Although forest loss is still a problem worldwide, estimated rates of deforestation have declined in the last decade, primarily because of an increase in the area of tree plantations. This leads to the central question of how suitable plantations are for indigenous species. Native plantations are thought to have higher value for biodiversity than plantations of non‐native trees; however, not all studies support this view. We assessed occupancy and density of the araucaria tit spinetail (Leptasthenura setaria, Furnariidae), a near threatened species, in the highly endangered araucaria forests of north‐eastern Argentina and in araucaria plantations, which comprise 90% of the remaining habitat for this species. All natural forest remnants were occupied by araucaria tit spinetails. Only 85% of the plantations were occupied; however, density was almost threefold higher in plantations compared with natural forests. Our models indicated that stand age was the most important factor in determining occupancy and density of this bird species in plantations. Plantations <10 years old exhibited lower densities than older plantations. This species does not occur in plantations of non‐native trees, but our results indicate that native plantations may provide important habitat for the araucaria tit spinetail, particularly given that most native forest has been removed. Restoration of natural remnants and conservation of old, connected plantations may assure the protection of significant populations of spinetails. The role of native araucaria plantations as habitat for other species merits further examination.  相似文献

The karstic nature of the Yucatan Peninsula promotes the formation of submerged caves and sinkholes that are inhabited by an endemic subterranean water fauna. By contrast with most other micro‐endemic stygobitic species, the freshwater palaemonid shrimp Creaseria morleyi is widely distributed across the northern part of the peninsula. In the present study, we investigated the phylogeographic structure of C. morleyi using two mitochondrial genes as markers, and explored hypotheses related to its evolution in the peninsula. DNA from 14 localities was extracted, and the 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) genes were amplified and sequenced. The different haplotypes were identified to construct a haplotype network and perform a nested clade analysis. Five haplotypes of the 16S gene were obtained, with a maximum divergence of 0.5%. One of these haplotypes is widely distributed and the most divergent is located in the north‐western section of the peninsula. Twelve haplotypes for the COI gene were found with a maximum divergence of 2%, showing the same spatial pattern. The analysis revealed two significantly different clades corresponding to populations in the centre and south‐east of the peninsula as a consequence of restricted genetic flow with isolation‐by‐distance. The divergence time of these two clades was 40–120 thousand years. The genetic variation in C. morleyi, the relationship between haplotypes and their geographic distribution, along with the geological history of the Yucatan Peninsula, may indicate that this variation is a relict of an ancient marked genetic structure reduced by changes in sea level that resulted in a series of bottlenecks. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 315–325.  相似文献

1. Interspecific competition among hymenopteran parasitoids may shape their behavioural strategies for host resource exploitation. In order to reduce or prevent competition, many parasitoid species have evolved the ability to discriminate between unparasitised hosts and hosts parasitised by another parasitoid species (i.e. heterospecific host discrimination). However, discriminatory ability might be affected by host instar. 2. This study reports the first results on whether host instar can influence the use of heterospecific‐parasitised hosts by sympatric parasitoids of the genus Aphytis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). 3. Aphytis melinus and Aphytis chrysomphali discriminated between unparasitised and heterospecific‐parasitised hosts when they found a third‐instar host (high quality), with a tendency to multi‐parasitise. However, this discrimination was not observed in the second instar (lower size). 4. The behavioural strategies adopted towards multi‐parasitise third‐instar hosts varied between both species. Aphytis chrysomphali reduced its clutch size in heterospecific‐parasitised hosts, whereas A. melinus tended to probe them for longer than healthy hosts. 5. Overall, our results highlight the importance of host instar in the study of intrinsic competition between parasitoids.  相似文献
