ABSTRACT The decline of many snake populations is attributable to habitat loss, and knowledge of habitat use is critical to their conservation. Resource characteristics (e.g., relative availability of different habitat types, soils, and slopes) within a landscape are scale-dependent and may not be equal across multiple spatial scales. Thus, it is important to identify the relevant spatial scales at which resource selection occurs. We conducted a radiotelemetry study of eastern hognose snake (Heterodon platirhinos) home range size and resource use at different hierarchical spatial scales. We present the results for 8 snakes radiotracked during a 2-year study at New Boston Air Force Station (NBAFS) in southern New Hampshire, USA, where the species is listed by the state as endangered. Mean home range size (minimum convex polygon) at NBAFS (51.7 ± 14.7 ha) was similar to that reported in other parts of the species’ range. Radiotracked snakes exhibited different patterns of resource use at different spatial scales. At the landscape scale (selection of locations within the landscape), snakes overutilized old-field and forest edge habitats and underutilized forested habitats and wetlands relative to availability. At this scale, snakes also overutilized areas containing sandy loam soils and areas with lower slope (mean slope = 5.2% at snake locations vs. 6.7% at random locations). We failed to detect some of these patterns of resource use at the home range scale (i.e., within the home range). Our ability to detect resource selection by the snakes only at the landscape scale is likely the result of greater heterogeneity in macrohabitat features at the broader landscape scale. From a management perspective, future studies of habitat selection for rare species should include measurement of available habitat at spatial scales larger than the home range. We suggest that the maintenance of open early successional habitats as a component of forested landscapes will be critical for the persistence of eastern hognose snake populations in the northeastern United States.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Pneumocystis carinii are coated by abundant heterogenous major surface glycoproteins (MSGs), which facilitate interaction with the host. We have produced MSG-specific T-cell clones from the spleens of P. carinii -exposed Lewis rats and analyzed five for antigen specificity to native MSG and a recombinant form of MSG, cell surface markers, and cytokine profiles. All five of the clones were CD4+. All of the clones proliferated specifically to both the native MSG and the recombinant MSG only in the presence of antigen presenting cells demonstrating that the response is antigen/driven rather than mitogen/driven. All five of the clones secreted IL-2 and IFN-γ, although in differing amounts, implicating a Th l response. Only one of the clones produced any detectable IL-4. This is the first report of T cell clones responsive to a specific antigen of P. carinii , MSG. We conclude that the T cell clones will be helpful in mapping protective epitopes present in MSG and in functional studies of MSG.  相似文献

Incubation temperature determines sex in the mugger crocodile,Crocodylus palustris. Exclusively females are produced at constanttemperatures of 28.0°C through 31°C. At 32.5°C,only males are produced. Both sexes are produced in varyingproportions at 31.5, 32.0, and 33.0°C. Embryo survival isnot affected within this range, but developmental rate and totalincubation time are strongly temperature dependent. In naturalnests laid in breeding enclosures, cool incubation temperaturesproduced only females whereas males were produced only in warmnests. Clutch sex ratios were female or male biased. Yearlysex ratios (=percent male) varied from 0.05 to 0.58; overallsex ratio during six nesting seasons was 0.24 (1 male: 3 females).Sex ratio and incubation time vary with nest location and temperaturein a manner consistent with the constant temperature results.Incubation time decreases with increasing incubation temperature, and is an accurate predictor of sex ratio in the field and laboratory. To date, temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) has beenreported in five species of Crocodylus and in three speciesof Alligatorinae; but the TSD patterns in these groups differ. The TSD pattern of C. palustris is similar to that of C. porosus.Nesting in C. palustris is synchronized with the seasonal availabilityof thermal regimes suitable for incubation. Resultant sex ratiosare a consequence of when and where eggs are laid. Early nestsare located in warm, sunny sites; in contrast, late season nestsare located in the shade. An egg transplant experiment demonstratedthat sex ratios could be altered by simple manipulations ofnest temperatures in the field. The adaptive significance ofTSD in crocodilians may relate to the influence of incubationtemperature on various hatchling attributes, particularly growth.  相似文献

Abstract The partitioning of nitrate assimilation between root and shoot of higher plant species is indicated by the relative proportions of total plant nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in the two plant parts and the relative concentrations of nitrate and reduced N in the xylem sap. These have been collated here from the literature and temperate and tropical species compared. Both the distribution of NRA and xylem sap nitrate: reduced N indicate that the following four generalizations can be made.
  • 1 Temperate, perennial species growing in low external nitrate concentrations (about 1 mol m?3) carry out most of their nitrate assimilation in the root. As external nitrate concentration increases (in the range found in agricultural soils, 1–20 mol m?3), shoot nitrate assimilation becomes increasingly important.
  • 2 Temperate, annual legume species growing in low external nitrate concentrations carry out most of their nitrate assimilation in the root. Shoot nitrate assimilation increases in importance as external nitrate concentration is increased.
  • 3 Temperate, annual non-legume species vary greatly in their partitioning of nitrate assimilation between root and shoot when growing in low external nitrate concentrations. Regardless of the proportion carried out in the root at low external nitrate concentrations, nitrate assimilation in the shoot becomes increasingly important as external nitrate concentration is increased.
  • 4 Tropical and subtropical species, annual and perennial, carry out a substantial proportion of their nitrate assimilation in the shoot when growing in low external nitrate concentrations. The partitioning of nitrate assimilation between root and shoot remains constant as external nitrate concentration increases.
It is proposed that a greater proportion of nitrate assimilation occurs in the shoot when an increase in the rate of nitrate uptake does not induce an increase in NR level in the root. Thus, a greater proportion of the nitrate taken up remains unassimilated and is passed into the xylem. A constant partitioning of nitrate assimilation between root and shoot is achieved by balancing NR levels in the root with rates of nitrate uptake. The advantages and disadvantages of assimilating nitrate in either the root or shoot are discussed in relation to temperate and tropical habitats.  相似文献

Forty-eight F4 families of a cross between two cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris were grown in ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ environments in the field. The F2 and F3 generations had been assessed for cold tolerance using the test described by Hardwick & Andrews (1980). The mean seed yields of the F4's were 333 and 167 g m-2 in the ‘warm’ environment (blackened soil surface, clear polyethylene mulch, windbreaks) and ‘cool’ environment (whitened soil surface, no mulch or windbreaks) respectively. The ratio of yields in the two environments was larger in families selected for cold sensitivity than in those selected for cold tolerance (values of ratio 2.28 to 1 and 1.76 to 1 respectively). The ‘warm’ treatment decreased the number of days between sowing and emergence from 15.6 to 8.6, increased the estimated weight per seedling axis at emergence from 544 to 904 mg/plant, and increased the weight/plant at flowering from 3.75 to 4.7 g. Plants from the ‘warm’ treatment had bigger leaf weights, smaller stem weights, more branches and bigger specific leaf areas than plants of the same weight from the ‘cool’ treatment. Differences in yield were due mainly to differences in the number of seeds produced/plant. Eleven F, families were grown in a simple yield trial the following year. The season was cooler and yields were reduced. The reduction in yield was greater in the cold sensitive than in the cold tolerant families.  相似文献

The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf.
