Rhizome Growth and Clone Development in Anemone nemorosa L.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Studies of natural populations indicate that clones grow radially,soon developing a hollow centre which may be invaded by newgenotypes. In the populations studied, individual rhizomes elongate byan average of 2.5 cm per year. Growth is sympodial, the terminalbud forming an aerial shoot and further elongation occurringfrom an axillary bud. The oldest rhizome segment found was 7 years with most rhizomesbeing 3 or 4 years old. Because there is no apparent senescence,individual clones may persist for very long periods, possiblyhundreds of years. A computer model of rhizome growth was used to postulate theextent of intermixing of old clones. It indicated that old clonesbecome very fragmentary and totally inmixed with their neighbours,one ‘clump’ often representing several clones. To supplement the model, plants from a woodland with an unbrokencarpet of Anemone nemorosa were collected, 27 morphologicalcharacters measured and the data analysed using principal componentsanalysis and cluster analysis. These supported the hypothesisthat old clones are large and fragmentary with complete intermixing. The possible role of soil factors in influencing rhizome extensionis discussed and the strategy of A.nemorosa is compared withthose of its close associates in the pre-vernal woodland herblayer. Abstract. When a butterfly species has a polymorphic female, with one of the forms closely resembling the male, it is customary to suppose that this form is ancestral, and that the ‘odd’ forms have arisen later. R. I. Vane-Wright, on the other hand, has suggested that in some species the male-like form may be a ‘transvestite’ female, the ancestral form of the female having been strikingly unlike the male. As later-derived forms are usually, but not always, genetically dominant to ancestral forms, we can make some choice between these hypotheses by discovering the dominance relations of the male-like and the ‘odd’ forms of the female. In the mimetic Papilio aegeus the male-like form is shown to be recessive to the ‘odd’ (mimetic) form, as has essentially been the case in all other butterflies so far investigated. Papilio phorcas is now shown to be the exception: the ‘odd’ (non-mimetic) form is recessive to the male-like form. We conclude that usually the male-like form is ancestral, but that P.phorcas may be an authentic example of ‘transvestism’, or the ‘transfer’ of male epigamic colour to the female of the species. The yellow, male-like pattern of the mimetic Papilio dardanus may be dominant or recessive to the mimetic forms according to the genetic background: largely recessive in Madagascar, and southern and western Africa, dominant to most forms in Ethiopia, and probably dominant to one mimetic form but recessive to the others in Kenya. All female dardanus patterns, both mimetic and yellow, are strongly dominant to both female phorcas patterns in P. dardanus × P. phorcas hybrids (P. ‘nandina’). The simplest explanation of this situation is that the male-like pattern of dardanus is ancestral, and that dominance has become locally reversed in Ethiopia. The dominance relations, and the sex- or autosomal-linkage of two forms can be determined without pedigree-breeding, simply by observing a few offspring each from a large number of wild-caught females.  相似文献

The mouse b locus controls black/brown coat coloration. Its product, the b-protein or TRP-1, has significant homology to tyrosinase, and this has led to suggestions that the b-protein is itself a melanogenic enzyme. In order to investigate its function, we have used lines of mouse fibroblasts stably expressing the b-protein. We were unable to con-firm previous reports that the b-protein has tyrosinase or catalase activity, but detected stereospecific dopachrome tautomerase activity in b-protein-expressing fibroblasts. This dopachrome tautomerase binds to Concanavalin A-Sepharose, and the major product of its action on L-dopachrome is 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid, as expected for the mammalian enzyme. Since this activity is not present in untransfected fibroblasts we conclude that the b-protein has dopachrome tautomerase activity. Further supporting evidence comes from the analysis of melanin metabolites produced by fibroblasts expressing tyrosinase alone, or in combination with the b-protein. Culture medium from the line expressing both proteins contains significant amounts of methylated carboxylated indoles, such as 6-hydroxy-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid, which would be expected in cells with an active dopachrome tautomerase. The levels of these compounds in medium from cells expressing tyrosinase alone are approximately 20-fold lower, and not significantly above background. Hence, it appears that the b-protein acts as a dopachrome tautomerase in vivo as well as in vitro.  相似文献

The influence of environmental factors on the duration of diapause was evaluated in larvae of Ephestia elutella (Hübner) reared in short photo-periods at 25C or below. Termination of diapause was hastened by long photoperiods, high temperatures, long periods at low temperature, or exposure to fumigants. Diapause terminated rapidly under long photoperiods at 30 or 25C, but not at 20C. The critical photoperiod for the termination of diapause was similar to that for induction, lying between 13 and 16 h at 25C. The longest duration of diapause occurred in constant darkness (DD) at 20C. However, batches of larvae reared at 20C in DD pupated a little sooner than batches reared under LD, if both were transferred at the start of diapause to warm, long-day conditions. Long exposure to low temperature reduced the number of long photoperiods necessary for the rapid termination of diapause at high temperature. Samples of larvae brought to the laboratory at monthly intervals from an unheated outbuilding in which they were overwintering, required an average of c. 200 days to pupate in DD at 25C when transferred in December, compared with only 32 days when transferred in February or March. By comparison, batches transferred to LD 16:8 at 25C required 39 days when transferred in December and 20–24 days in February and March. Holding at low temperature for long periods also encouraged synchronous emergence of the sexes. Duration of diapause was generally shorter in a laboratory stock than in a stock collected from the field.  相似文献

Early in sporangial ontogeny, the cells destined to become thesporogenous and tapetal tissue differentiate in a strikinglysimilar manner. The first conspicuous step in development isa contraction of the protoplasts, beginning at the centre ofthe microsporangium and moving radially to its periphery. Similardevelopment of the two groups of cells ceases as the callosewall is formed around the meiocytes. At this point the originalwalls investing the tapetal cells become gelatinous, and lipidsynthesis commences within the contracted protoplasts. The bulkof this lipid is secreted from the cells, and becomes lodgedin the loculus, either as globules in the expanded radial andinner cell walls, or as a continuous layer on the inside ofthe middle lamella separating the loculus from the wall of themicrosporangium. This lipoidal layer forms the basement of aperitapetal membrane, believed to serve as a container for thefluid in which the young sporogenous cells are immersed. Examination of protein levels and ribosome numbers in the tapetalcells reveals that protein synthesis proceeds at an increasingrate throughout the development preceding meiosis, but apparentlyceases as the pollen mother cells become enveloped in callose.  相似文献

Seeds stored under various conditions showed deteriorative changesin extremely dry (1% r.h. at 10 °C) or humid (93% r.h. at25 °C) conditions after 6 weeks storage, when little orno loss of viability had taken place; no changes were detectedin intermediate conditions (45% r.h. at 10 °C). The lossof electrolytes from seeds into water increased after 3 weeksof humid storage, and subsequently dead areas developed on thecotyledons of seeds held in either humid or dry conditions.With time in storage some of the seeds in dry conditions showeda reduction in the rate of imbibition, and consequently a lowlevel of electrolyte leakage. Other seeds showed an increasein leakage following dry storage. No change in solute content(sugars, potassium, and electrolytes) was detected in seedsstored in humid conditions, suggesting that the increased electrolyteleakage was caused by an impaired ability to retain solutes.Thus increased leakage was recorded in seeds whose cotyledonscontained no dead areas as revealed by vital staining, and wastherefore attributable to changes in living cells, possiblydeterioration in cell membranes. Viability began to declineafter 6 weeks in humid storage at 25 °C and after 2 d in94% r.h. at 45 °C, but was maintained in both dry and intermediateconditions. The rate at which viability fell in humid storagewas greatly influenced by the initial condition of the seed.  相似文献

1. The biological productivity of floodplain rivers is intimately related to their flow regimes and it has been proposed that fish production should be linked to components of the flow regime in productivity models. To assess applicability of existing models of productivity in floodplain rivers, we tested predictions about growth during the early life stages of a common, short‐lived fish (Australian smelt Retropinna semoni) in a non‐flow‐altered, temperate Australian floodplain river. 2. The morphometric condition of larval and juvenile fish measured over a five‐year period was positively related to annual discharge, but the highest average seasonal growth rates occurred in two years of contrasting hydrology, one with early spring flooding and the other with predominantly low flows and a late season (within channel) flow pulse. 3. Analysis of daily growth measures indicated that timing, river height, the duration of in‐channel flow events and antecedent flood events are all significant factors influencing the early growth of Australian smelt. The flexible manner in which fish growth responds to these factors appears to be an effective early life history strategy for a short‐lived species occupying a highly variable environment. 4. Growth rates conformed to some predictions of the Flood Pulse Concept (in particular the Extended Flood Pulse Concept), but specific growth responses suggest that the Riverine Productivity Model and tenets of the Low Flow Recruitment Hypothesis best describe the production of Australian smelt in this system. We suggest that none of the existing conceptual models adequately describes fish productivity in temperate Australian floodplain rivers but that aspects of each are likely to be relevant under different flow conditions.  相似文献

The canopy-borne store of seed in the kwongan plant communities at Kulin and Eneabba, and in the forest understorey stratum at Jarrahdale, Western Australia was found to average 1121, 305 and 7 seeds m-2, respectively. The bradysporous seed reserve of the plant communities increased with decreasing average annual rainfall. In comparisons between species of the same genus, obligatory reseeding bradysporous species tended to have greater numbers of seed per plant than resprouting species. The bradysporous species richness and the average seed content per plant within a species did not vary significantly with soil type, although the bradysporous species composition changed.  相似文献
