During the past two to three decades, Drosophila ananassae, a warm adapted tropical species, has invaded low to mid altitude localities in the western Himalayas. Due to its cold sensitivity, this species had never been recorded from higher latitudes as well as altitudes in India to the 1960s. A latitudinal cline in this desiccation‐sensitive species corresponds with southern humid tropical localities rather than northern drier subtropical localities. An extension of its cline into lowland to midland montane localities has resulted due to global climatic change as well as local thermal effects through anthropogenic impact. However, D. ananassae populations at species borders are characterized by lower genetic variability for body melanization as well as for desiccation resistance. There is a lack of thermal plastic effects for body melanization, and the observed extended cline might represent evolutionary (genetic) response due to selection pressure imposed by drier habitats. A comparison of fecundity, hatchability and viability at three growth temperatures (17, 20 and 25°C) showed significant reduction in trait values at 17°C in D. ananassae. Thus, its recent range expansion into northern montane localities might involve genetic effects on stress‐related traits and plastic effects on life history traits. We suggest that D. ananassae could serve as an indicator species for analyzing range expansion under changing climatic conditions. 相似文献

In most tropical regions where wheat is grown under irrigation, high temperatures at sowing adversely affect crop establishment and subsequent seedling survival. The objective of this study was to compare wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes for their ability to germinate and grow at high temperatures during the seedling stage. Twenty-five seeds each of 14 spring wheat cultivars were placed on moist filter paper at different temperatures (5°C to 40°C) in a one-way thermogradient plate to determine the cardinal temperatures for germination. Rate of germination at each temperature for each genotype was computed as the inverse of time taken for 50% of the seeds to germinate. Rate of germination for each genotype at different temperatures was modelled with temperature to determine the base (tb), and optimum (topt) temperatures. Response of germination to temperature for each genotype was calculated as the slope of a linear regression of the rate of germination on temperature below topt. Genotypes differed in their optimum temperatures and Mexipak (= Kalyansona) had the lowest. Range in base temperature among the genotypes was between 0°C and 2°C differences but were not statistically significant though they might be biologically significant. Genotypes differed in their response to temperature with Gomam having the lowest rate, implying that it was slow to respond to increasing temperatures. Debeira and Cham 6 showed a similar response. Three lines which had performed well in spring wheat evaluation trials for moderate rainfall areas under heat stress had the highest response rate. It is concluded that combining higher optimum temperatures with faster response rates would result in better-adapted germplasm for regions where high temperatures persist at sowing. 相似文献

The present study deals with structure and functioning of threeareas of Himalayan oak forest. Low- and mid-altitude oaks, namelyQuercus leucotrichophora, and Quercus floribunda, form predominantevergreen forests in Central and Western Himalaya. The totaltree basal cover ranged between 33·89 m2 ha1 (Q.floribunda site) to 36·83 m2 ha1 (Q. leucotrichophorasite). The density ranged between 570 and 760 individuals ha1.Allometric equations relating biomass of different tree componentsto GBH (girth at breast height) were significant with the exceptionof leaf biomass in Q. leucotrichophora and Rhododendron arboreum.Total vegetation biomass (29·40467·0 tha1) was distributed as 377·1 t ha1 intrees, 5·40 t ha1 in shrubs and 1·23 tha1 in herbs. Total forest floor biomass ranged between4·6 and 6·2 t ha1. Of the total annuallitter fall (4·74·8 t ha1), 77·5% was contributed by leaf litter, 17·8 % by wood litterand 4·7 % by miscellaneous litter. Turnover rate of treelitter varied from 0·66 to 0·70. Net primary productionof total vegetation ranged between 15·9 and 20·6t ha1 yr1, of which the contribution of trees,shrubs and herbs was 81·2 %, 8·6 % and 10·2%, respectively. The distribution of assimilates of 14CO2 in ethanol soluble and insoluble fractions was measured at 20-day intervals from 45–135 days after sowing (DAS) in chickpea (Cicer arietinum) grown at two moisture levels. The contribution of pre-flowering assimilates to pods, although very low, was higher under the stress conditions. At the time of harvest, the recovery of 14C in pods was 0.4 and 0.9% of the total 14C fed 45 DAS in soluble and 2.5 and 5.1% in insoluble fractions in control and stressed plants, respectively. The %14C received by nodules continuously decreased with increasing age of plants. Stressed plants diverted more 14C to nodules, compared to control, during vegetative and flowering stages. During active seed filling, stressed plants diverted more 14C to reproductive parts and less to nodules, compared to control. Significant amounts of 14C were retgined by the stem and leaves during the seed-filling period and it appears that there is scope for the remobilisation of pre-flowering, as well as post-flowering assimilates for seed-filling of chickpea. 相似文献

It was recorded attacking five aphidiids, Lysiphlebus delhiensis (Subba Rao & Sharma), Trioxys indicus Subba Rao & Sharma, Aphidius uzbekistanicus Luzhetzki, Lipolexis scutellaris Mackauer and Lysiphlebia mirzai Shuja-Uddin (in order of preference) out of eight species of aphidiid parasitoids tested.
3. Percentage of hyperparasitism of aphids infesting cucurbits, cereals and pulses is higher than in solanaceous crops. Maximum hyperparasitism was recorded on the T. indicus/Aphis gossypii Glover/cucurbit complex.
4. The aphid host as well as the food plants significantly influence its efficiency.

THE Lyon hypothesis of X chromosome inactivation predicts that in mammalian females, somatic cells are mosaic with respect to whether the active X chromosome is of maternal or paternal origin and that this chromosomal mosaicism is heritable somatically1. Studies of cell clones derived from females who were heterozygous for genes at one of several X-linked loci2–6 have provided good evidence for such mosaicism. Proof that only one of the two X chromosomes, however, is active in any given cell rests on the demonstration that the cell or its clone expresses all of the X-linked genes from one parent and none from the other parent. For this purpose it is useful to examine cloned cells from female subjects for genetic markers representing allelic genes at two or more of the parental loci.
