Plantago lanceolata L. and Trifolium repens L. were grown for 16 wk in ambient (360 μmol mol−1) and elevated (610 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2. Plants were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe and given a phosphorus supply in the form of bonemeal, which would not be immediately available to the plants. Seven sequential harvests were taken to determine whether the effect of elevated CO2 on mycorrhizal colonization was independent of the effect of CO2 on plant growth. Plant growth analysis showed that both species grew faster in elevated CO2 and that P. lanceolata had increased carbon allocation towards the roots. Elevated CO2 did not affect the percentage of root length colonized (RLC); although total colonized root length was greater, when plant size was taken into account this effect disappeared. This finding was also true for root length colonized by arbuscules. No CO2 effect was found on hyphal density (colonization intensity) in roots. The P content of plants was increased at elevated CO2, although both shoot and root tissue P concentration were unchanged. This was again as a result of bigger plants at elevated CO2. Phosphorus inflow was unaffected by CO2 concentrations. It is concluded that there is no direct permanent effect of elevated CO2 on mycorrhizal functioning, as internal mycorrhizal development and the mycorrhizal P uptake mechanism are unaffected. The importance of sequential harvests in experiments is discussed. The direction for future research is highlighted, especially in relation to C storage in the soil.  相似文献

The architecture of a tree root system may influence its abilityto withstand uprooting by wind loading. To determine how theroot branching pattern may alter the anchorage efficiency ofa tree, artificial model root systems with different topologiesand branching angles were built. The root systems were embeddedat various depths in wet sand and the pull-out resistance measured.A model to predict the uprooting resistance from the data collectedwas designed, allowing predictions of anchorage strength withregards to architecture. The dominant factors influencing pull-outresistance were the depth and length of roots in the soil. Themost efficient type of branching pattern predicted by the programwas one with an increased number of roots deep in the soil.The optimum branching angle most likely to resist pull-out isa vertical angle of 90° between a lateral and the main axis.The predicted mechanically optimal radial angle between a lateralbranch and its daughter is between 0 and 20°. Values ofbranching angle are compared with those measured in real woodyroot systems of European larch and Sitka spruce. Accurate disease diagnosis and precise identification of any pathogens involved is an essential prerequisite for understanding plant diseases and controlling them effectively. Traditional methods of identifying plant pathogens can be slow and inconclusive, and this has prompted the search for alternative diagnostic techniques. Here, we review recent developments in antibody-based and nucleic acid-based diagnostic methods, and their applications in plant pathology. We also highlight some new developments in diagnostics that are likely to make an impact in the future.  相似文献

Most work on root proliferation to a localized nutrient supply has ignored the possible role of mycorrhizal fungi, despite their key role in nutrient acquisition. Interactions between roots of Plantago lanceolata , an added arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) inoculum and nitrogen capture from an organic patch ( Lolium perenne shoot material) dual-labelled with 15N and 13C were investigated, to determine whether root proliferation and nitrogen (N) capture was affected by the presence of AM fungi. Decomposition of the organic patch in the presence and absence of roots peaked in all treatments at day 3, as shown by the amounts of 13CO2 detected in the soil atmosphere. Plant N concentrations were higher in the treatments with added inoculum 10 d after patch addition, but thereafter did not differ among treatments. Plant phosphorus concentrations at the end of the experiment were depressed by the addition of the organic residue in the absence of mycorrhizal inoculum. Although uninoculated plants were also colonized by mycorrhizal fungi, colonization was enhanced at all times by the added inoculum. Addition of the AM inoculum increased root production, observed in situ by the use of minirhizotron tubes, most pronouncedly within the organic patch zone. Patch N capture by the end of the experiment was c . 7.5% and was not significantly different as a result of adding an AM inoculum. Furthermore, no 13C enrichments were detected in the plant material in any of the treatments showing that intact organic compounds were not taken up. Thus, although the added AM fungal inoculum benefited P. lanceolata seedlings in terms of P concentrations of tissues it did not increase total N capture or affect the form in which N was captured by P. lanceolata roots.  相似文献

Ten turfgrass cultivars were grown, singly and in mixtures, in glasshouse culture, to create standard sods. The tearing strength of the sods was measured using an Instron Universal Testing Instrument. Two Poa cultivars were found to be the strongest, followed in order of decreasing strength by three Festuca cultivars, three Lolium cultivars and two Agrostis cultivars. The relationship between the values obtained and shear strength of the sod root mass was investigated with a view to using this latter measurement as an indicator of tearing strength. No correlation between the two was found. Various characteristics of the root mass of individual plants were examined in an attempt to account for differences in turf strength: root system architecture (magnitude, altitude, pathlength and link numbers and lengths), root numbers at different soil depths and root mass. Sod tearing strength was found to be very strongly inversely related to the interior link length and mass of roots. The use of these as indices of strength is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Seed production in the endemic New Zealand mistletoe Peraxilla tetrapetala (Loranthaceae) has been shown to be consistently pollen limited, but to date there has been no test of whether the species is also seed limited. If it is not seed limited, then pollen limitation may have no effect on population size. We tested for seed limitation by sowing seeds onto host trees at high and low densities at two sites, and following survival for up to 69 months. Our rationale was that unless there is strong density‐dependent seedling mortality sufficient to negate increases in seed supply, the species would be seed limited. We simultaneously measured pollen limitation at both sites using pollen augmentation. Peraxilla tetrapetala was strongly pollen limited at both sites over 7 years at Ohau (mean Pollen Limitation Index 0.62), and 12 years at Craigieburn (mean PLI 0.44), before and during the seed‐limitation study. There was no significant overall negative effect of density on survival in sown P. tetrapetala seeds over 42–69 months. There was a significant positive effect: seeds were more likely to adhere to branches when sown at high densities. This initial advantage to high‐density seeds was gradually eroded by slightly (but non‐significantly) lower survival rates of adhered seeds at high density. By the end of the study there was no significant difference in overall survival in high and low density plantings. This means that P. tetrapetala was apparently both pollen limited and seed limited at both our sites. Hence, reduced densities of native bird pollinators caused by introduced mammalian carnivores are likely to reduce the density of adult mistletoes in the next generation. However, the generality of this result may be affected by the fact that mistletoes do not have a dense ‘seedling shadow’ under the parent mistletoe.  相似文献

A population of hybridizing Epilobium in a clearing in fen carr was observed for two years. Traditional and statistical techniques were used to identify hybrids, of which there appeared to be three, involving three parents. The identified hybrids showed correlation in abundance with that of their parents and with the successional status of the vegetation. Even what purported to be a pure E. obscurum population showed characteristics of E. palustre , suggesting a hybrid swarm, but there was evidence that selection was gradually restoring the population to its presumed pre-clearance state.  相似文献
