The mainland portion of the Adelaide Geosyncline (Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges) has been postulated as an important arid‐zone climate refugium for Australia. To test the sensitivity of this putative Australian arid biome refugium to contemporary climate change, we compared Generalized Additive Modelling and MaxEnt distribution models for 20 vascular plant species. We aimed to identify shared patterns to inform priority areas for management. Models based on current climate were projected onto a hypothetical 2050 climate with a 1.5°C increase in temperature and 8% decrease in rainfall. Individual comparisons and combined outputs of logistic models for all 20 species showed range contraction to shared refugia in the Flinders Ranges and southern Mount Lofty Ranges. Modelling suggests the Flinders Ranges will experience species turnover while suitable climatic habitat will be retained in the Mount Lofty Ranges for the current suite of species. Fragmentation of the southern Mount Lofty Ranges poses management challenges for conserving species diversity with warming and drying. Although projected models must be interpreted carefully, they suggest the region will remain an important but threatened refugium for mesic species at a continental scale. 相似文献

We investigated the climate response of three Siberian taiga species, Larix cajanderi, Picea obovata, and Pinus sylvestris, across a latitudinal gradient in central Siberia. We hypothesized that warming is more frequently associated with increased growth for evergreen conifers (P. obovata and P. sylvestris) than for L. cajanderi, and for northern than for southern sites; we also hypothesized that increased growth is associated with a positive trend in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). In mixed stands, growth of L. cajanderi and P. obovata increased over time, but the larger growth increases in P. obovata may presage a shift in competitive balance between these species. Climate response varied among and within populations of all species, and positive responses to temperature prevailed at northern sites, where trees grew faster in years with warm early summers. Negative responses to warming declined along the south to north latitudinal gradient. We observed considerable variability in climate response within populations which even exceeded that among species or sites. Tree response to climate was correlated with NDVI trends, indicating that patterns of tree‐growth response to climate were indicative of a coherent landscape‐scale response to warming. Our findings suggest that increased productivity with warming is likely only in the northern reaches of the Siberian taiga. An increased prevalence of evergreen conifers in areas currently dominated by deciduous Larix species also seems likely. 相似文献

Previously undescribed specimens of the aquatic microsaur Microbrachis pelikani Fritsch from the Upper Carboniferous of Nýřany, Czech Republic, demonstrate the presence of a deep-swimming-adapted tail supported by up to 46 postsacral vertebrae. The tail appears to have lengthened with ontogeny. Most microsaurs appear to have been terrestrial and because the group has been perceived to be related to the amniotes, all (including Microbrachis ) had been reconstructed with slender tapering tails. Microbrachis appears to be an early offshoot of the microsaurs and it is unclear whether the deep tail is a primitive retention or an acquired characteristic of the genus. 相似文献

The most common explanation for species diversity increasing towards the tropics is the corresponding increase in habitats (spatial heterogeneity). Consequently, a monoculture (like cotton in Australia) which is grown along a latitudinal gradient, should have the same degree of species diversity throughout its range. We tested to see if diversity in a dominant cotton community (spiders) changed with latitude, and if the community was structurally identical in different parts of Australia. We sampled seven sites extending over 20° of latitude. At each site we sampled 1–3 fields 3–5 times during the cotton growing season using pitfall traps and beatsheets, recording all the spiders collected to family. We found that spider communities in cotton are diverse, including a large range of foraging guilds, making them suitable for a conservation biological control programme. We also found that spider diversity increased from high to low latitudes, and the communities were different, even though the spiders were in the same monocultural habitat. Spider beatsheet communities around Australia were dominated by different families, and responded differently to seasonal changes, indicating that different pest groups would be targeted at different locations. These results show that diversity can increase from high to low latitudes, even if spatial heterogeneity is held constant, and that other factors external to the cotton crop are influencing spider species composition. ABSTRACT We have measured binding of fluorescein-conjugated succinyl-concanavalin A (Fl-s-Con A) to bloodstream and procyclic forms of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and to bloodstream forms of T. b. rhodesiense by flow cytofluorimetry. Bloodstream forms bound an order of magnitude less lectin than procyclic forms. Trypsin-treating cells enhanced binding of Fl-s-Con A to bloodstream forms 3–16-fold depending on the strain and the length of trypsinization but had little effect on Fl-s-Con A binding by procyclics. The trypsinization protocol used did not remove major common glycoproteins detected on lectin blots of either life cycle form but removed >95% of the variant specific glycoprotein and fragments derived from this protein of bloodstream forms. Microscopically detectable Fl-s-Con A binding to bloodstream forms was confined to the flagellar pocket. Trypsinized bloodstream forms and procyclics bound Fl-s-Con A in the flagellar pocket, on the flagellum, and on the cell surface. Lectin remained cell associated but appeared to redistribute towards the flagellum and pocket when cells that had bound lectin on ice were subsequently incubated at physiological temperatures. The Fl-s-Con A binding had specificity characteristic of the interaction between the lectin and oligosaccharides. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the variant specific surface glycoprotein blocks binding of the lectin to surface glycoproteins of bloodstream forms and suggest that concanavalin A-binding glycoproteins are abundant in the flagellar pocket of both life cycle forms. 相似文献
