Morphological analysis of the skull of the subterranean rodent Ctenomys , a highly speciose genus which uses both claws and teeth when digging, shows that for a broad range of species size, scaling was associated with both variation and maintenance of shape. Our results show that the angle of incisor procumbency (AIP), a character largely viewed as an adaptation to digging with teeth, is highly variable. We found a non-significant relationship between AIP and basicranial axis (basioccipital + basisphenoid) length, a measure of overall skull size. Accordingly, both small and large Ctenomys species possess either high or low AIP. A significant relationship between AIP and diastema length, given the rostral allometry seen in Ctenomys , suggests that hypermorphosis to a certain extent influences AIP. However, the roots of the incisor are lateral to those of the cheek teeth and their position may thus shift freely. This observation supports the notion that skull structural design, and to a certain extent rostral allometry, underlies variation in AIP. On the other hand, the positive allometry of incisor width and thickness indicates that, in larger species, proportionately powerful incisors are able to resist greater bending forces. We found that the out-lever arm of the jaw adductor muscles scales with positive allometry against basicranial axis length. However, we found an isometric relationship between in- and out-lever arms. In this case, conservation of skull proportions, regardless of variation in size, is a feature possibly related to the maintenance of an effective tooth digging capability. Functional and ecological data are discussed when assessing the implications of size and shape variation in the skull of Ctenomys .  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. Abstract. The distribution of coumaphos (the active component of perizin), fed to individual honeybees, in the honey stomach, haemolymph, midgut and rectum was studied over time. Concurrently, we investigated changes occurring in the haemolymph volume due to the ingestion of perizin, and we examined the influence of a Nosema apis infection on the survival of bees that had been fed perizin. The maximum amount of coumaphos in the haemolymph was found 4h after ingestion, but it was only 2–3% of the total amount recovered. After 15 min 55% of the total amount of the coumaphos recovered was in the honey stomach and available for distribution within the colony by trophallaxis, while 45% had already passed the proventriculus. Ultimately the coumaphos accumulated in the rectum. The volume of the haemolymph significantly increased in bees which were fed perizin compared with bees which were fed syrup and with non-fed bees. The lethal dose of coumaphos to 3-day-old bees was three times higher than the lethal dose for 18- and 1-day-old bees. The number of Nosema apis spores in the alimentary canal was not correlated with the survival of the bees that were fed perizin. It is concluded that coumaphos can act as a systemic agent and can be distributed to other individuals in a colony through trophallaxis, but these effects are limited to a maximum period of 12h after ingestion.  相似文献

Chemical Signaling in Ciliates   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
ABSTRACT. For long, our knowledge of the biology of ciliate pheromones has long relied solely upon the study of the two structurally unrelated "gamones" identified in culture filtrates of a Blepharisma species. However, the characterization of a number of polypeptide pheromones secreted by Euplotes raikovi and E. octocarinatus has now established that structural relationships of homology usually link these molecules, which is consistent with the genetic basis of the mating type systems evolved by these species. In this context, our growing appreciation of the conserved and variable elements of the pheromone architecture should foster progress in the understanding of pheromone-receptor interactions and thus, provide important clues into pheromone mechanisms of action.  相似文献

Four species of triatomines are known from Chile: Triatoma infestans Klug, Mepraia spinolai Porter, M. gajardoi Frías, Henry & González, and M. parapatrica Frías (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), the last three are endemic. The geographical distribution of M. gajardoi includes the coastal areas in the north of Chile between 18° and 21°S, an area with both a resident workforce and summer‐season visitors. A study was developed to assess the risk of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease by M. gajardoi in hut settlements on the coast of the Tarapacá Region, in particular in Caleta San Marcos and Caleta Río Seco. The study comprised fingerstick sampling of 95 persons, venous samples from 29 domestic dogs and capture of 52 triatomines, from both fishing coves. The samples were analysed by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. The results show that, of the total number of persons studied, 100% were negative for Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) antibodies, 10.34% of canids were positive for the antibody and 5.8% of M. gajardoi were infected to the PCR technique. The presence of this species in areas close to human settlements constitutes a risk to human populations established on the coast of northern Chile.  相似文献

The efficacy of 23 compounds in repelling Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), particularly Culicoides obsoletus (Meigen) females, was determined by means of a Y‐tube olfactometer. The 10 most effective compounds were further evaluated in landing bioassays. The six most promising compounds (including chemical and plant‐derived repellents) were evaluated at 10% and 25% concentrations in field assays using Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps. At least three compounds showed promising results against Culicoides biting midges with the methodologies used. Whereas olfactometer assays indicated DEET at 1 µg/µL to be the most effective repellent, filter paper landing bioassays showed plant‐derived oils to be better. Light traps fitted with polyester mesh impregnated with a mixture of octanoic, decanoic and nonanoic fatty acids at 10% and 25% concentrations collected 2.2 and 3.6 times fewer midges than control traps and were as effective as DEET, which is presently considered the reference standard insect repellent. The best plant‐derived product was lemon eucalyptus oil. Although these have been reported as safe potential repellents, the present results indicate DEET and the mixture of organic fatty acids to be superior and longer lasting.  相似文献

The subgenus Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) (Diptera: Culicidae) includes the primary vectors of Plasmodium spp. in Colombia. Most adult females of this subgenus are difficult to identify in the field using the available keys. With the objective of further investigating the discriminatory power of modern morphometrics, both landmark‐based and outline‐based approaches were explored using the wing venation geometry of 11 Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) species. Wing shape was able to separate the closest species of the subgenus. When the 11 species were analysed together, validated classification scores on average 5.3–8.6 times higher than those expected by chance were observed. These scores computed from the total sample of 11 species were not satisfactory for the recognition of Anopheles benarrochi B, Anopheles oswaldoi s.l. and Anopheles strodei. These sibling species were captured in sympatry. To improve the identification power of the morphometric tool, it was necessary to analyse these species separately from the remaining species. The best classification scores were obtained using a combination of 12 landmarks collected not only on the intersections of wing veins, but also on spots. An outline approach also gave excellent reclassification scores. Another pair of sibling species, collected in allopatry, Anopheles nuneztovari and Anopheles rangeli, also showed high classification scores.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Capturing animals is an essential tool of wildlife management, but the use of capture devices is being affected by public pressures on an international scale. In Europe, and particularly Spain, foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are often captured using traditional methods such as nonlocking Spanish Snares (SS) set in an ad hoc fence line known as an alar, but these traditional European methods are rarely compared to modernly described restraints such as the Wisconsin Cable Restraint (WR). We evaluated rates of efficiency, selectivity, injury, and impacts to foxes and nontarget species when using SS (as traditionally set in an alar) or WR within alars or on trails in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. During 40,372 trap-nights from summer to winter of 2007, we captured 64 foxes, and 8 of 23 potential nontarget species. Our results indicated that WR set in trails were more efficient (0.28 capture rate) for capturing red foxes than SS set in an alar (0.11 capture rate). Relative to injury, foxes captured with the WR in the alar (95.4%), and WR in trails (90.5%), and the SS (90.9%) showed no indicators of poor welfare, and injury score analysis indicated that injuries were of similar magnitude for all capture devices. Overall, the WR set in trails may have performed the best, but all 3 methods are likely sufficient for capturing foxes with minimal injury, acceptable efficiency, and acceptable impact to foxes and sympatric nontarget species. Thus, wildlife managers in Spain and elsewhere can apply our findings to optimize capture and management of foxes.  相似文献

Stegomyia aegypti (= Aedes aegypti) (Diptera: Culicidae) is a species of mosquito that is currently widespread in Mexico. Historically, the mosquito has been distributed across most tropical and subtropical areas lower than 1700 m a.s.l. Currently, populations that are found at higher altitudes in regions with cold and dry climates suggest that these conditions do not limit the colonization and population growth of S. aegypti. During a survey of mosquitoes in September 2015, larvae of S. aegypti mosquitoes were found in two different localities in Mexico City, which is located at about 2250 m a.s.l. Mexico City is the most populous city in Mexico and has inefficient drainage and water supply systems. These factors may result in the provision of numerous larval breeding sites. Mosquito monitoring and surveillance are now priorities for the city.  相似文献
