Studies of avian brood parasite systems have typically investigated the mimicry of host eggs by specialist parasites. Yet, several examples of similarity between host and parasite chick appearance or begging calls suggest that the escalation of host–parasite arms races may also lead to visual or vocal mimicry at the nestling stage. Despite this, there have been no large-scale comparative studies of begging calls to test whether the similarity of host and parasite is greater than predicted by chance or phylogenetic distance within a geographically distinct species assemblage. Using a survey of the begging calls of all native forest passerines in New Zealand, we show that the begging call of the host-specialist shining cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx lucidus ) is most similar to that of its grey warbler ( Gerygone igata ) host compared to any of the other species, and that this is unlikely to have occurred by chance. Randomization tests revealed that the incorporation of the shining cuckoo's begging calls into our species-set consistently reduced the phylogenetic signal within cluster trees based on begging call similarity. By contrast, the removal of the grey warbler calls did not reduce the phylogenetic signal in the begging call similarity trees. These two results support a scenario in which coevolution of begging calls has not taken place: the begging call of the host retains its phylogenetic signal, whereas that of the parasite has changed to match that of its host.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 208–216.  相似文献

The involvement of the microtubule (MT) and actin microfilament (MF) cytoskeletons in establishing nuclear positions during zoosporogenesis in Allomyces macrogynus was assessed using selective cytoskeletal disrupting treatments and documented with light microscopy. These experiments were coupled with low-speed centrifugation studies to determine the degree to which cytoskeletal elements anchor nuclear position. At the onset of zoospore formation, nuclei were positioned only in cortical cytoplasmic regions of the zoosporangia (ZS). Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed that MTs primarily emanated from centrosomal regions into the surrounding cytoplasm at this stage. During delimitation of the cytoplasm into individual uninucleate zoospores, nuclei migrated from cortical regions to become distributed throughout the cytoplasm. Coincident with nuclear migrations, MTs were primarily organized at and emanated from nuclear surfaces, forming extensive perinuclear arrays. Nuclear migrations were suppressed in ZS induced to sporulate in the presence of cytochalasin D, an actin MF inhibiting compound. Disruption of MTs with nocodazole did not block nuclear migrations, although resultant nuclear spacing was irregular. Centrifugation treatments of control and drug-treated ZS demonstrated that nuclear positions were stabilized by perinuclear MT arrays. The results indicate that nuclear motility in ZS of A. macrogynus is the result of an actin-based system while perinuclear MTs arrays function to establish and fix nuclear position during zoospore formation. In this retrospective review we assessed the frequency with which atypical glandular cells in cervical smears predict cervical glandular lesions. Asymptomatic patients ( n =34) with one or more smears showing atypical glandular cells and subsequent histopathological assessment were studied. Independent cytological and histological review was undertaken. Cytological review confirmed atypical glandular cells in 29 cases, 17 of which had coexisting squamous dyskaryosis. Histological review of these 29 cases revealed glandular neoplasia in 13 (45%) and microglandular hyperplasia (MEH) in an additional four (14%). Initial reporting had underestimated the prevalence of glandular neoplasia.  相似文献

1. The addition of heparin to rat liver, kidney, or brain nuclei has been found to bring about the release of a gel. Chemical analysis and histochemical studies on whole homogenates and isolated nuclei demonstrated that the material released by heparin contained desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and protein. The action of heparin on nuclei is interpreted as the result of a combination with the basic proteins of the nucleus with a consequent displacement of DNA. 2. The addition of heparin to a finely divided dilute liver homogenate prepared in a phosphate-sucrose solution at pH 7.1 brings about a marked increase in viscosity which reaches a maximum in 6 to 8 minutes at 23° and then declines. 3. The concentration threshold for the viscosity effect was 0.1 mg. per 100 mg. fresh rat liver, with further increases in viscosity at higher heparin concentrations. Over a period of several hours a marked decrease in response to heparin was observed in homogenates stored at 0°. 4. Fractionation of the homogenate demonstrated that the viscosity increase was due to the presence of the nuclei alone, other components showing no effect. Microscopic observation showed that the increase in viscosity was associated with the appearance of a clear gel around nuclei treated with heparin. 5. Heparin brought about the release of DNA from the nuclei of incubated rat liver, kidney, and brain homogenates. In some instances over half the DNA is found in the supernatant after high speed centrifugation (20 minutes, 21,000 x g). 6. No correlation was found between anticoagulant activity of heparin preparations and their effectiveness in causing an increase in the viscosity of liver homogenates. Desulfated heparin produced none of the results described here for heparin.  相似文献
