During preimplantation development in mammals, distinct epigenetic marks on oocyte and sperm DNA are remodeled to an embryonic pattern. The UK population of the Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata has declined markedly in the last 30 years but there have been few recent studies of the species. This study examined the relationship between nest success and the predominant habitat type around Spotted Flycatcher nests in two contrasting areas of England. A breeding population in eastern England, a region where numbers of Spotted Flycatchers are known to have decreased dramatically in recent decades, was compared with another in southwest England, where numbers have remained stable or even increased. Whilst there was no difference in breeding success between the two study areas, there were significant differences between habitats, with garden nests more successful than those in farmland or woodland, at both egg and chick stages. Estimates of productivity per nesting attempt were also lower in farmland and woodland, with nests in gardens fledging twice as many chicks as those in either woodland or farmland. The proximate cause of lower success in farmland and woodland was higher nest predation rates during both egg and chick stages. In terms of nesting success, farmland and woodland appear to be similar in quality for this species, but both appear to be suboptimal habitats when compared with gardens, providing evidence of a problem on the breeding grounds for this species, in at least these two habitats.  相似文献

1. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was determined for a range of lakes of varying conductivity (30–4000 μS cm−1) in the low Arctic of SW Greenland. DOC concentration range from <1 to >100 mg C L−1, occasionally approaching 200 mg C L−1 in meromictic, oligosaline lakes. DOC concentration was strongly related to [log10] conductivity and total nitrogen. 2. Peak DOC concentrations (>80 mg L−1) occur in lakes located approximately 50 km from the present ice sheet margin, a zone of low effective precipitation; evaporative concentration is the first‐order control on DOC concentration. Lakes at the coast and closer to the ice margin had lower DOC concentrations (<20 mg C L−1). Local factors, notably the presence or absence of an outflow and catchment morphometry, resulted in considerable variability in concentration (20–100 mg C L−1) within the area of maximum concentration around 51°W. 3. Despite their high DOC concentration, these lakes are essentially colourless. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) absorption (a375) was low in most lakes (<10 m−1) with maximum values (approximately 20 m−1) occurring in one humic‐stained lake in the area. Absorption values corrected for DOC concentration () were very low (<0.6 m2 g−1 C) for all lakes apart from those at the coast, perhaps reflecting greater allochthonous inputs at these sites. 4. S, the spectral slope coefficient, ranged from 16 to 27 μm−1 and was weakly correlated with DOC concentration. Both a375 and S showed similar distribution patterns along the sampling gradient as did DOC, with maximum values at approximately 51°W. High and low S may indicate fresher, more rapidly flushed, systems with less degraded DOM or greater inputs from their catchments. 5. The lakes closer to the head of the fjord with higher conductivity, had low (<0.2 m2 g−1 C) and high S (>21 μm−1) and this may reflect increasingly longer lake water residence times, greater DOM age and photochemical degradation.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among the loliginid squids, a species-rich group of shallowwater muscular squids, have been investigated recently using several approaches, including allozyme electrophoresis and analyses of morphological and DNA sequence data, yet no consensus has been reached. This study examines the effects of combining multiple data sets (morphology, allozymes and DNA sequence data from two mitochondrial genes) on estimates of loliginid phylogeny. Various data combinations were analysed under three maximum parsimony weighting schemes: equal weights for all characters, successive approximations and implicit weights parsimony. When feasible, support for branches within trees was assessed with nonparametric bootstrapping and decay analysis. Some ingroup relationships were consistent across all analyses, but relationships among outgroup taxa and basal ingroup taxa varied. Combining data increased bootstrap support for several nodes. Methods that downweight highly variable characters (i.e. successive approximations and implicit weights parsimony) produced very similar trees which included two major clades: a clade consisting of all species sampled from American waters (except Sepioteuthis ), and a clade of several east Atlantic species ( Loligo forbesi Steenstrup, Loligo vulgaris Lamarck and Loligo reynaudi d'Orbigny) plus several Indo-West Pacific species in the genera Uroteuthis and Loliolus. The Sepioteuthis species occupied a basal position within Loliginidae, but Sepioteuthis itself was not always monophyletic. The position of a clade of a few Lolliguncula species and Loligo (Alloteuthis) also varied across analyses. A new loliginid classification is proposed based on these findings.  相似文献

Background  

Sequence related families of genes and proteins are common in bacterial genomes. In Escherichia coli they constitute over half of the genome. The presence of families and superfamilies of proteins suggest a history of gene duplication and divergence during evolution. Genome encoded protein families, their size and functional composition, reflect metabolic potentials of the organisms they are found in.
