Summary Traits which differ among species in a genus are considered to be the product of relatively rapid evolution. Laboratory studies indicate that copulation differs between two species of the banana slug Ariolimax with A. dolichophallus having a pattern of a single, long duration (typically greater than 1 h) intromission which is simultaneously reciprocal, and A. californicus having mating encounters typically involving a bout of brief (typically 10–20 min) unilateral intromissions. Reciprocal apophallation was observed for both species. Field observations confirm simultaneously reciprocal copulation and apophallation in A. dolichophallus. Mating was more frequent in the spring and summer months. In laboratory studies the two species also differed in life history parameters; mean growth rate was greater in A. californicus than A. dolichophallus, whereas eggs are larger in A. dolichophallus (range = 0.33–0.5 g; n=59) than in A. californicus (range= 0.08–0.27 g; n=164). 相似文献

In this paper, we describe spatial variation in the demography of the Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia. Long-term population studies of birds have generally considered only single sites in optimal habitat, but recent theory has shown the value of taking spatial variation in population dynamics into account. In this theory, collections of local populations in habitat patches connected by dispersal are denned as metapopulations. We review metapopulation models briefly and then use these ideas in a study of the Song Sparrow. Sparrows were studied on islands of varying size and degree of isolation from the North American continent. For analysis, these islands are grouped into three areas. Sparrows on the isolated Mandarte Island usually reproduced and survived well over 17 years but suffered from catastrophic mortality in some winters. After such events, the population recovered quickly without much immigration. Sparrows on smaller islets near Mandarte also survived and reproduced well during 4 years, and they did not experience severe mortality in a winter in which those on Mandarte declined by over 90%. These small islets frequently exchanged first year birds, but only one yearling bird moved between the small islets and the more isolated Mandarte. Sparrows at one of two sites on the larger Westham Island, near the continental mainland, survived less well than on the small offshore islands. Reproduction on Westham Island was poor because of frequent nest failure and high levels of brood parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds Molothrus ater. Despite this poor reproduction and survival, the Westham population remained stable as a result of immigration. We interpret the dynamics of these sparrow populations in terms of H. R. The effects of ectoparasites on the body mass of Sand Martin Riparia riparia nestlings were experimentally tested. When the ambient temperature is lowered to an insect's lower thermal limit, the insect enters into chill coma. Chill coma temperature and chill coma recovery can vary within species as a result of thermal acclimation, although the physiological basis of the onset of chill coma remains poorly understood. The present study investigates how the temperature of acclimation (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C for 2 or 7 days) affects chill coma temperature and oxygen consumption in adult Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). It is hypothesized that the threshold decline in metabolic rate corresponds to the entry into chill coma. Oxygen consumption (as a proxy of metabolism) is measured across the chill coma temperature threshold, and a strong decline in oxygen consumption is expected at entry into chill coma. The acclimation decreases the chill coma temperature significantly from 6.6 ± 1.1 °C in control insects to 3.1 ± 0.7 °C in those acclimated to 10 °C. The change in metabolic rate (Q10) after acclimation to temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 °C is 3.7. Despite acclimation, the metabolic rate of A. diaperinus conforms to Arrhenius kinetics, suggesting that the response of this beetle does not show metabolic compensation. The data suggest the existence of a threshold decline in metabolic rate during cooling that coincides with the temperature at which an insect goes into chill coma. 相似文献
