Metalloproteinases have a critical role in a broad spectrum of cellular processes ranging from the break-down of extracellulax matrix to the processing of signal transduction-related proteins. These hydrolyticfunctions underlie a variety of mechanisms related to developmental processes as well as disease states.Structural analysis of metalloproteinases from both invertebrate and vertebrate species indicates that theseenzymes are highly conserved and arose early during metazoan evolution. In this regard, studies from vari-ous laboratories have reported that a number of classes of metalloproteinases are found in hydra, a memberof Cnidaria, the second oldest of existing animal phyla. These studies demonstrate that the hydra genomecontains at least three classes of metalloproteinases to include members of the 1) astacin class, 2) matrix met-alloproteinase class, and 3) neprilysin class. Functional studies indicate that these metalloproteinases playdiverse and important roles in hydra morphogenesis and cell differentiation as well as specialized functionsin adult polyps. This article will review the structure, expression, and function of these metalloproteinasesin hydra.  相似文献

Four plastid markers, four nuclear markers and 14 morphometric characters were used in this study to investigate the evolution of Dactylorhiza baltica (Orchidaceae) in European Russia. In total, 98, 214 and 775 samples from 85, 112 and 121 populations were involved in the combined and separate molecular and morphometric analyses, respectively. In most cases, morphometric measures were done on exactly the same plants that were used for DNA studies. Dactylorhiza baltica plants from European Russia are most probably the products of several recent and mostly local hybridization events between the diploids D. fuchsii and D. incarnata , which have each been the maternal parent on different occasions. Considerable introgression into the parental diploids via the allopolyploid D. baltica is also hypothesized. Several morphological characters, such as length of the lip lateral lobe and the length of longest leaf, were found to be robust and could be useful in identification of D. baltica . First record of fossil Mesozoic Ctenopoda (Crustacea, Cladocera)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Pre-Pleistocene representatives of the crustacean order Ctenopoda Sars, 1865 are unknown. Here we describe Mesozoic fossil specimens of ctenopods from two localities in Mongolia: Khotont (Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, about 145 Mya) and Khutel Khara (Lower Cretaceous, about 129 Mya). All specimens apparently belonged to the tribe Latonini Korovchinsky, 1986 of the subfamily Sidinae Baird, 1850. At the Khotont site, ctenopods were the most numerous microscopic animal fossils. We assigned these cladocerans to a new genus and species Archelatona zherikhini gen. nov., sp. nov. The maxilla II, normally present in crustaceans, is absent in most adult anomopods although it was found to occur in embryos of six species of this group. The appendage is reduced in representatives of families that lack it in the adult. The disappearance of the second maxilla is accomplished in a different way in the Chydoridae and Bosminidae as compared with the Daphniidae. A biramous structure of this appendage was observed in some stages of development in the largest species of Anomopoda. This feature of morphology is similar to the situation in other Branchiopoda.  相似文献

To analyse the status and phylogeny of the genusPhyllocladus,seedsof all seven species of the genus were studied. The complexof features of thePhyllocladusreproductive system point to theisolated position of the genus within the conifers. Relationswith Podocarpaceae s. l., Taxaceae s. l. and Cephalotaxaceaeappeared to be remote because a complex of features clearlydistinguishesPhyllocladusfrom the afore-mentioned taxa. We findit advisable to circumscribe the family Phyllocladaceae as Bessey(1907) did, and place it into the order Taxales Knobl. in Warming(1890). From investigations of the seeds it appears the genusPhyllocladusconsistsof seven species, forming five groups. There is a significanttendency for transformation of the female reproductive structureswithin the generic boundaries ofPhyllocladus—seeds, originallysolitary, tending to aggregate in various kinds of compact clusters.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company PhyllocladusL. Fruit structure (anatomy) was studied in 27 species of 15 genera of Monimiaceae s.s. Almost all have apocarpous gynoecia, with the carpels more or less surrounded by a floral cup. The fruitlets are presented on the opened floral cup, which, depending on its pre‐ and post‐floral development, differentially contributes to the attractive part of the mature fruit. Morphologically similar fruits may differ conspicuously in anatomical structure. Based on anatomical characters two different fruit forms were found: drupe(let)s (with compact sclerenchymatic endocarp forming a stone: putamen) and berry(let)s (with parenchymatic endocarp, and mesocarp parenchyma containing isolated sclereid nests). Four types of drupelets differing by the endocarp structure were tentatively distinguished: (1) the Monimia‐type has a many‐cell‐layered putamen of large isodiametric sclereids, interrupted on the ventral side by few radial rows of small sclereids; (2) the Hortonia‐type has a few‐cell‐layered putamen of isodiametric, especially thick‐walled sclereids – it may be composed of two lateral halves, i.e. with the sclerenchyma partially interrupted on the ventral and dorsal sides (but without rows of small sclereids); (3) the Mollinedia‐type has a few‐cell‐layered putamen, with more or less radially elongate sclereids with wavy cell walls; and (4) the Hedycarya‐type has a one‐cell‐layered putamen of pronouncedly radially elongate sclereids with wavy cell walls. Drupelets of some taxa with a single‐cell‐layered endocarp with only weakly thickened cell walls may represent a transition from drupelets to berrylets. The fruit structure supports three major clades recognized earlier by morphological studies and by molecular phylogenetic analyses: (1) Monimioideae (Monimia‐type drupelets), (2) Hortonieae of Mollinedioideae (Hortonia‐type drupelets), and (3) the remainder of Mollinedioideae (Hedycarya‐ and Mollinedia‐types) and berrylets. Geometric morphometric techniques were employed to assess the diversity of lip shapes (305 samples from 83 populations) in flowers of European Russian Dactylorhiza (Orchidaceae: Orchidinae). We found significant agreement between the results from geometric morphometrics, classic morphometrics and the distribution of certain nuclear DNA markers. The lip shapes from Arctic Dactylorhiza samples occupied an intermediate position between D. maculata and D. fuchsii samples from Central Russia, supporting a hybrid origin of 'northern tetraploids'. Lip shapes of the taxonomically controversial allotetraploid D. baltica were found to form a distinct group, with members having definite relationships with diploid D. incarnata samples from the same localities, indicating either their local origin or introgression with D. incarnata . In addition to demonstrating the value of geometric morphometric methods in studies of plant taxonomy and hybridization, we suggest future applications designed to explore pollinator-driven directional selection, developmental constraints and fluctuating asymmetry.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 1–12.  相似文献

Molecular study of mitochondrial and nuclear genes and cytogenetic analysis were performed to examine possible patterns of speciation in the diverse Lophuromys flavopunctatus species complex of Ethiopia. Phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA data resulted in an unresolved bush of ten deeply diverged haplotype groups corresponding to potential species either well supported by various types of character or 'cryptic'. The cytogenetic analysis showed representatives of five of these mtDNA lineages to share an identical karyotype (2 n  = 70, NFa = 84), that has not been found previously in Ethiopia. One of them, L.  cf.  sikapusi , being a member of the L. flavopunctatus species complex, demonstrates remarkable morphological similarity to representatives of another species complex, L. sikapusi s.l ., which might be considered as a result of convergent evolution in analogous environments. Analysis of RAPD data suggests that at least two mtDNA types might have been subject to interspecific transfer due to hybridization. In the case of two sympatric haplotypes of L. brunneus we may assume that the contemporary pattern of variation between them can be explained by relatively recent hybridization with another distinct species, L. flavopunctatus . The formation of two groups belonging to distinct mitochondrial lineages within northern populations could be associated with more complex processes including ancient hybridization.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 301–316.  相似文献
