High seas oceanic ecosystems are considered important habitat for juvenile sea turtles, yet much remains cryptic about this important life‐history period. Recent progress on climate and fishery impacts in these so‐called lost years is promising, but the developmental biogeography of hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) has not been widely described in the Pacific Ocean. This knowledge gap limits the effectiveness of conservation management for this globally endangered species. We address this with 30 years of stranding observations, 20 years of bycatch records, and recent simulations of natal dispersal trajectories in the Hawaiian Archipelago. We synthesize the analyses of these data in the context of direct empirical observations, anecdotal sightings, and historical commercial harvests from the insular Pacific. We find hawksbills 0–4 years of age, measuring 8–34 cm straight carapace length, are found predominantly in the coastal pelagic waters of Hawaii. Unlike other species, we find no direct evidence of a prolonged presence in oceanic habitats, yet satellite tracks of passive drifters (simulating natal dispersal) and our small sample sizes suggest that an oceanic phase for hawksbills cannot be dismissed. Importantly, despite over 600 million hooks deployed and nearly 6000 turtle interactions, longline fisheries have never recorded a single hawksbill take. We address whether the patterns we observe are due to population size and gear selectivity. Although most sea turtle species demonstrate clear patterns of oceanic development, hawksbills in the North Pacific may by contrast occupy a variety of ecosystems including coastal pelagic waters and shallow reefs in remote atolls. This focuses attention on hazards in these ecosystems – entanglement and ingestion of marine debris – and perhaps away from longline bycatch and decadal climate regimes that affect sea turtle development in oceanic regions. 相似文献

Reconstruction of the demographic and evolutionary history of populations assuming a consensus tree‐like relationship can mask more complex scenarios, which are prevalent in nature. An emerging genomic toolset, which has been most comprehensively harnessed in the reconstruction of human evolutionary history, enables molecular ecologists to elucidate complex population histories. Killer whales have limited extrinsic barriers to dispersal and have radiated globally, and are therefore a good candidate model for the application of such tools. Here, we analyse a global data set of killer whale genomes in a rare attempt to elucidate global population structure in a nonhuman species. We identify a pattern of genetic homogenisation at lower latitudes and the greatest differentiation at high latitudes, even between currently sympatric lineages. The processes underlying the major axis of structure include high drift at the edge of species' range, likely associated with founder effects and allelic surfing during postglacial range expansion. Divergence between Antarctic and non‐Antarctic lineages is further driven by ancestry segments with up to four‐fold older coalescence time than the genome‐wide average; relicts of a previous vicariance during an earlier glacial cycle. Our study further underpins that episodic gene flow is ubiquitous in natural populations, and can occur across great distances and after substantial periods of isolation between populations. Thus, understanding the evolutionary history of a species requires comprehensive geographic sampling and genome‐wide data to sample the variation in ancestry within individuals. 相似文献

Tubulin-Based-Polymorphism (TBP) was originally introduced as a novel method for assaying genetic diversity in plants. TBP
is based on polymorphism resulting from the PCR-mediated amplification of the first intron in the coding region of the β-tubulin
gene family. Although, the method was successful in genetic assessment of some plant species and varieties, it suffered from
low number of molecular markers due to limited variation in the first intron of β-tubulin gene family. We have now rectified
this limitation by introducing the second intron of the β-tubulin genes as a valuable source of molecular markers. We show
that the combined use of the two introns substantially increases the number of molecular markers and results in a reliable
assessment of species/varieties relationships. After a preliminary validation on Brassica, this new combinatorial method was tested on species of Eleusine and Arachis. For both, reliable assessment of species relationships were obtained that were consistent with recently published studies
resulting from more elaborated methods including DNA sequencing. Combinatorial TBP is a reliable, reproducible, simple, fast,

The extinct aurochs (Bos primigenius primigenius) was a large type of cattle that ranged over almost the whole Eurasian continent. The aurochs is the wild progenitor of modern cattle, but it is unclear whether European aurochs contributed to this process. To provide new insights into the demographic history of aurochs and domestic cattle, we have generated high-confidence mitochondrial DNA sequences from 59 archaeological skeletal finds, which were attributed to wild European cattle populations based on their chronological date and/or morphology. All pre-Neolithic aurochs belonged to the previously designated P haplogroup, indicating that this represents the Late Glacial Central European signature. We also report one new and highly divergent haplotype in a Neolithic aurochs sample from Germany, which points to greater variability during the Pleistocene. Furthermore, the Neolithic and Bronze Age samples that were classified with confidence as European aurochs using morphological criteria all carry P haplotype mitochondrial DNA, suggesting continuity of Late Glacial and Early Holocene aurochs populations in Europe. Bayesian analysis indicates that recent population growth gives a significantly better fit to our data than a constant-sized population, an observation consistent with a postglacial expansion scenario, possibly from a single European refugial population. Previous work has shown that most ancient and modern European domestic cattle carry haplotypes previously designated T. This, in combination with our new finding of a T haplotype in a very Early Neolithic site in Syria, lends persuasive support to a scenario whereby gracile Near Eastern domestic populations, carrying predominantly T haplotypes, replaced P haplotype-carrying robust autochthonous aurochs populations in Europe, from the Early Neolithic onward. During the period of coexistence, it appears that domestic cattle were kept separate from wild aurochs and introgression was extremely rare. 相似文献

Estrogen receptor activation has been shown to reduce body weight and produce a conditioned reduction in food intake in male rats that is putatively mediated by estradiol's suggested aversive effects. Evidence has shown that the selective estrogen receptor modulator tamoxifen used in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer may also produce changes in food intake and body weight, which are known to impact cancer development and survival. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether tamoxifen produces a conditioned reduction in intake similar to estradiol by producing a conditioned aversion. A one bottle lickometer test was used to examine conditioned changes in sucrose drinking, while the taste reactivity test was used to measure rejection reactions, which serve to index aversion in rats. A backward conditioning procedure that consisted of 3 conditioning days and one vehicle test day was used to examine conditioned changes in 0.3 M sucrose intake and taste reactivity. Our results show that tamoxifen produced a conditioned reduction in sucrose drinking in a one bottle fluid intake test that was similar to the effects produced by estradiol (positive control); however, no active rejection reactions were produced by either tamoxifen (1 and 10 mg/kg) or estradiol. The present results suggest that tamoxifen, at the doses used in the present study, acts as an estrogen receptor agonist to regulate food intake and that the conditioned reduction in intake produced by tamoxifen and estradiol reflects conditioned taste avoidance rather than conditioned taste aversion. 相似文献

The decreased disc height characteristic of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration has often been linked to low back pain, and thus regeneration strategies aimed at restoring the disc extracellular matrix and ultimately disc height have been proposed as potential treatments for IVD degeneration.
