The question which was the basis of this work was whether (a)vascular regeneration around wounds includes a replacement ofdamaged tissues or (b) only new vascular strands, which arenormally formed from the cambium, are diverted around wounds.It was found that in Coleus and Cucumis no connections are formedto damaged sieve tubes and vessels, so that their continuityaround wounds is not restored. Pisum plants were wounded underconditions in which growth could not be influenced and the areaof the xylem in cross-section was measured 1 month later. Thewounds, which damaged the vascular tissues, significantly increasedvascular differentiation, indicating the replacement of a longnon-functional region of damaged tissues. The results indicatethat in the intact plant vascular differentiation is controllednot only by stimuli from the leaves but also by the capacityof the mature vascular system to transport these stimuli. 相似文献

The Relationship between Sucrose Supply, Sucrose-cleaving Enzymes and Flower Abortion in Pepper 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
Abortion of pepper flowers depends on the light intensity perceivedby the plant and on the amounts of sucrose taken up by the flower(Aloni B, Karni L, Zaidman Z, Schaffer AA. 1996.Annals of Botany78: 163168). We hypothesize that changes in the activityof sucrose-cleaving enzymes within the flower ovary might beresponsible for the changes in flower abortion under differentlight conditions. In the present study we report that the activityof sucrose synthase, but not of cytosolic acid invertase, increasesin flowers of pepper plants which were exposed, for 2 d, toincreasing photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in therange of 85400 µmol m-2s-1at midday. Sucrose synthaseactivity increased in parallel with the increasing concentrationsof starch in the flower ovary. Feeding flower explants, preparedfrom 3-d-predarkened plants, with 100 mM sucrose for 24 h, causeda 23% increase in reducing sugars and a 2.5-fold increase instarch concentration, compared with explants fed with buffer.Likewise, feeding explants of pepper flowers with sucrose, glucose,fructose and also mannitol increased the sucrose synthase activityin the ovaries. Concomitantly, sucrose, glucose and fructose,but not mannitol, reduced the abortion of flower explants. Itis suggested that sucrose entry into the flower increases theflower sink activity by inhibiting abscission and inducing metabolicchanges, thus enhancing flower set. Role of ethylene and auxin in regenerative differentiation and orientation of tracheids in Pinus pinea seedlings 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A low auxin concentration (0.1% naphthalene acetic acid) induced tracheids with longitudinal polarity parallel to the hypocotyl axis in young Pinus pinea seedlings. Application of 0.1% ethrel laterally and 0.1% naphthalene acetic acid apically disturbed axial tracheid polarity and promoted the differentiation of tracheids with a lateral orientation. Ethrel by itself, with no auxin background, did not affect tracheid differentiation. Apical application of 1% gibberellic acid with the low auxin, reversed the polarity disorder induced by ethrel. Disturbance of axial tracheid polarity was observed under a high auxin concentration (0.5% naphthalene acetic acid) which was similar to the combined effect of ethrel and auxin. The high auxin concentration increased tracheid number significantly. This effect was curtailed following treatment with inhibitors of ethylene formation (Co2+ ; 1-aminoethoxy- vinylglycine) and action (Ag2+ ). The role of ethylene in controlling the differentiation of radial tracheids, which characterize the vascular rays of pines, is discussed. 相似文献

The vascular rays of old, thick stems of E. campylopoda differ greatly from the known ray structure found in young stems of the same species, and from the common ray structure of other woody species. The large rays in thick stems include xylem in various orientations, and they intermingle with the axial system. The stems of Y-shaped (double stemmed) tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants were mechanically perturbed(MP) by stroking for 6 successive days. The treatment reducedelongation of the two stems by 40 per cent. When only one branchof the pair was treated, its length was reduced to the sameextent as the two branches in the previous treatment, whilethe elongation of the untreated branch was increased by 60 percent over that of the control. Withholding irrigation induced stem pithiness due to droughtstress in non-MP-plants. However, in MP-pretreated plants, thenumber of pithy internodes was markedly less and the degreeof severity of the disorder was reduced. Ethrel applicationmimicked the effects of MP on pithiness. A simple experimental method for studying the differentiationof vessel endings is described. Vessel endings are induced andtheir location is determined experimentally along an internodeby a complete horizontal cut. The frequency of vessel endingsis very high in the first 5 mm immediately below the cut andtheir number declined sharply in the basipetal direction. Primary phloem fibres of Pisum sativum deposit lignified cellwalls, 2 and 5 days after germination in root and stem, respectively.Fibre bundles reach their final size within 46 days.The differentiation of the bundles as a whole is faster in thestem compared with the root. In the special diverging bundlesof the lower internodes of the stem the peripheral portionsmature earlier than the inner portions. There are two types of sites where aggregate rays in Quercusithaburensis Decne. and Q. calliprinos Webb do not occur naturallyin the tree: branch junctions and small ridges of wood. Partialgirdling of Quercus trunks resulted in the dispersion of aggregaterays which diffused into numerous simple rays. The effect of heat stress on processes related to carbohydratepartitioning was investigated in young bell pepper (Capsicumannum L. cv. Maor) plants in relation to abscission of theirreproductive organs at different stages of development. None of the reproductive organs abscised after 5 d in a normalday/night temperature regime (25/18 °C). With a temperatureregime of 35 °C day, 25 °C night, abscission occurredin only a small portion of the flower buds and none of the flowersand fruitlets. However, when temperatures in the day and nightwere reversed (25/35 °C, day/night) all the buds and someof the flowers abscised during that time period. The young fruitat the first node did not abscise under any temperature regime.The abscission rate of the flower buds was reduced under heatstress if the developing fruit at the first node had been removed. High temperature during either the light or dark periods reducedthe export of [14C]sucrose from the source leaf (fed for 48h with [14C]sucrose). Both heat stress and fruit presence reduced the relative amountof [14C]sucrose which was exported to the flower buds, flowersand roots. Likewise, these treatments reduced the concentrationof reducing sugars in the reproductive organs. Concomitantly,the heat stress and fruit presence on the first node reducedthe activity of soluble acid invertase in the flower buds andthe roots, but not in young leaves. Overall, the results show that heat stress causes alternationin sucrose distribution in the plant, but may also have specificeffects on metabolic activities related to sucrose import andutilization in flower buds and flowers which in turn may enhancetheir abscission.
