations of P. uliginosa . The decline observed during the last three decades in both populations of the species has not influenced their needle morphological traits. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London , Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 142, 83–91. 相似文献

Effect of Monovalent Thallium Ions on Differentiation and Multiplication of Acanthamoeba castellanii
ANDRZEJ SOBOTA 《Differentiation; research in biological diversity》1979,12(1-3):187-190
The vegetatively multiplying Acanthamoeba castellanii cells are transformed into cysts under unfavourable feeding conditions. The cyst formation may also be induced by treatment of the cells with DNA-synthesis inhibitors or by placing the cells into special ionic medium containing magnesium and calcium at pH 9, with aeration. During Acanthamoeba encystment the morphology of the cells changes significantly, namely a cellulose-protein cyst wall appears which is easily seen under the light and electron microscope. The process of encystment in Acanthamoeba castellanii is considered as a useful simple model of cytodifferentiation of eukaryotic cells.
This communication describes the effects of monovalent thallium ions on the differentiation and multiplication of Acanthamoeba cells growing in optimal feeding conditions. Thallium ions being potassium analogues are readily accumulated by cells. On the other hand, thallium ions, unlike potassium ions, are able to form complexes with some anions, which results in disturbances of some cellular functions.
Thallium ions, added to the growth medium of 2–3-days old Acanthamoeba culture at a concentration of 0.05–1.0 mM inhibit the population growth inducing the differentiation of cells into cysts. The increase of the thallium ion concentration up to 5 or 10 mM in the growth medium causes the very fast multiplication of Acanthamoeba cells. However, at these thallium ion concentrations no cysts can be observed.
Thus, on the basis of the experimental data it seems likely that thallium ions play some role in increasing the rate of multiplication and in switching on the differentiation process (encystment) in Acanthamoeba cells. 相似文献

The taphonomy of three Middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) monospecific ophiuroid taphocoenoses, comprising Aspiduriella similis (Eck), from different regions in Poland (Holy Cross Mountains, Upper Silesia and North-Sudetic Basin) has been investigated. The majority of specimens (88.5% of a total of 428 individuals) are partially disarticulated, having only proximal and median portions of their arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 2). Pristine specimens, with only faint traces of disarticulation (Taphonomic Group 1), as well as those that preserve the disc only, or which have only proximal stumps of arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 3), are much rarer (6.5% and 5%, respectively). Moreover, most specimens (76.4%) are oral side up. Only 19.2% of specimens are preserved in life position, and a small fraction (4.4%) are preserved oblique to bedding. All ophiuroids studied occur in thin, pelitic layers devoid of any trace fossils. Associated body fossils, such as bivalves, gastropods or crinoids, are very rare. Taking into account ophiuroid taphonomy, as well as sedimentological characteristics of the thin layer (burial layer), it is clear that all assemblages were transported prior to burial. The predominance of articulated skeletons indicates that the burial event (obrution event) was not only rapid, but also single – subsequent events would have destroyed the previously buried ophiuroids. Storm-related resuspension of fine-grained material from nearshore environments which covered the ophiuroids is the most likely burial agent. The fact that in all regions the ophiuroid taphofacies studied is identical suggests that the three assemblages underwent the same burial history, and that a single event might have been responsible. Abstract: We describe Muhuarina haeretica gen. et sp. nov. from a recently discovered silicified brachiopod fauna from the Lower Carboniferous of South China. This new microproductid appears to be the oldest representative of the highly differentiated, mainly Permian, aulostegoid family Cooperinidae. The internal structure of the dorsal valve of M. haeretica is dominated by strongly developed, pronounced subperipheral ridges, which suggest support for a simple schizolophe type of lophophore. Brachial ridges, as in other productides, most probably represent an attachment area of the lophophore to the dorsal epithelium. An attempt to homologize subperipheral and brachial ridges among Cooperinidae is presented. 相似文献

Introduced species must adapt their ecology, behaviour, and morphological traits to new conditions. The successful introduction and invasive potential of a species are related to its levels of phenotypic plasticity and genetic polymorphism. We analysed changes in the body mass and length of American mink (Neovison vison) since its introduction into the Warta Mouth National Park, western Poland, in relation to diet composition and colonization progress from 1996 to 2004. Mink body mass decreased significantly during the period of population establishment within the study area, with an average decrease of 13% from 1.36 to 1.18 kg in males and of 16% from 0.83 to 0.70 kg in females. Diet composition varied seasonally and between consecutive years. The main prey items were mammals and fish in the cold season and birds and fish in the warm season. During the study period the proportion of mammals preyed upon increased in the cold season and decreased in the warm season. The proportion of birds preyed upon decreased over the study period, whereas the proportion of fish increased. Following introduction, the strictly aquatic portion of mink diet (fish and frogs) increased over time, whereas the proportion of large prey (large birds, muskrats, and water voles) decreased. The average yearly proportion of large prey and average‐sized prey in the mink diet was significantly correlated with the mean body masses of males and females. Biogeographical variation in the body mass and length of mink was best explained by the percentage of large prey in the mink diet in both sexes, and by latitude for females. Together these results demonstrate that American mink rapidly changed their body mass in relation to local conditions. This phenotypic variability may be underpinned by phenotypic plasticity and/or by adaptation of quantitative genetic variation. The potential to rapidly change phenotypic variation in this manner is an important factor determining the negative ecological impacts of invasive species. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 681–693. 相似文献

Melanogenesis refers to the biosynthesis of melanin pigment in pigment cells called melanocytes. Melanins are mixed biopolymers formed during a series of oxidation/reduction reactions that are initiated by the enzymatic hydroxylation of L-tyrosine to L-dopa. In living cells, melanogenesis is limited to melanosomes, the membrane bounded microscopic secretory granules of melanocytes. Melanosomes may be secreted into the environment as, for example, from the squid's ink gland; or be transferred to neighboring cells, such as the keratinocytes in human skin and hair; or they may remain within the pigment cell and change only their subcellular localization, as in the rapidly color-changing dermis of lower vertebrates. Regulation of the melanocytic phenotype involves synthesis of the biosynthetically active subcellular apparatus of melanogenesis, premelanosomes and tyrosinase, and the utilization of the final product, melanized melanosomes, in the translocation and secretory processes mentioned above. Genetic information for this regulation is stored in the nuclear genome whose expression is controlled by the intra- and extracellular environment. As premelanosomes become biosynthetically active, they mature into melanosomes by fusing with vesicles derived from the trans-Golgi network and the plasmalemma, thereby internalizing and incorporating contents and membrane components from inside the cell and the cell surface. In the process, melanosomes become acidified. The thesis pursued in this review explores the importance of the melanosome as the final common pathway of regulation of melanin biosynthesis. 相似文献
