The Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) turtle material from the Mammal Bed at Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, England, has recently been tentatively referred to the Pleurosternidae, although the known synapomorphies of this clade were absent from the specimens. Here we present new evidence from shell bone histology that corroborates reports of pleurosternids at Kirtlington and further reveal that two different histomorphs (= two different taxa) are present in this locality. The first histomorph presents the distinctive histological structure of pleurosternids, which is described herein for the first time: the external cortical bone layers are differentiated into an inner zone of coarse, irregularly interwoven structural fibre bundles and an outer fine-fibred zone. The second histomorph has a more plesiomorphic structure and can only be assigned to Cryptodira indet. A morphological reassessment of the Kirtlington material fails to recognize two different taxa and shows that only sparse evidence supports the presence of pleurosternids in this locality. Shell bone histology thus appears as a powerful tool to study poorly preserved specimens and may in some case (like with pleurosternids) help resolve phylogenetic relationships. According to our results, the stratigraphic appearance of the Pleurosternidae is adjusted from the Kimmeridgian (Late Jurassic) to the Bathonian (Middle Jurassic), which significantly reduces the ghost lineage of Paracryptodira.     Bone histology, turtles, Paracryptodira, Pleurosternidae, Middle Jurassic, Kirtlington.  相似文献

Specialization of some plants on seed‐eating pollinators is intriguing, especially when co‐pollinators exclusively feeding on nectar are also present. We examined the stability of the morphological specialization of Trollius europaeus (L.) globeflowers with respect to Chiastocheta (Pokorny) flies by artificially opening the flowers. In the montane and subalpine environments studied, other visitors contributed 2% and 28% of all the visits, respectively, and visited open flowers nearly eight times more often than closed flowers, but in both environments their contribution to pollination did not compensate for Chiastocheta aversion against open phenotypes. Net seed set (female success) was slightly higher (+4%) and pollen export (male success) was much higher (+85%) for closed than open flowers. Selection in favour of the closed phenotype was even more intense in patches where open phenotypes were most common, precluding the evolution of open flowers in the study populations.  相似文献

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), is one of the most significant biting flies that affect cattle. The use of traditional insecticides for stable fly control has only a limited success owing to the insect's unique feeding behaviours and immature development sites. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of two insect growth regulator (IGR) products, pyriproxyfen and buprofezin, on the development of the immature stages of the stable fly and the effects of pyriproxyfen on oviposition and egg hatch. Both pyriproxyfen and buprofezin had significant inhibitory effects on immature development. The LC50s of pyriproxyfen and buprofezin were 0.002 and 18.92 p.p.m., respectively. Topical treatment of adult females with different doses of pyriproxyfen had significant negative effects on both female oviposition and egg hatching when 1‐ and 3‐day‐old females were treated, and the effects were dose dependent. A significant reduction in the mean number of eggs laid was observed only at the highest pyriproxyfen dose (8 µg/fly) and egg hatch was unaffected by pyriproxyfen treatment when 5‐day‐old females were treated. Results from the present study indicate that pyriproxyfen has the potential to be used as part of an integrated stable fly management programme.  相似文献

The minimum effective geotropic stimulation time is very short for coleoptiles, hypocotyls and roots. New data from the literature are used to emphasize that the minimum time is of the order of 10–20 s. The existence of such a short minimum time should be carefully considered in the design of geotropic experiments in Spacelab, which are now at the planning stage. Even brief acceleration periods at 1 g or less during a flight might cause unintentional geotropic effects. The short minimum stimulation time also has relevance for the statolith theory: since the distance which an amyloplast can sediment during this time is very small, no long sedimentation distance is likely to be required for georeception. Moreover, the magnitude of thermal noise must be considered in evaluating proposals for the georeceptive mechanism.  相似文献

The anatomy of the hydrothermal vent gastropod Provanna is described. It is shown to be a primitive neotaenioglossan with mainly plesiomorphic features in all systems, including open pallial gonoducts, epiathroid nervous system with accessory pedal ganglia and a circulatory system where a considerable portion of the venous blood from the coelomic spaces enters the pallial skirt. Apomorphic features include the possession of an anterior notch, or short canal in the shell (and mantle edge), an annulated sensory pallial tentacle, paraspermatozoa modificd as nurse cells. multiple seminal receptacles, a posterior bursa copulatrix, and a renal oviduct with three distinct regions. the middle one expanded. Comparisons are madc with Abyssochrysos, a genus assumed to be a relict member of the Loxonematoidea, which appears to be the closest known relative. A new family. Provannidae fam.n., is created and tentatively included in the Loxonematoidea. The following new specics are described: Provanna segonzaci sp.n. (from hydrothermal vents at the Fiji Back Arc), P. laevis sp.n. (from hydrothermal seeps in the Gulf of California), P. sculpta sp.n. and P. admetoides sp.n. (from hydrocarbon seeps in the Gulf of Mexico). New records are added for previously described species of Provanna.  相似文献

Cell material from different phases of growth for the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum Printz was analysed for major elements and chlorophyll a content. The ranges in percentage of the dry weight were 50–80%, 4.4–8.8%, 0.24–3.0%, and 0.20–3.23% for C, N, P and chlorophyll a, respectively. The dry weight per cell varied 2.3 times between different growth phases. A N/P-quotient of about 10 (by weight) was found to be a critical level for Selenastrum when these elements were the most limiting nutrients for growth. 31 different organic N-compounds were tested as single N sources in growth experiments with Selenastrum. At least 19 of them could be utilized to varying extent for algal growth. Three organic P-compounds of six tested, were utilized for algal growth. Yield coefficients (mm3 cell volume/mg limiting nutrient element) for Selenastrum were determined with NO3, -N (yN= 134). NH4-N (YN= 111) and PO4-P (YP= 2580).  相似文献

The spatial organization of receptive fields (RF) of neurons was studied in the lateral geniculate body (LGB) of cats with pretrigeminal transection of the brainstem (without general anesthesia). Using systematic point testing of the entire RF area and adjacent regions, the RF configuration and distribution of the response types for a stable flickering stimulus throughout the RF area were determined. Only 40% (64 units of 160 studied) LGB neurons had simple RF configuration. Such RF of ellipsoid or round shape were called regular receptive fields, RRF. Most RRF (51, or about 80%) demonstrated spatially homogeneous organization with similar-type (on, off, oron-off) responses to stimulation of the entire RF area. The RRF of 13 neurons, i.e., about 20%, included subfields with qualitatively different responses to application of a stable flickering light spot. The position of subfields was asymmetrical in 8 neurons (13%), while a nearly concentric RF arrangement, with the center surrounded by an antagonistic area, was found only in 5 units (7%) with RRF.
