Of the many mechanisms by which global climate change may alter ecosystem processes perhaps the least known and insidious is altered disturbance regimes. We used a field-based experiment to examine the climate change scenario of more frequent fires with altered invertebrate assemblages on the decomposition of Eucalyptus leaves. Our design comprised three fire regimes [long-term fire exclusion (FE), long-term frequent burning (FB) and FE altered to FB (FEFB)] and two litter bag mesh sizes (8.0 and 0.2 mm) that either permitted or denied access to the leaf litter by most invertebrates. We found a significant interaction effect between fire regime and mesh size in losses of litter mass and net carbon (C). Compared with the regime of FE, with more frequent burning (FB and FEFB) the pace of decomposition was slowed by 41% (when access to litter by most invertebrates is not impeded). For the regime of FE, denying access to leaf litter by most invertebrates did not alter the pace of decomposition. Conversely, under regimes of frequently burning, restricting access to the litter by most invertebrates altered the pace of decomposition by 46%. Similar results were found for net C. For net losses of nitrogen (N), no interaction effects between fire regime and mesh size were detected, although both main effects were significant. Our results show that by modifying disturbance regimes such as fire frequency, global climate change has the potential to modify the mechanism by which ecosystems function. With more FB, decomposition is driven not only by fire regime induced changes in substrate quality and/or physiochemical conditions but through the interaction of disturbance regime with animal assemblages mediating ecosystem processes.  相似文献

Cyanide assimilation by the β‐cyanoalanine pathway produces asparagine, aspartate and ammonium, allowing cyanide to serve as alternate or supplemental source of nitrogen. Experiments with wheat and sorghum examined the enrichment of 15N from cyanide as a function of external cyanide concentration in the presence or absence of nitrate and/or ammonium. Cyanogenic nitrogen became enriched in plant tissues following exposure to 15N‐cyanide concentrations from 5 to 200 µm , but when exposure occurred in the absence of nitrate and ammonium, 15N enrichment increased significantly in sorghum shoots at solution cyanide concentrations of ≥50 µm and in wheat roots at 200 µm cyanide. In an experiment with sorghum using 13C15N, there was also a significant difference in the tissue 13C:15N ratio, suggestive of differential metabolism and transport of carbon and nitrogen under nitrogen‐free conditions. A reciprocal 15N labelling study using KC15N and 15NH4+ and wheat demonstrated an interaction between cyanide and ammonium in roots in which increasing solution ammonium concentrations decreased the enrichment from 100 µm cyanide. In contrast, with increasing solution cyanide concentrations there was an increase in the enrichment from ammonium. The results suggest increased transport and assimilation of cyanide in response to decreased nitrogen supply and perhaps to ammonium supply.  相似文献

Comparisons were made among Douglas‐fir forest, aspen (broad leaf deciduous) forest and wheatgrass (C3) grassland for ecosystem‐level water‐use efficiency (WUE). WUE was defined as the ratio of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate and evapotranspiration (ET) rate. The ET data measured by eddy covariance were screened so that they overwhelmingly represented transpiration. The three sites used in this comparison spanned a range of vegetation (plant functional) types and environmental conditions within western Canada. When compared in the relative order Douglas‐fir (located on Vancouver Island, BC), aspen (northern Saskatchewan), grassland (southern Alberta), the sites demonstrated a progressive decline in precipitation and a general increase in maximum air temperature and atmospheric saturation deficit (Dmax) during the mid‐summer. The average (±SD) WUE at the grassland site was 2.6±0.7 mmol mol?1, which was much lower than the average values observed for the two other sites (aspen: 5.4±2.3, Douglas‐fir: 8.1±2.4). The differences in WUE among sites were primarily because of variation in ET. The highest maximum ET rates were approximately 5, 3.2 and 2.7 mm day?1 for the grassland, aspen and Douglas‐fir sites, respectively. There was a strong negative correlation between WUE and Dmax for all sites. We also made seasonal measurements of the carbon isotope ratio of ecosystem respired CO2 (δR) in order to test for the expected correlation between shifts in environmental conditions and changes to the ecosystem‐integrated ratio of leaf intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (ci/ca). There was a consistent increase in δR values in the grassland, aspen forest and Douglas‐fir forest associated with a seasonal reduction in soil moisture. Comparisons were made between WUE measured using eddy covariance with that calculated based on D and δR measurements. There was excellent agreement between WUE values calculated using the two techniques. Our δR measurements indicated that ci/ca values were quite similar among the Douglas‐fir, aspen and grassland sites, despite large variation in environmental conditions among sites. This implied that the shorter‐lived grass species had relatively high ci/ca values for the D of their habitat. By contrast, the longer‐lived Douglas‐fir trees were more conservative in water‐use with lower ci/ca values relative to their habitat D. This illustrates the interaction between biological and environmental characteristics influencing ecosystem‐level WUE. The strong correlation we observed between the two independent measurements of WUE, indicates that the stable isotope composition of respired CO2 is a useful ecosystem‐scale tool to help study constraints to photosynthesis and acclimation of ecosystems to environmental stress.  相似文献

Tamarix ramosissima and Tamarix chinensis are invasive weed species in western North America. Previous studies based on single locus DNA sequence data revealed some information about the invasion process, but multilocus markers can provide additional information about levels of introgression and genotype origins. We have developed primers that amplify 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci from T. ramosissima; these primer pairs also successfully amplify polymorphic microsatellites from the closely related T. chinensis, a species that forms hybrids with T. ramosissima in the western USA.  相似文献

1. Broad‐scale assessments of biodiversity often rely on the use of surrogate taxa, whose reliability has rarely been tested, particularly in freshwater systems. Here we use data from 46 ponds in two regions of the U.K. to explore the performance of macroinvertebrate taxa as surrogates for the rapid assessment of pond biodiversity. For the four dominant taxonomic groups in these ponds (Chironomidae, Coleoptera, Gastropoda and Trichoptera) we explore cross‐taxon species richness relationships in each of the two regions, and also determine the degree of concordance between the different taxa in accurately representing the similarity relationships between pond assemblages. 2. Patterns of cross‐taxon congruence in species richness were highly variable among taxa and study sites, making the use of a single taxon as a predictor of overall macroinvertebrate species richness problematic. In contrast, all four taxa show >70% congruence with the pattern of community similarity between sites resulting from the entire macroinvertebrate dataset, this result being consistent within and between regions. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that all taxa were related in a similar manner to measured environmental parameters, meaning that limited additional ecological information is gained by including a wider range of pond taxa in rapid site assessment. 3. Single taxonomic groups can, therefore, perform consistently as indicators of community similarity between ponds, and no one taxon dramatically outperforms any other in this respect. The relative merits of the four focal taxa as surrogates for pond invertebrate assemblage composition are discussed with reference to ease of survey, ease of identification and ecological range occupied. 4. It is suggested that Coleoptera have a number of advantages as a surrogate taxon, being diverse, easily sampled, readily identified, taxonomically stable, ecologically well understood and occurring across a wide spectrum of pond types. They are therefore recommended for use as a focal group in rapid pond biodiversity assessments, employing an approach such as ours, which examines patterns of assemblage similarity, rather than species richness alone.  相似文献

Amongst raptor species, individuals with specialized diets are commonly observed to have higher reproductive output than those with general diets. A suggested cause is that foraging efficiency benefits accrue to diet specialists. This diet specificity hypothesis thus predicts that diet breadth and reproductive success should be inversely related within species. We highlight, however, that a prey availability hypothesis also makes the same prediction in some circumstances. Hence, when high diet specificity results from high encounter rates with an abundant, preferred prey, then prey availability may affect reproductive success, with diet specialization as an incidental correlate. Using three insular study areas in western Scotland, we examine diet specificity and reproductive success in Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos. Diet breadth and breeding productivity were not negatively related in any of our study areas, even though birds with specific diets did tend to have a higher incidence of preferred prey (grouse and lagomorphs) in the diet. Indeed, in two study areas there was evidence that diet generalists had higher breeding productivity. Our results therefore failed to support the diet specificity hypothesis but were consistent with the prey availability hypothesis. We highlight that although many other studies are superficially consistent with the diet specificity hypothesis, our study is not alone in failing to provide support and that the hypothesis does not provide a generic explanation for all relevant results. Diet specificity in predators can be at least partially a response to prey diversity, availability and distribution, and benefits associated with different prey types, so that being a generalist is not necessarily intrinsically disadvantageous. We suggest that the available evidence is more consistent with variation in prey abundance and availability as a more influential factor explaining spatial and temporal variation in breeding productivity of ‘generalist’ species such as the Golden Eagle. Under this argument, prey abundance and availability are the main drivers of variation in reproductive output. Diet specificity is a consequence of variation in prey availability, rather than a substantial cause of variation in reproductive success.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of two populations of Helix aspersawith different histories of exposure to lead was assessed bytheir egg production, hatching success and the metal contentof the eggs. By using laboratory-bred parents raised in a Pb-freeenvironment, the possibility of an inherited response to a highPb exposure was assessed. Following a period of dormancy, six individuals in each population werepaired for copulation and allowed to oviposit. During this time theywere fed a diet with 500 µg.g-1 Pb, for a total of 14days. After oviposition, the egg mass from each pairing was weighed,counted and samples analysed. Metal concentrations in four tissuefractions of the parents (shell, hepatopancreas, reproductive systemand rest9) were also analysed. There was no significant transfer of Pb to the eggs in either population.There were differences in their egg massesthe population froman uncontaminated site, Rottingdean (RD), laid, on average,twice the number of eggs of the snails from Minera (MI), a contaminatedsite in North Wales. However the latter had a higher averagepercentage emergence (90% compared to 55% for RD). There wasalso considerable hatching asynchrony in the RD offspring, whilehatching within each MI egg mass was completed within two days.This is discussed in relation to the Ca status of the parentand possible differences in reproductive strategy between thetwo populations. The morphology and small subunit rRNA (SSrRNA) gene sequence of a marine oligotrich ciliate, Williophrya maedai gen. nov., sp. nov., are reported. The new genus Williophrya is characterized by the adoral zone with no differentiation of membranelles, and the reduced somatic ciliature which comprises a bipartite girdle kinety only. In addition, the in vivo morphologies of two other oligotrichs, namely Strombidium basimorphum Martin & Montagnes, 1993 and Pseudotontonia simplicidens (Lynn & Gilron, 1993 Lynn, D. H. and Gilron, G. L. 1993. Strombidiid ciliates from coastal waters near Kingston Harbour, Jamaica (Ciliophora, Oligotrichia, Strombidiidae). Improved diagnoses of both species are supplied. The phylogenetic position of Williophrya maedai is investigated based on SSrRNA gene sequence data. These show that: (1) Williophrya maedai is most closely related to Strombidium purpureum and S. apolatum; (2) Williophrya is assigned to the family Strombidiidae although it has some unique morphological features regarding its oral and somatic ciliatures.  相似文献

Abstract: Early and early Middle Ordovician crinoids are rare globally, and are best known from North America and the British Isles. The first Arenig crinoid from the Arabian Peninsula is Iocrinus sp. cf. I. subcrassus (Meek and Worthen), known from two near‐complete individuals, and numerous fragmentary specimens and ossicles. These are the stratigraphically oldest Iocrinus specimens, and provide an unexpected extension of the palaeogeographical range of a genus known otherwise from slightly younger deposits in Laurentia (North America) and Avalonia (Wales). The Oman specimens differ from Gondwanan Heviacrinus melendezi Gil Cid et al., currently classified as a maennilicrinid, but morphologically close to Iocrinus, in having arms that branch at least seven times instead of four and in having columnals typical of Iocrinus. Three species from Wales and the Welsh Borders, previously placed in Iocrinus, but differing in having smooth, conical dorsal cups, are reclassified as Margoiocrinus Donovan gen. nov., type species Iocrinus shelvensis Ramsbottom.  相似文献
