Cross validation (CV) was used to analyze the effects of different environments and different genotypic samples on estimates of the proportion of genotypic variance explained by QTL (p). Testcrosses of 344 F(3) maize lines grown in four environments were evaluated for a number of agronomic traits. In each of 200 replicated CV runs, this data set was subdivided into an estimation set (ES) and various test sets (TS). ES were used to map QTL and estimate p for each run (p(ES)) and its median (p(ES)) across all runs. The bias of these estimates was assessed by comparison with the median (p(TS.ES)) obtained from TS. We also used two independent validation samples derived from the same cross for further comparison. The median p(ES) showed a large upward bias compared to p(TS.ES). Environmental sampling generally had a smaller effect on the bias of p(ES) than genotypic sampling or both factors simultaneously. In independent validation, p(TS.ES) was on average only 50% of p(ES). A wide range among p(ES) reflected a large sampling error of these estimates. QTL frequency distributions and comparison of estimated QTL effects indicated a low precision of QTL localization and an upward bias in the absolute values of estimated QTL effects from ES. CV with data from three QTL studies reported in the literature yielded similar results as those obtained with maize testcrosses. We therefore recommend CV for obtaining asymptotically unbiased estimates of p and consequently a realistic assessment of the prospects of MAS. 相似文献

In this study, we applied time- and frequency-domain signal processing techniques to the analysis of respiratory and arterial O(2) saturation (Sa(O(2))) oscillations during nonapneic periodic breathing (PB) in 37 supine awake chronic heart failure patients. O(2) was administered to eight of them at 3 l/min. Instantaneous tidal volume and instantaneous minute ventilation (IMV) signals were obtained from the lung volume signal. The main objectives were to verify 1) whether the timing relationship between IMV and Sa(O(2)) was consistent with modeling predictions derived from the instability hypothesis of PB and 2) whether O(2) administration, by decreasing loop gain and increasing O(2) stores, would have increased system stability reducing or abolishing the ventilatory oscillation. PB was centered around 0.021 Hz, whereas respiratory rate was centered around 0.33 Hz and was almost stable between hyperventilation and hypopnea. The average phase shift between IMV and Sa(O(2)) at the PB frequency was 205 degrees (95% confidence interval 198-212 degrees). In 12 of 37 patients in whom we measured the pure circulatory delay, the predicted lung-to-ear delay was 28.8 +/- 5.2 s and the corresponding observed delay was 30.9 +/- 8.8 s (P = 0.13). In seven of eight patients, O(2) administration abolished PB (in the eighth patient, Sa(O(2)) did not increase). These results show a remarkable consistency between theoretical expectations derived from the instability hypothesis and experimental observations and clearly indicate that a condition of loss of stability in the chemical feedback control of ventilation might play a determinant role in the genesis of PB in awake chronic heart failure patients. 相似文献

Local blood flow was measured in renal cortex (1 mm below cortical surface) by means of the hydrogen clearance method in urethanized rats. Recording of blood pressure from femoral artery was performed. Crotalus durissus terrificus venom injection (one mg/kg i.v.) significantly decreased cortical blood flow at 10 min, without a significant arterial pressure modification. Posterior injection of mannitol 200 mg induced a significant increase in cortical blood flow, although initial values were not reached. Electron microscopy showed thromboses in the glomerular capillaries 35 minutes after venom injection. It is suggested that the precocious effect of this venom on renal cortical blood flow may be instrumental in the development of the renal acute insufficiency induced by Crotalus durissus terrificus venom. 相似文献

In nature, the complexity and structure of microbial communities varies widely, ranging from a few species to thousands of species, and from highly structured to highly unstructured communities. Here, we describe the identity and functional capacity of microbial populations within distinct layers of a pristine, marine-derived, meromictic (stratified) lake (Ace Lake) in Antarctica. Nine million open reading frames were analyzed, representing microbial samples taken from six depths of the lake size fractionated on sequential 3.0, 0.8 and 0.1 μm filters, and including metaproteome data from matching 0.1 μm filters. We determine how the interactions of members of this highly structured and moderately complex community define the biogeochemical fluxes throughout the entire lake. Our view is that the health of this delicate ecosystem is dictated by the effects of the polar light cycle on the dominant role of green sulfur bacteria in primary production and nutrient cycling, and the influence of viruses/phage and phage resistance on the cooperation between members of the microbial community right throughout the lake. To test our assertions, and develop a framework applicable to other microbially driven ecosystems, we developed a mathematical model that describes how cooperation within a microbial system is impacted by periodic fluctuations in environmental parameters on key populations of microorganisms. Our study reveals a mutualistic structure within the microbial community throughout the lake that has arisen as the result of mechanistic interactions between the physico-chemical parameters and the selection of individual members of the community. By exhaustively describing and modelling interactions in Ace Lake, we have developed an approach that may be applicable to learning how environmental perturbations affect the microbial dynamics in more complex aquatic systems. 相似文献

The current guidelines state that, within the appropriate clinical context, the diagnosis of adult growth hormone (GH) deficiency must be made biochemically using provocative tests. Measurement of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3) levels cannot always distinguish between healthy and GH-deficient individuals. In particular, IGFBP-3 as a marker of GH status is clearly less sensitive than IGF-I and there is general agreement that its measurement does not provide useful diagnostic information. However, the diagnostic value of measuring IGF-I levels has been revisited recently. It has been confirmed that normal IGF-I levels do not rule out severe GH deficiency (GHD) in adults, in whom the diagnosis has therefore to be based on the demonstration of severe impairment of the peak GH response to provocative tests. It has also been emphasized that very low IGF-I levels in patients with high suspicion of GHD could be considered to be definite evidence for severe GHD. This assumption particularly applies to patients with childhood-onset, severe GHD or with multiple hypopituitary deficiencies acquired in adulthood. The development of the science and practice of restoration ecology in Argentina can be divided into three periods. The first was 1992–2004, characterized by isolated restoration efforts, mostly in arid and dry ecosystems, and engaging specific people in the academic, agro‐technological, and private sectors as partially required by national regulations, but also inspired by the 1992 Earth Summit, the 1994 Amendments of the Constitutional Law, and environmental guidelines from investment entities. The second period of 2005–2010 showed significantly greater involvement in international networking and conference contributions. The current period from 2011‐present has witnessed rapid advances and national integration. The country's network Red de Restauración Ecológica de Argentina (REA) was founded in 2012, with seven subnational nodes. In 2014, the 2nd REA symposium was held to determine priority areas for restoration and to generate a National Plan. Public agencies, NGOs and volunteer groups are now actively engaged stakeholders. In 2013 Argentina became a founder member of SIACRE (Sociedad Ibero‐Americana y del Caribe para la Restauración Ecológica) and is organizing SIACRE's 4th international conference (April 2015; Buenos Aires). Restoration ecology in Argentina is ascendant because of long‐term efforts related to strengthening democracy, people initiatives, and strong support from SIACRE, SER (Society for Ecological Restoration), SER‐Europe, and the national networks of Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Moreover, Argentina is now the first country to have updated its Civil Code by integrating the environment as a “legal good,” which reinforces the citizens' rights to demand the implementation of degradation prevention and/or ecosystem restoration measures. 相似文献

ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the serum level of netrin and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-I) in patients with type IΙ diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate the association of their levels with the development of a diabetic complication.Patients and methodsThis study was carried out on type II diabetic patients with and without complications and healthy individuals served as controls. All subjects were submitted to the estimation of serum lipid profile, serum creatinine, urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), visceral adiposity index (VAI), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and detection of serum level of netrin1 and VCAM1.ResultsDiabetic patients with complications had significantly higher serum levels of creatinine, ACR, cholesterol, Triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, netrin1, and VCAM1 than diabetic patients without complications. Likewise, the level of VAI and LAP as markers of excessive body fat were significantly higher in diabetic patients with complications than diabetic patients without complications. The netrin1 and VCAM1 were a significant discriminator of T2DM renal complications with a sensitivity of 96%, 90%, and specificity of 82.7%, 91.3% respectively.ConclusionIt can be concluded that serum netrin1 and VCAM1 correlated significantly with markers of excessive body fat, a renal complication in the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 相似文献
