The genus Cornulites, with the type species C. serpularius Schlotheim, 1820, from the Silurian of Gotland, comprises annulated, conical or tubular calcite shells, often found attached to the hard parts of other organisms. No consensus has ever been reached over the zoological affinities of the taxon, and no examples of soft‐part preservation are known: detailed examination of shell structures and growth patterns provide the only means of assessing its systematic position. Using transverse and longitudinal thin sections of C. serpularius Vine, 1882, and C. cellulosus sp. nov. , from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of England, the shell structure of Cornulites is shown to be lamellar, but with conspicuous internal chambers (camerae) at the apical end of the shell and, particularly in C. cellulosus, numerous smaller vacuities (cellulae) between the lamellae in the apertural shell region. Growth of the shell was by the secretion of low‐magnesian calcite increments within one another, giving a cone‐in‐cone structure, with the prominent development of cellulae in C. cellulosus probably a constructional feature relating to an upright life position. By comparison of morphology and shell structure with other taxa, the zoological affinities of Cornulites are re‐examined; previously suggested affinities with annelids, foraminifers, molluscs and poriferans can be ruled out. Specific shell structures, most notably pseudopuncta similar to those of bryozoans and brachiopods, have led some recent workers to interpret cornulitids as lophophorates. However, it is shown that they can be interpreted alternatively as solitary, aseptate members of the stem‐Zoantharia (Cnidaria: Anthozoa). Four cornulitid species are recognized in the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation: C. cellulosus sp. nov. , C. gremialis sp. nov. , C. scalariformis and C. serpularius. Abstract:  The Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of the Dudley inliers, West Midlands, contains one of the world's richest and most exquisitely preserved Silurian marine biotas. However, for most museum specimens, little is known of their exact provenance and mode of preservation. Detailed comparisons between outcrops and museum collections allow the identification of five faunal-lithological associations and numerous horizons of exceptional skeletal preservation. The associations are interpreted as a series of transient carbonate mid-platform environments extending from below storm wave-base to above fair-weather wave-base. Erosive surfaces, condensed sections, flooding surfaces and the stacking patterns of genetically related bed-sets (parasequences) have allowed the formation to be interpreted as a single third-order sequence stratigraphic cycle of sea-level change. The articulated preservation of taxa such as pelmatozoan echinoderms and trilobites can be attributed to either rapid burial by obrution deposits close to fair-weather wave-base or smothering by storm sequestered muds in slightly deeper-water settings. Such intervals of exceptional preservation are commonly associated with flooding surfaces, presumably reflecting reduced likelihood of reworking once rapid burial had taken place.  相似文献

The relationship between diversity of large trees and altitude was investigated in a Tanzanian tropical rain forest. In total, 231 samples of 20 trees of ≥ 20 cm d.b.h. from the East and West Usambara mountains, covering an elevation range from 280 m to 2180 m a.s.l., were analysed. An ordination demonstrated a constant turnover of species, genera, family and orders with elevation. There were no obvious zones or discontinuities. There was no decline in plot richness with respect to altitude for species, genera or orders. Family richness was shown to increase with altitude. A measure of genetic diversity, the avalanche index, was calculated for each plot to investigate the effect of incorporating phylogenetic relatedness of individuals into the diversity measure. Distances between taxa were extracted from a recent molecular phylogeny of the angiosperms. Habitat conditions mediate the effects of climate, so neighboring populations with differing habitat conditions may differ in their responses to climate change. We have previously observed that juvenile survival in Snake River spring/summer Chinook salmon is strongly correlated with summer temperature in some populations and with fall streamflow in others. Here, we explore potential differential responses of the viability of four of these populations to changes in streamflow and temperature that might result from climate change. First, we linked predicted changes in air temperature and precipitation from several General Circulation Models to a local hydrological model to project streamflow and air temperature under two climate‐change scenarios. Then, we developed a stochastic, density‐dependent life‐cycle model with independent environmental effects in juvenile and ocean stages, and parameterized the model for each population. We found that mean abundance decreased 20–50% and the probability of quasi‐extinction increased dramatically (from 0.1–0.4 to 0.3–0.9) for all populations in both scenarios. Differences between populations were greater in the more moderate climate scenario than in the more extreme, hot/dry scenario. Model results were relatively robust to realistic uncertainty in freshwater survival parameters in all scenarios. Our results demonstrate that detailed population models can usefully incorporate climate‐change predictions, and that global warming poses a direct threat to freshwater stages in these fish, increasing their risk of extinction. Because differences in habitat may contribute to the individualistic population responses we observed, we infer that maintaining habitat diversity will help buffer some species from the impacts of climate change.  相似文献

GENETIC analysis of conditional lethal mutants of Qβ, a small RNA-containing bacteriophage of Escherichia coli, has demonstrated the existence of three cistrons1. These have been correlated2 with three of the four phage-specific proteins observed after Qβ infection2–4: gene 1 codes for the phage-specific subunit of Qβ replicase, gene 2 for the maturation protein and gene 3 for the major coat protein. Using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to characterize these polypeptides, Garwes et al. introduced the nomenclature I, IIa and III for the phage-specific proteins3; the corresponding molecular weights are 64,000, 41,000 and 14,000.  相似文献

The taxonomic and genetic relationship of the two nominal species of catadromous Atlantic eel poses the question whether or not each eel species has one independent and recognizable gene pool. The positive answer to this question is reinforced by comparing the isoelectric points of muscle proteins in samples of eels from two freshwater sources, one in Nova Scotia, Canada, the other in East Anglia, England. Museum collections are rich repositories of information. The specimens and the data they bear continue to provide new insights into ornithology and biological processes decades or even centuries after they were collected. The benefits to be gained from museum collections depend implicitly upon the accuracy of the information associated with the specimens and the correct interpretation of those data (Parkes 1989, Knox & Walters 1992). Collectors and dealers have often been suspected of fabricating data for a variety of reasons, but proven cases have been documented only rarely (e.g. Nicholson & Ferguson-Lees 1962).   • 1 Macroinvertebrates were sampled in the riffles of fifty-eight streams from three regions of the Himalaya (Anapurna, Langtang and Everest) in Nepal. A semi-quantitative method with identification to family level was used to describe communities on-site.
  • 2 Stream physicochemistry was assessed and the community structure of macroinvertebrates was related to chemistry, physiography (substratum composition, altitude and size), geographical location and the dominant land use in each catchment (terraced agriculture, forest or scrub). Community data were analysed by ordination (DECORANA) and classification (TWINSPAN).
  • 3 The concentration of cations in stream water decreased significantly with altitude. Chemistry also differed between regions; sites from Anapurna had a higher pH and conductivity than those in the other two areas.
  • 4 Communities were dominated by aquatic insect larvae, with Ephemeroptera, in particular the Baetidae, most numerous across sites.
  • 5 There were, nevertheless, differences in community structure between sites, which were related closely to stream physicochemistry. Ordination scores were strongly correlated with altitude, magnesium concentration and substratum composition. Classification was also linked to altitude and chemistry, differentiating high-altitude sites with low silica concentrations from others. Sites from the Anapurna and Everest regions, with their contrasting chemistry, were also separated.
  • 6 Community structure was also related to land use: streams draining catchments dominated by terraced agriculture had different communities from those in scrub or forest. This result was confounded, however, by the strong relationship between land use, altitude and chemistry; sites in terracing were at lower altitude, had higher concentrations of silica and a higher proportion of fine sediments than those in the other land-use types.
  • 7 Overall, our data indicate that natural features of the relief and geology in the Himalaya create strong gradients in their invertebrate faunas, but that activities of man may have an effect on stream structure and ecology through catchment management.

1. The retention characteristics of two moorland streams in mid-Wales were manipulated for 2 years by the addition of small traps which accumulated detritus. Leaf litter was also added to these essentially treeless streams at regular intervals to simulate natural inputs to a woodland stream. 2. Leaf traps retained a significantly higher biomass of detritus - both naturally occurring and added - than either the surrounding stream bed or unmanipulated reference sections. They also supported significantly higher numbers of nemourid, leuctrid, tipulid and elminthid insect larvae. 3. Among functional feeding groups, detritivores and, to a lesser extent, predators responded to increased detritus availability. Numbers of mayfly larvae were low in leaf packs, suggesting a negative effect of detritus aggregations on their numbers. 4. The taxa which responded positively to increased detrital biomass, particularly stonefly larvae, are known to be tolerant of low pH conditions, whereas those affected detrimentally are generally absent from acid waters. It is proposed therefore that increasing detrital inputs and litter retention in culturally acidified upland streams may serve to increase their invertebrate productivity.  相似文献

Abstract. The innervation of the gut of the cockroach Leucophaea madera (F.) has been studied by means of wholemount immunocytochemistry with antisera raised against Leu-callatostatin, a cockroach allatostatin homologue identified from neuropeptide isolation and gene studies in the blowfly Calliphora vomitoria. Leu-callatostatin-imunoreactive neurones in the brain, with axon trajectories in the stomatogastric nervous system, innervate the foregut and midgut. Neurones in the last abdominal ganglion supply the hindgut and the midgut via the proctodeal nerve. In addition to a rich callatostatin-immunoreactive nerve supply, the midgut, including the midgut caeca, contain numerous callatostatin-immunoreactive endocrine cells. Physiological studies show that the spontaneous contractile activities of the foregut, but not the hindgut, are inhibited by callatostatin neuropeptides. Leu-callatostatin 3 was the most potent of the range of Leu-and Met-callatostatins tested, with a dose-dependent response between 10-13 and 10-7 M. This is similar to the results obtained with the previously identified myoinhibitory peptide of L. maderae , leucomyosuppressin. However, this peptide, with a different type of structure to the allatostatins, inhibits both foregut and hindgut motility equally. Experiments with a series of analogues of the Met-callatostatins showed that the free acid (as opposed to the carboxyamidated peptide) and N-terminally truncated peptides were inactive. These morphological and physiological results are thought to be representative of the, as yet unidentified, naturally occurring allatostatin homologues of L. maderae. This family of peptides should be added to the increasing list of insect gut myoinhibitory substances.  相似文献
