Estimates of carbon leaching losses from different land use systems are few and their contribution to the net ecosystem carbon balance is uncertain. We investigated leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and dissolved methane (CH4), at forests, grasslands, and croplands across Europe. Biogenic contributions to DIC were estimated by means of its δ13C signature. Leaching of biogenic DIC was 8.3±4.9 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 24.1±7.2 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 14.6±4.8 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. DOC leaching equalled 3.5±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 5.3±2.0 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 4.1±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. The average flux of total biogenic carbon across land use systems was 19.4±4.0 g C m?2 yr?1. Production of DOC in topsoils was positively related to their C/N ratio and DOC retention in subsoils was inversely related to the ratio of organic carbon to iron plus aluminium (hydr)oxides. Partial pressures of CO2 in soil air and soil pH determined DIC concentrations and fluxes, but soil solutions were often supersaturated with DIC relative to soil air CO2. Leaching losses of biogenic carbon (DOC plus biogenic DIC) from grasslands equalled 5–98% (median: 22%) of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) plus carbon inputs with fertilization minus carbon removal with harvest. Carbon leaching increased the net losses from cropland soils by 24–105% (median: 25%). For the majority of forest sites, leaching hardly affected actual net ecosystem carbon balances because of the small solubility of CO2 in acidic forest soil solutions and large NEE. Leaching of CH4 proved to be insignificant compared with other fluxes of carbon. Overall, our results show that leaching losses are particularly important for the carbon balance of agricultural systems.  相似文献

The occurrence of chloroplast protrusions (CPs) in leaves of Ranunculus glacialis L. in response to different environmental conditions was assessed. CPs occur highly dynamically. They do not contain thylakoids and their physiological function is still largely unknown. Controlled in situ sampling showed that CP formation follows a pronounced diurnal rhythm. Between 2 and 27 °C the relative proportion of chloroplasts with CPs (rCP) showed a significant positive correlation to leaf temperature (TL; 0.793, P < 0.01), while irradiation intensity had a minor effect on rCP. In situ shading and controlled laboratory experiments confirmed the significant influence of TL. Under moderate irradiation intensity, an increase of TL up to 25 °C significantly promoted CP formation, while a further increase to 37 °C led to a decrease. Furthermore, rCP values were lower in darkness and under high irradiation intensity. Gas treatment at 2000 ppm CO2/2% O2 led to a significant decrease of rCP, suggesting a possible involvement of photorespiration in CP formation. Our findings demonstrate that in R. glacialis, CPs are neither a rare phenomenon nor a result of heat or light stress; on the contrary, they seem to be most abundant under moderate temperature and non‐stress irradiation conditions.  相似文献

The effects of the recent warming trend in many northern temperate lakes on the species composition of spring phytoplankton remain poorly understood, especially because a recent change in nutrients has complicated efforts, and previous studies have defined spring according to the calendar. We analysed data from 1979 to 2004 from Lake Müggelsee (Berlin, Germany), using physical and biological parameters to define the spring period. We show that a change in timing of spring plankton events in warm years led to the paradox of lower mean water temperatures during the growth period, favouring cold-adapted diatoms over cyanobacteria, and within the diatoms, some cold-adapted centric forms over pennate forms. Under high P : Si ratios, the increased time between phytoplankton and cladoceran peaks opened a loophole for filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoriales) in warm years to establish dominance after the diatoms, which are silicate limited. Therefore, the warming trend promotes filamentous cyanobacteria, a well-known nuisance in eutrophic lakes, and surprisingly, cold-adapted diatoms.  相似文献

1. Little is known about the predators of insect eggs in fresh waters. This study describes aspects of the life history of a scathophagid fly (Acanthocnema sp.), whose larvae are predators of aquatic insect eggs. 2. Because the Acanthocnema predator oviposits its eggs on the surface of aquatic insect egg masses, all insect egg masses were collected regularly within a 200‐m reach of Redwood Creek (California, U.S.A.) between September 2003 and June 2007. Acanthocnema predators were found predominantly within egg masses of the caddifly Neophylax rickeri (Trichoptera: Uenoidae). 3. There was a mean of 0.25 Acanthocnema individuals per N. rickeri egg mass (n = 2367 egg masses). In general, N. rickeri egg masses were more commonly found clustered in aggregations (93.7%) than singly (6.3%), and Acanthonema were found more often within the aggregations of N. rickeri (98.7%) compared to singly laid egg masses (1.3%). 4. The duration of the Acanthocnema predator life stages was: egg 2.9 ± 0.8 (mean ± SD) days, larva 15.6 ± 10.2 days, pupa 80.3 ± 24.9 days and adult 7.2 ± 4.8 days. The short duration of the Acanthocnema egg stage (1–7 days) compared to that of its prey N. rickeri (2–4 weeks) raises the probability that the undeveloped eggs of N. rickeri would be available to the young predators upon hatching. Egg consumption of N. rickeri eggs by Acanthocnema averaged 262.6 eggs per larval period. 5. Acanthocnema had a bivoltine life cycle in which the first generation fed exclusively on N. rickeri egg masses in the winter and the second generation fed on the egg masses of several species, including other Trichoptera (Brachycentridae) and Diptera (Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae) in the spring. These findings suggest differing feeding strategies by the first and second generations of Acanthocnema in response to the seasonal availability of prey species. This type of autecological information is important for understanding mechanisms of community interactions.  相似文献

Seedlings of Ricinus communis L. cultivated in quartz sand weresupplied with a nutrient solution containing either 1 mol m–3NO3 or 1 mol m–3 NH+4 as the nitrogen source. Duringthe period between 41 and 51 d after sowing, the flows of N,C and inorganic ions between root and shoot were modelled andexpressed on a fresh weight basis. Plant growth was clearlyinhibited in the presence of NH+4. In the xylem sap the majornitrogenous solutes were nitrate (74%) or glutamine (78%) innitrate or ammonium-fed plants, respectively. The pattern ofamino acids was not markedly influenced by nitrogen nutrition;glutamine was the dominant compound in both cases. NH+4 wasnot transported in significant amounts in both treatments. Inthe phloem, nitrogen was transported almost exclusively in organicform, glutamine being the dominant nitrogenous solute, but theN-source affected the amino acids transported. Uptake of nitrogenand carbon per unit fresh weight was only slightly decreasedby ammonium. The partitioning of nitrogen was independent ofthe form of N-nutrition, although the flow of nitrogen and carbonin the phloem was enhanced in ammonium-fed plants. Cation uptakerates were halved in the presence of ammonium and lower quantitiesof K+, Na+ and Ca2+ but not of Mg2+ were transported to theshoot. As NH+4 was balanced by a 30-fold increase in chloride in thesolution, chloride uptake was increased 6-fold under ammoniumnutrition. We concluded that ammonium was predominantly assimilated inthe root. Nitrate reduction and assimilation occurred in bothshoot and root. The assimilation of ammonium in roots of ammonium-fedplants was associated with a higher respiration rate. The structural details visible under the light microscope have made polytene chromosomes from Diptera much used in studies of the taxonomy, evolution and genetics of important biological models such as Drosophila and Chironomus, and the medical entomology of important disease vectors such as blackflies and mosquitoes. This paper describes the isolation of sections of polytene chromosomes from preserved wild‐caught blackflies using off‐the‐shelf laser microdissection microscopy and subsequent analysis of the DNA using polymerase chain reaction. This allows a direct link between the visible structure of the genome and the unknown DNA sequence, facilitating the development of molecular markers for population cytogenetics and cytotaxonomy.  相似文献

Abstract.  The phylogenetic relationships of members of the long-tongued bee tribe Anthophorini were investigated. Twenty-six ingroup taxa, representing all known genera and the most common subgenera of the Anthophorini, were included in a cladistic analysis of the tribe based on 51 morphological characters. The analysis yielded the generic relationships: (( Habrophorula , Elaphropoda ) ( Habropoda ( Deltoptila ( Pachymelus ( Amegilla , Anthophora ))))). The monophyly of the Anthophorini and each of its genera was confirmed. A second tribe, Habropodini, as postulated by some authors, is paraphyletic. On the basis of the results of the cladistic analysis and the biogeographical data of Anthophorini, an evolutionary scenario is postulated in which all genera of Anthophorini probably evolved in the Late Cretaceous, except Amegilla and Anthophora , which originated in the Oligocene. The northern part of south-east Asia (India to south-east China) is regarded as the most probable place of origin and radiation of the Anthophorini. The New World was probably colonized three times independently by Habropoda (upper Cretaceous to Tertiary), by an ancestral lineage of Deltoptila (upper Cretaceous to Tertiary) and by Anthophora (Tertiary to Quaternary).  相似文献
