In polygynous birds, bright plumage is typically more extensive in the sexually competitive males and develops at or after sexual maturity. These patterns, coupled with the importance of male plumage in sexual displays, fostered the traditional hypothesis that bright plumages and sexual dichromatism develop through the actions of sexual selection on males. This view remains problematic for hummingbirds, all of which are polygynous, because their bright iridescent plumages are also important non-sexual signals associated with dominance at floral nectar sources. Here I show that female amethyst-throated sunangels [ Heliangelus amethysticollis (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye)], moult from an immature plumage with an iridescent gorget to an adult plumage with a non-iridescent gorget. This 'reversed' ontogeny contradicts the notion that iridescent plumage has a sexual function because sexual selection in polygynous birds should be lowest among non-reproductive immature females. Moreover, loss of iridescent plumage in adult females indicates that adult sexual dichromatism in H. amethysticollis is due in large part to changes in female ontogeny. I suggest that both the ontogeny and sexual dichromatism evolved in response to competition for nectar.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We investigate the role of differential activity of chiro-nomids as an explanation for the size selection of small larvae by fish.
2. In the laboratory, pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus L.) selectively consumed large larvae of Chironomus tentans Fab. when no tube-building materials were available. Small larvae were selectively consumed when a mud substrate was provided but there was no difference in predation rates on large and small larvae in sand.
3. Small larvae spent more time out of their tubes than large larvae in the presence of fish, which may explain the selection for small larvae in mud. Large larvae apparently compensated for decreased foraging activity in the presence of fish by increasing activity when fish were absent. Visibility of large larvae inside tubes may account for their increased mortality in sand.
4. Our results suggest that differential activity is important in explaining the size-selective mortality observed in the field.  相似文献

The reproductive interactions of the Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis , a brood parasite, and the Yellow-hooded Blackbird Agelaius icterocephalus , a host of the cowbird, were studied In Trinidad, West Indies. We gathered information on the breeding biology of the Shiny Cowbird and the Yellow-hooded Blackbird, the frequency of use of the host species, and the effects of brood parasitism on host breeding success. Yellow-hooded Blackbirds are polygynous for the most part; males build nests and attempt to attract females to lay in them by means of song and visual displays directed towards the nests. This behaviour probably makes it easy for cowbirds to locate breeding birds and their nests. Cowbird eggs were found in 153 of 377 (40–3 %) blackbird nests located before the nestling stage. Shiny Cowbird parasitism of the Yellow-hooded Blackbird had little negative impact on host reproductive success, whereas predation accounted for the majority of nest failures. Vigilant nest defense by male blackbirds combined with colonial breeding apparently also minimized the extent of host egg damage and removal by cowbirds, and the parasitized and unparasitized nests were equally successful at producing blackbirds. Cowbirds most frequently parasitized the first or only nesting attempts in blackbird territories, and first or only nests were also successful more frequently than subsequent nests.  相似文献

The effects of acidic fog on productivity of celery and lettuce were examined using a portable fogging apparatus to expose field plots to simulated fog episodes. Acidic solutions were formulated to simulate fog reported for southern California. Celery (Apium graveolens var. dulec cv. Bishop) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. Mesa 659) were exposed in separate experiments once or twice each week during crop growth and maturation to 1 - to 2-h of fog at specific acidity levels between pH 1.6 and 3.8. Necrosis occurred as small, irregularly shaped white (celery) or brown (lettuce) lesions on the most exposed portions of the plants. Fog necrosis sufficient to reduce marketability of celery was evident after single exposures at pH 2.4. Although injury occurred on wrapper leaves of lettuce at acidity levels as high as pH 3.4, marketability was reduced from foliar necrosis only after exposure to acidity levels of pH 2.6 or lower. Repeated exposure of lettuce to acidity below pH 2.0 was necessary to reduce yield. The field experiments demonstrated that acidic fog influenced natural incidence of disease. At low pH fog exposure, celery had increased occurrence of basal stalk rot and lettuce exhibited increased bacterial soft rot. Indirect effects of acidic fog on host-pathogen relationships and subsequent crop marketability may be more important than the direct effects of acidic fog exposure on plant tissue.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas), wasintroduced into North America in 1986. Initial North American(N.A.) studies suggested that physiological responses variedbetween N.A. and European populations. However, literature reviewindicates agreement on most aspects of physiological adaptationincluding: respiratory responses; hypoxia/anoxia tolerance;salinity limits; emersion tolerance; freezing resistance; environmentalpH limits; calcium limits; starvation responses; and bioenergeticpartitioning. The main differences among N.A. and European musselsappear to be elevated upper thermal limits and temperaturesfor optimum growth among N.A. populations. N.A. zebra musselsprobably originated from the northern shore of the Black Seain the warmest portion of the mussel's European range. However, most European physiological data come from northern Europe wherepopulations may be adapted to colder temperatures. Alternatively,N.A. research suggests that mussels may have a capacity forseasonal temperature acclimatization such that responses recordedin warmer N.A. waters may be different from those recorded innorthern Europe even after short-term laboratory acclimation.Studies of genetic variation and physiological response amongEuropean and N.A. D. polymorpha populations are required toelucidate the basis for physiological differentiation. Recentlyevolved D. polymorpha has poor resistance adaptations comparedto unionacean and sphaeriid bivalves with longer freshwaterfossil histories. Poor resistance adaptations make it less suitedfor stable habitats, instead, its high fecundities, early maturity, and rapid growth are adaptations to unstable habitats whereextensive resistance adaptations are of little value.  相似文献

Abstract. The orientation of adults of the myiasis species Wohlfahrtia magnified and Lucilia sericata to artificial visual stimuli (cloth targets) and olfactory stimuli ('swormlure-4', a potent screwworm attractant), was studied in sheep pastures near to Sarbogard in Hungary. Experiments with odour-baited cloth targets, enclosed in electrocuting grids, demonstrated that colour was an important factor influencing catches on targets: a black target caught most flies of both species, with other colours in the following order of effectiveness, blue > white > yellow. Wohlfahrtia magnified did not respond to swormlure-4 in the strong manner that L. sericata did. The sex ratios of W. magnifica caught on targets (67.2% males) and hand-netted from fence posts (68.8% males) were similar and biased towards males, whereas that of L. sericata on targets was strongly biased towards females (15.6% males), indicating a fundamental difference in the response of these two myiasis species towards the swormlure-baited targets. The orientation of these two species towards hosts was also recorded together with that of a third species, Phormia regina . Electric nets placed beside infested sheep caught significantly more flies of all three species than those placed beside uninfested sheep or in the absence of sheep. The sex ratio of W. magnified caught around infested sheep was the reverse of that on targets, with 68.5% females. Wohlfahrtia magnifica responded more strongly to healthy, uninfested sheep than did L. sericata and P. regina . The potential for use of targets both for population monitoring and control is discussed.  相似文献

Direct and indirect effects of plant genetic variation on enemy impact   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract.
  • 1 The Tritrophic and Enemy Impact concepts predict that natural enemy impact varies: (a) among plant genotypes and (b) may depend on the abundance of heterospecific herbivores, respectively. I tested these predictions using three herbivore species on potted, cloned genotypes of Salik sericea Marshall in a common garden experiment.
  • 2 Densities of the leaf miner (Phyllonorycter salicifoliella (Chambers)) and two leaf galling sawflies (Phyllocolpa nigrita (Marlatt) and Phyllocolpa eleanorae Smith and Fritz) varied significantly among willow clones, indicating genetic variation in resistance.
  • 3 Survival and natural enemy impact caused by egg and larval parasitoids and/or unknown predators differed significantly among willow clones for each of the three herbivore species, indicating genetic variation in survival and enemy impact.
  • 4 Survival of Phyllonorycter was negatively density-dependent among clones.
  • 5 Survival of Phyllonorycter and Phyllocolpa eleanorae were positively correlated with densities of heterospecific herbivores among clones and parasitism of these species were negatively correlated with densities of the same heterospecific herbivores among clones.
  • 6 At least for Phyllonorycter this positive correlation may suggest either facilitation of survival between herbivore species, which do not share natural enemies, or an apparent interaction caused by host plant genetic variation.
  • 7 Among clones, egg parasitism of Phyllocolpa eleanorae was weakly positively correlated with density of Phyllocolpa nigrita. Since these species share the same Trichogramma egg parasitoid, this interaction could support the hypothesis of apparent competition.

Portia is a web-invading araneophagic spider that uses aggressive mimicry to deceive its prey. The present paper is a first step toward clarifying experimentally the cues that govern Portia's decisions of whether to enter a web, whether to make signals once in a web, and whether to persist at signalling once started. The following conclusions are supported: cues from seeing a web elicit web entry, but volatile chemical cues from webs of prey spiders are not important; seeing a spider in a web increases Portia's inclination to enter the web; after web entry, cues from webs of prey spiders are sufficient to elicit signalling behaviour, even in the absence of other cues coming directly from the prey spider; seeing a prey spider or detecting vibrations on the web make Portia more prone to signal, but volatile chemical cues from prey spiders are not important; once Portia is on a web and signalling, seeing a moving spider and detecting vibrations on the web encourage Portia to persist in signalling; on the basis of visual cues alone, Portia can distinguish between quiescent spiders, insects and eggsacs.  相似文献

A detailed molecular analysis using recombinant DNA technologies is extremely important to our understanding of the phenomena of antigenic variation in the African trypanosomes; however, by itself, it may not completely explain antigenic variation as it occurs in vivo. Several laboratories have demonstrated the ability of one variant population to replace another in vivo as well as the presence of heterogeneous populations of trypanosomes within an individual animal. These two phenomena do not permit us to explain antigen variation solely on the basis of the molecular regulation of variant antigen expression. In addition to studies in molecular biology, it will be necessary to define clearly the differences in growth rates of variant populations and the role of competition between these variants in a single anatomical site. It will also be necessary to determine the influence of various physiological environments on growth rates and the competition between the different variants of a single repertoire. It is concluded that the phenomenon of antigenic variation is a complex problem in ecology and population dynamics as well as molecular regulation. This paper is designated to examine a variety of the ecological parameters presumably involved in antigenic variation.  相似文献
