1. Urbanisation and agricultural intensification cause the replacement of natural ecosystems but might also create novel habitats in urban and rural ecosystems promoting some insect communities by providing food and nesting resources. 2. This study investigated how host–natural enemy communities change in urban and rural landscapes and their transitional zone, the urban–rural interface, by using trap nests for cavity‐nesting Hymenoptera in gardens and rapeseed fields that were either isolated or paired in the urban–rural interface. 3. Host dynamics were important for natural enemy occurrence, species richness and parasitism rates, and landscape effects were evident for natural enemy variables except for the richness of bee natural enemies. The number of parasitised brood cells was at its highest in the urban–rural interface, but the highest parasitism rates of bees were observed in isolated gardens. Parasitism rates of bees were negatively affected by host abundance, while parasitism rates of wasps were positively affected. 4. Higher specialisation and lower connectivity of host–natural enemy interactions were found in paired habitats than in isolated habitats. This indicates that paired habitats comprise more specific natural enemies and vulnerable interactions, while isolated habitats comprise more generalist natural enemies, and thus interactions appear more stable. 5. These results confirm that host dynamics play an essential role in the abundance and richness of natural enemies and drive parasitism. However, high habitat heterogeneity found in the urban–rural interface can also have an effect on host–natural enemy communities. This highlights that the provisioning of resources in the urban–rural interface can benefit insect communities in these areas.  相似文献

Psychophysically, spatial summation can be demonstrated as a decrease in threshold accompanying an increased field of stimulation. The present study examined to what extent different mechanically evoked percepts (pressure, sharpness, and pain) show spatial summation. Various probes were used to apply prescribed forces to the dorsal surface of the digits of 19 healthy subjects. The threshold for three perceptual qualities showed differing degrees of spatial summation: sharpness showed no statistically significant spatial summation; pain demonstrated some significant summation (46% on average); pressure showed the greatest degree of spatial summation (76% on average). The lack of significant spatial summation for sharpness threshold is consistent with the theory that perceived sharpness can be evoked by near threshold activity of a single nociceptor. The modest amount of spatial summation for pain implies that distinctly suprathreshold activation of nociceptors is required for mechanically evoked pain perception, and such input summates centrally, but not completely. The greater spatial summation observed for pressure vs. pain thresholds implies a greater degree of central summation for slowly adapting mechanoreceptors vs. nociceptors.  相似文献

The trypanosomatid previously described as Crithidia roitmani is characterized here at the ultrastructural and biochemical levels. The data indicates that the parasite belongs to the Herpetomonas genus, and we therefore suggest the flagellate to be denominated as Herpetomonas roitmani n. comb. Cladistic analysis of isoenzyme data generated by eight different enzymes showed that the parasite presented a distinct banding pattern and could be grouped with some Herpetomonas spp., but not with Crithidia spp., used as reference strains. Accordingly, when the parasites were grown for longer periods in Roitman's defined medium, expontaneous differentiation from promastigotes to opisthomastigotes (typical of the Herpetomonas genus) occurred. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of bacterium-like endosymbionts in the cytoplasm of all evolutive forms of the parasite. All morphological alterations characteristic of endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatids could be observed.  相似文献

The role of six Rhizobium strains in the nitrogen metabolismof soybeans (Glycine max Merril) was studied under glasshouseand field conditions. The strains could be divided into twogroups, group I which produced a large nodule mass with relativelylow efficiency and group II which produced less nodule massbut which fixed the same amount of nitrogen. Plants inoculatedwith group I strains remobilized nitrogen faster from leavesbut also lost more nitrogen in senesced leaves. Although thetotal nitrogen transported in the xylem was similar for allstrains, plants inoculated with group I strains contained lessnitrogen in ureides in the xylem sap during the whole growthcycle. This difference was reflected in the nitrogen partitioningwithin the shoot, and smaller nitrogen harvest indexes wereobserved in these plants than in those inoculated with strainsof group II. The role of ureides in the nitrogen partitioningand grain yield was confirmed by the significant correlationbetween mean ureide content in xylem sap and nitrogen partitioningor yield. Further, nodules formed with group I strains evolvedmore hydrogen than those formed with group II strains and thepossible significance of this is discussed. Chromosomal races of the house mouse ( Mus domesticus ) occur extensively in Italy. The present paper reports results of studies on a hybrid zone in Central Italy on a chromosomal race with a 2 n = 22 karyotype and surrounding populations with a standard 2 n = 40 karyotype. Karyotypic and morphometric patterns of variation in this area are discussed in an attempt to contribute to an understanding of the chromosomal speciation in this species. Data are compared, where possible, with other findings on the same hybrid zone. Finally, it is suggested that changes in behavioural traits (inter-male aggression and female socio-sexual preferences) may help in promoting complete genetic isolation.  相似文献

  • 1 The origin of vertical temperature stratification in Erstwhile Water (Lake District, Cumbria, England) was observed.
  • 2 At the first stage of the spring warming of the whole water column some discontinuity in the vertical temperature distribution appears in the surface and bottom layers.
  • 3 Persistent summer stratification occurred for the first time at the lee end of the lake immediately after a change of wind direction, when the cumulative potential energy deficit dominated the cumulative kinetic energy by about 110-8 Jcm-2.
  • 4 The results show the importance of the proper choice of initial conditions in computations of total energy, as well as the necessity to consider the spatial distribution of potential and mechanical energy responsible for the summer stratification in the lake.

Cellular extracts of Tetrahymena thermophila were found to contain substantial levels of proteolytic activity. Protein digestion occurred over broad ranges of pH, ionic strength, and temperature and was stimulated by treatment with thiol reductants, EDTA and sodium dodecyl sulfate. Incubation at temperatures ≥60° C or with high concentrations of chaotropic reagents such as 10 M urea or 6 M guanidine-HCl caused an apparent irreversible loss of activity. Activity was also strongly diminished by increasing concentrations of divalent cations. Several peptide aldehydes, p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, and alkylating reagents such as iodoacetate, N-tosyl-L-lysine chloromethyl ketone, N-tosyl-L-phenylalanine chloromethyl ketone, N-methylmaleimide, and trans-epoxysuccinyl-L-leucylamido-(4-guanidino)-butane were potent inhibitors of proteolytic activity. Aprotinin diminished activity by approximately 40% while benzamidine, 3,4-dichloroisocoumarin, and trypsin inhibitors from soy bean, lima bean, and chicken egg caused relatively modest inhibition of proteolytic activity. Phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride had no apparent effect. Electrophoretic separation of proteins on SDS-polyacrylamide gels copolymerized with gelatin substrate revealed that at least eight active proteolytic enzymes were present in cell extracts ranging in apparent molecular weight from 45,000 to 110,000. Five of these apparent proteases were detected in 70% ammonium sulfate precipitates. Gelatinase activity was not detectable when extracts were pretreated with iodoacetate or E-64, indicating that all of the enzymes observed in activity gels were sensitive to thiol alkylation. Cellular extracts of T. thermophila appeared to contain multiple forms of proteolytic enzymes which were stimulated by thiol reductants and inhibited by thiol modifying reagents. Accordingly, the proteolytic enzymes present in cell extracts appear to be predominantly cysteine proteinases.  相似文献

The influence of the pineal gland on the hypothalamic serotonergic function was examined by studying the effects of long-term pinealectomy (1 month) and melatonin replacement (500 μg/kg; 10 days) on serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) content as well as on the in vivo 5-HT synthesis rate in discrete hypothalamic nuclei. Pinealectomy was followed by a significant decrease of 5-HT content in the anterior hypothalamic nuclei (AHN) and the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (VMHN), and also in 5-HIAA content in lateral (LPON) and medial preoptic nuclei (MPON). The 5-HT synthesis rate, estimated from the accumulation of 5-hydroxytryptophan after blockade of the 1-amino acid decarboxylase activity, were also decreased in the AHN and the paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei (PVHN) of pinealectomized rats. In contrast, an enhanced 5-HT synthesis rate and basal 5-HIAA content were found in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) after pinealectomy. Daily treatment with melatonin for 10 days reversed most of the effects induced by pinealectomy. Thus, melatonin increased the levels of 5-HT in the AHN and VMHN, and slightly increased the 5-HIAA content in preoptic nuclei. In addition, melatonin increased the 5-HT synthesis rate in the AHN and VMHN, but also in the MPON, VMHN and dorsomedial hypothalamic nuclei (DMHN) where pinealectomy had no effect. By contrast, melatonin treatment did not affect SCN 5-HT synthesis rate, although it decreased 5-HIAA levels. The results demonstrate that melatonin is able to stimulate 5-HT metabolism in most of the hypothalamic areas, but inhibits SCN 5-HT function. Some of the effects of melatonin seems to be exerted by modulating the synthesis of the amine, although melatonin likely also interacts with other regulatory processes of 5-HT function (i.e. release/uptake). The well defined presence of melatonin receptors in the rat SCN, and its absence in other hypothalamic structures, suggest that this may be the mechanism mediating the differential response to endogenous melatonin. Moreover, the larger effect of exogenous melatonin in relation to pinealectomy suggests the presence of melatonin unespecific effects possibly owing to supraphysiological doses. The present findings may be relevant for the mode of action of melatonin and its implication in several endocrine and behavioral functions mediated by serotonergic neurons.
