A large‐scale phylogenetic study is presented for Cucujoidea (Coleoptera), a diverse superfamily of beetles that historically has been taxonomically difficult. This study is the most comprehensive analysis of cucujoid taxa to date, with DNA sequence data sampled from eight genes (four nuclear, four mitochondrial) for 384 coleopteran taxa, including exemplars of 35 (of 37) families and 289 genera of Cucujoidea. Maximum‐likelihood analyses of these data present many significant relationships, some proposed previously and some novel. Tenebrionoidea and Lymexyloidea are recovered together and Cleroidea forms the sister group to this clade. Chrysomeloidea and Curculionoidea are recovered as sister taxa and this clade (Phytophaga) forms the sister group to the core Cucujoidea (Cucujoidea s.n .). The nitidulid series is recovered as the earliest‐diverging core cucujoid lineage, although the earliest divergences among core Cucujoidea are only weakly supported. The cerylonid series (CS) is recovered as monophyletic and is supported as a major Cucujiform clade, sister group to the remaining superfamilies of Cucujiformia. Currently recognized taxa that were not recovered as monophyletic include Cucujoidea, Endomychidae, Cerylonidae and Bothrideridae. Biphyllidae and Byturidae were recovered in Cleroidea. The remaining Cucujoidea were recovered in two disparate major clades: one comprising the nitidulid series + erotylid series + Boganiidae and Hobartiidae + cucujid series, and the other comprising the cerylonid series. Propalticidae are recovered within Laemophloeidae. The cerylonid series includes two major clades, the bothriderid group and the coccinellid group. Akalyptoischiidae are recovered as a separate clade from Latridiidae. Eupsilobiinae are recovered as the sister taxon to Coccinellidae. In light of these findings, many formal changes to cucujiform beetle classification are proposed. Biphyllidae and Byturidae are transferred to Cleroidea. The cerylonid series is formally recognized as a new superfamily, Coccinelloidea stat.n. Current subfamilies elevated (or re‐elevated) to family status include: Murmidiidae stat.n. , Teredidae stat.n. , Euxestidae stat.n. , Anamorphidae stat.rev. , Eupsilobiidae stat.n. , and Mycetaeidae stat.n. The following taxa are redefined and characterized: Cleroidea s.n. , Cucujoidea s.n. , Cerylonidae s.n. , Bothrideridae s.n. , Endomychidae s.n. A new subfamily, Cyclotominae stat.n. , is described. ABSTRACT In accordance with federal regulations, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service developed a postdelisting monitoring plan for the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) designed to detect a change in the number of occupied nests on a national scale. The plan employs a dual-frame approach to the survey design where a list frame (list of known nests) and an area frame (set of survey plots) are used in concert to estimate the number of occupied nests in 5-year intervals over a 20-year period. The plan offers no provisions for changes in list-frame integrity, nor does it contemplate the impact of such changes on survey performance. We used a long-term data set to quantify occupancy patterns for nests in Virginia, USA, and evaluated their influence on integrity of the list frame and performance of the proposed dual-frame monitoring approach. The average annual turnover rate for nests was 0.261, resulting in a rapid decay of the list frame. Decay of the list frame leads to a functional collapse of the dual-frame approach, down to the area-frame survey alone, early within the monitoring time horizon. This early decay of the list frame implies that the area-frame coverage needed to maintain the same statistical power as stated in the monitoring plan would have to be increased by a factor of 3 to 5 beyond that recommended in the current plan. Remedies for this deficiency undermine the cost benefit associated with inclusion of the list frame. We examined response of the dual-frame survey to variation in nest turnover rates and population growth rates and defined a state space where time to collapse is beyond the proposed 20-year time horizon. Because, under realistic estimates of turnover rates, the dual-frame approach collapses to the area frame within the proposed monitoring window, we recommend that the costs of list-frame maintenance be included in the procedure to optimize allocation of survey effort.  相似文献

Abstract: The taxonomic status of the sauropodomorph dinosaurs from the Newark Supergroup of north‐eastern USA is reviewed. The inclusion of the three articulated skeletons from Wolcott’s Quarry, Manchester, Connecticut in a single species is supported. Despite claims to the contrary the Manchester skeletons can be referred to the species Anchisaurus polyzelus, which is based on a fragmentary specimen from Massachusetts. Two autapomorphies: dorsoventrally flattened ischial blades set at a low angle to each other and slender sacral ribs of the first sacral vertebra, link the holotype of A. polyzelus to the Manchester specimens. A revised diagnosis of the species and new skull reconstruction are presented. Recent anatomical observations of A. polyzelus indicate that several character states used to assess its phylogenetic position require revision. However, these are not sufficient to overturn previous cladistic analyses. A revised cladistic analysis continues to find support for Anchisaurus as a relatively derived basal sauropodomorph that lies outside of the clade Melanorosaurus + Sauropoda but is more closely related to it than to ‘core prosauropods’ such as Plateosaurus and Massospondylus.  相似文献

Abstract: Basal sauropodomorphs from the Upper Triassic Los Colorados Formation of north‐western Argentina have been known for several decades but most of them are only briefly described. New postrcanial remains of Coloradisaurus brevis, the most gracile sauropodomorph from this unit, are described here and evaluated within a phylogenetic context. These materials belong to a single individual and include elements of the vertebral column, pectoral girdle, incomplete forelimb, pelvis and hindlimb. These elements share an autapomorphic feature with the type specimen of Coloradisaurus brevis and provide novel and unique features that diagnose this taxon, such as pubic apron with semicircular cross‐section and with a depression on its anterior surface, distal surface of the tibia deflected and facing posterodistally and well‐developed pyramidal dorsal process of the posteromedial corner of the astragalus. Several postcranial characters of Coloradisaurus are exclusively shared with Lufengosaurus, from the Lower Jurassic of China. The inclusion of this information in two recent phylogenetic data sets depicts Coloradisaurus as closely related to Lufengosaurus and well nested within Plateosauria. Both data sets used indicate strong character support for the inclusion of Coloradisaurus and Lufengosaurus within Massospondylidae.  相似文献

DOPAchrome tautomerase (DCT) is known to control the ratio of DHICA/DHI formed within the melanocyte, but physiologic significance of this activity is not yet fully elucidated. In this study the two melanin monomers are shown to inhibit with different efficacy the initial, tyrosinase-controlled, melanogenic reaction, namely conversion of L-tyrosine to DOPAchrome (2-carboxy-2,3-dihydroindole-5,6-quinone). This is demonstrated in the test tube assay system whereby formation of DOPAchrome is catalyzed by i) isolated premelanosomes (PMS), ii) tyrosinase-rich PMS glycoproteins, or iii) tyrosinase purified from fibroblasts transfected with human tyrosinase gene. Both DHI and DHICA suppress the conversion of L-tyrosine to DOPAchrome when added to reaction mixture but the inhibitory effect is far more strongly pronounced by DHI. DHI inhibits both activities of tyrosinase—tyrosine-hydroxylation and DOPA-oxidation—more strongly than DHICA. The different extent of inhibition is shown to reflect i) the ability of the two monomers to compete with tyrosinase substrates for the enzyme's active center and ii) the rate of interaction between melanin monomers and DOPAquinone. Consequently, we demonstrate that the tyrosinase-catalyzed DOPAchrome formation can be modulated by the ratio of DHICA/DHI among melanin monomers with the increased proportion of DHICA resulting in more efficient DOPAchrome formation. These results raise the possibility that DOPAchrome tautomerase plays a role in positive control of the tyrosinase-catalyzed early phase of melanogenesis.  相似文献

Abstract. Speciation in four monophyletic species groups of the mirid genus Lopidea is examined. An analysis of twelve speciation events suggests that vicariance can account for at least 50% of speciation in Lopidea , and the frequency of sympatric host plant speciation may be as high as 25%.
In examples attributable to peripheral isolate speciation, the daughter taxa typically occur in recognized areas of endemism, suggesting a common cause (vicariance) for their origins. In addition, seven zones of disjunction between subspecies and allopatric sister species were identified for Lopidea , which correspond with similar disjunctions between sister taxa in other groups of organisms.  相似文献

Pigmented hamster melanoma tumors growing in situ contain two subpopulations of melanoma cells that have different electrophoretic mobilities (EPM). A mild neuraminidase treatment, which removes sialic acid residues from the cell surface glycoproteins, reduces the EPM of both groups of melanoma cells yielding an electrophoretically uniform population. This shows that the differences in the EPM between the subpopulations of pigmented melanoma cells stem from the different content of sialic acid residues on the cell surface. The relationship between the different EPM melanoma cell subpopulations was, therefore, examined during tumor growth, development, and formation of metastases. The relative content of cells having high electrophoretic mobility, the “fast moving” cells, increases as the tumors grow larger. However, tumors of the same diameter contain nearly the same fraction of “fast moving” cells despite their age. The proportion of the “fast moving” cells is significantly higher in the central part than in the outermost layer of pigmented melanoma tumors. These data suggest that the development of “fast moving” cells is promoted by some size-dependent changes in the intratumor environment. In vivo selection of melanoma cells for their ability to colonize lungs renders tumors that reveal elevated metastatic potential and contain a significantly higher fraction of cells possessing high electrophoretic mobility than the parent tumor. Moreover, the metastatic nodules contain a remarkably elevated fraction of the “fast moving” cells. The reported correlation between the “fast moving” cell fraction and the metastatic potential suggests that the relative content of cells having high electrophoretic mobility may determine the metastaticity of pigmented hamster melanoma.  相似文献
