1. Poikilothermic animals incorporate more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into their cellular membranes as temperature declines, suggesting an increased sensitivity to PUFA limitation in cool conditions. To test this we raised Daphnia magna at different temperatures and investigated the effect of varying dietary PUFA on life history parameters (i.e. growth, reproduction) and the PUFA composition of body tissue and eggs. 2. Upon a PUFA‐rich diet (Cryptomonas sp.) females showed higher concentrations of several ω3 PUFAs in their body tissue at 15 °C than at 20 °C and 25 °C, indicating a greater structural requirement for ω3 PUFAs at low temperature. Their eggs had an equal but higher concentration of ω3 PUFAs than their body tissue. 3. In a life history experiment at 15 and 20 °C we supplemented a diet of a PUFA‐free cyanobacterium with the ω3 PUFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The growth of D. magna was more strongly EPA limited at low temperature. A greater requirement for structural EPA at 15 °C was indicated by a steeper increase in somatic EPA content with dietary EPA compared to 20 °C. 4. At 20 °C the development of eggs to successful hatching was high when EPA was supplied to the mothers. At 15 °C the hatching success was generally poor, despite of a higher maternal provision of EPA to eggs, compared to that at 20 °C, suggesting that EPA alone was insufficient for proper neonatal development at the low temperature. The growth of offspring from mothers raised at 20 °C without EPA supplementation was very low, indicating that the negative effects of EPA deficiency can be carried on to the next generation. 5. The fatty acid composition of Daphnia sp. in published field studies shows increasing proportions of saturated fatty acids with increasing environmental temperature, whereas ω3 PUFAs and EPA show no clear pattern, suggesting that variations in dietary PUFA may mask temperature‐dependent adjustments in ω3 PUFA concentrations of cladocerans in nature.  相似文献

An 18 months' growth analysis of three citrus rootstocks revealedconsiderable differences in absolute and relative growth-ratesand in the allometric growth of leaf, stem, thorn, and root. Over the whole period the order of the average absolute growth-rateswas citrange > sinensis > trifoliata, and of the relativegrowth-rates citrange > sinensis = trifoliata. Although sinensisachieved the highest R.G.R. this was maintained over a shortperiod only. Sinensis had relatively most leaf, trifoliata moststem, and citrange most root. The deciduousness of trifoliataproduced only an intermittent deviation in the allometric line,the leaf proportion returning to the average course within afew weeks of the start of spring growth. The time course of these changes was not sufficiently regularfor phases of maximum growth to be characterized. During thewinter period of minimum growth there was a loss in weight ofthe roots (in sinensis, and trifoliata) and stem (citrange).  相似文献

Abstract. The effectiveness of bednets and curtains (nylon mesh 64 per cm2) impregnated with deltamethrin at 26 mg a.i./m2 in reducing the biting nuisance caused by three phlebotomine sandfly species: Lutzomyia columbiana, Lu. lichyi and the predominant Lu. youngi (Diptera: Psychodidae), was evaluated at La Guaira, a rural settlement in Valle de Cauca near Cali, Colombia.
Pairs of volunteers collected sandflies under impregnated bednets, in rooms protected by impregnated curtains or in unprotected rooms in a randomized matched design. Collections were made in three houses per night on three consecutive nights, so that each house was sampled under each of the three treatments. This routine was repeated at 2-week intervals for 6 months. There was no significant difference between the overall numbers of sandflies collected in rooms with or without impregnated curtains. Only 0.14 sandflies/man-hour were caught on human bait under impregnated bednets, significantly fewer than the numbers collected on human bait outside the nets in the same room (1.91) or in unprotected rooms (3.29).
In a second set of experiments carried out in La Guaira and the neighbouring community of Jiguales, the effect of deltamethrin impregnation was evaluated by comparing numbers of sandflies collected on human bait under treated and untreated nets. Significantly fewer were collected under the impregnated nets (0.25 v. 0.69/man-hour). Wild-caught female Lu. youngi exposed to treated netting for 2 min in the laboratory all died with 24 h. The impact of deltamethrin-impregnated bednets was considered to be useful against Lu. youngi and other potential vectors of leishmaniasis in such communities.  相似文献

1. We examined an important ecophysiological link between the mixotrophic flagellate Chlamydomonas acidophila and its consumers, the rotifers Elosa worallii, Cephalodella sp. and Brachionus sericus , by comparing their fatty acid profiles.
2. The mixotrophic flagellate was grown under either exclusively autotrophic conditions in the light, under exclusively heterotrophic conditions in the dark with an organic carbon source (glucose), or in the light plus the organic carbon sources (=mixotrophic).
3. Under heterotrophic growth conditions, C. acidophila strongly reduced its content of the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3) compared with auto- and mixotrophic growth conditions. Although PUFAs with more than 18 carbon atoms were not detected in C . acidophila , significant amounts of eicosatetraenoic (ETA, 20:4n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n- 3 ) were found in three rotifer consumers.
4. Species-specific differences in the fatty acid profiles with respect to ETA, EPA and the precursor ALA were found in the rotifers: Brachionus and Cephalodella fed on the heterotrophic diets synthesised less EPA. In Elosa , smaller amounts of ALA were detected but were converted efficiently to a constant content of EPA and to an exceptionally high content of ETA.
5. Since in nature the mode of carbon assimilation among mixotrophic organisms differs, and their fatty acid composition varies depending on their mode of carbon assimilation, the availability of ALA might be critical for their consumers. An insufficient dietary supply of this precursor for the synthesis of ETA and EPA can prevent consumers from regulating their content of ETA and EPA. Therefore, observed differences in values of the latter might underly species-specific differences in the competitive capability of consumers.  相似文献

In studies of phylogeography and taxonomy, strong emphasis is usually placed on the study of mitochondrial (mt)DNA. In the present study, we present a remarkable case in which highly phenotypically divergent species have almost no divergence in mtDNA. Yellowhammers ( Emberiza citrinella Linnaeus) and pine buntings ( Emberiza leucocephalos S. G. Gmelin) differ noticeably in appearance and song but hybridize in some areas of contact. They share a variety of closely-related mtDNA haplotypes, with little divergence in frequencies, indicating a mitochondrial divergence time sometime during or after the last major glacial period. By contrast, nuclear DNA (amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and CHD1Z gene sequences) differs more strongly between the species, and these differences can be used to identify intermediate genetic signatures of hybrids. The combined amount of mitochondrial diversity within yellowhammers and pine buntings is very low compared to other Emberiza species pairs, whereas the level of variation at the nuclear gene CHD1Z is comparable to that within other species pairs. Although it is difficult to completely reject the possibility that the two species split extremely recently and experienced rapid nuclear and phenotypic differentiation, we argue that the evidence better supports another possibility: the two species are older and mtDNA has recently introgressed between them, most likely as a result of a selective sweep. Mismatches between mitochondrial and nuclear phylogeographic patterns may occur more commonly than previously considered, and could have important implications for the fields of phylogeography and taxonomy.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 422–438.  相似文献

During the last two decades, free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) studies have been conducted to study the effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations on ecosystems. The distances between fumigated and control plots differ widely among those projects, but no experimental data are available how far into the surrounding area an effect of CO2 fumigation can be detected. As the CO2 gas added to the fumigated plots has a different 13C label than ambient atmospheric CO2, its carbon can be traced into plants and soil organic matter (SOM). The Swiss FACE in Eschikon had been conducted for 10 years on a grassland site. After it had ended, we analysed soil samples from three transects extending from the plots to the surrounding area for their organic carbon (Corg) content and carbon isotopic signature. We determined the maximum spatial extension to which carbon originating from the fumigation was incorporated into SOM. A budget of the fumigation gas‐derived Corg in the upper 10 cm of the soil showed that approximately 50 kg C were stored within the plots, and an additional 31 kg C were stored in their immediate surroundings up to a distance of 9 m from the gas pipes. The presented approach provides us with a method to determine a posteriori the extension to which the CO2 fumigation treatment contaminated its immediate surroundings during a FACE experiment. In the presented example, this showed that the distances between plots could have been reduced significantly. Although not generalizable to other experimental settings, the finding indicates that optimizing the spatial layout, e.g. by modelling gas dispersion, will be useful when planning future large‐scale FACE infrastructures. Our approach provides a solid basis to test such gas‐dispersion models on existing FACE sites before planning new sites.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Spumochlamys perforata n. sp. and Spumochlamys bryora n. sp. were isolated and described from dry epiphytic moss. The morphology and ultrastructure of both species clearly demonstrate that they belong to the genus Spumochlamys (family Microchlamyiidae). They differ from its only described member, Spumochlamys iliensis (as well as from species of Microchlamys ), in the relief of the dorsal surface of the test, revealed by scanning electron microscopy, which can represent a good characteristic for species identification. They also differ in the structure of the dorsal part of the test wall (especially S. perforata ). Small subunit ribosomal DNA-based molecular phylogenetic analyses show that Spumochlamys is a deeply branching lineage of the Arcellinida, without any close affinities. Actin gene sequence analysis places this genus within the Tubulinea, close to two other arcellinid lineages but without forming a monophyletic group with them. These data together strongly suggest that the lack of resolution in the arcellinid molecular phylogenies is due to serious undersampling of taxa, a limited number of sequence data, and high divergence rates in most of the species.  相似文献
