Museum specimens, particularly old collections, typically lack comprehensive field data and determination of substrate, sampling biases, etc., is problematic. Diversity at the generic level of all identifiable latest Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian) echinoderm remains in major museum collections from the Mons (southern Belgium) and Danish (Jylland (Jutland) and Sjælland (Zealand)) basins were compared to those of the Liège-Limburg Basin. The last-named has been studied in detail, including microscopical analysis of ossicles picked from bulk samples. Echinoids of the Mons Basin show similarities to those of the Liège-Limburg Basin, but crinoids, asteroids and ophiuroids remain poorly known from the former. Echinoderms of the Danish Basin resemble those of similar chalk lithofacies in the Liège-Limburg Basin, despite significant geographical separation. These disparities can be explained, at least in part, by collector bias in sampling methodology, although differences in substrate presumably also had an influence.  相似文献

Melanogenesis refers to the biosynthesis of melanin pigment in pigment cells called melanocytes. Melanins are mixed biopolymers formed during a series of oxidation/reduction reactions that are initiated by the enzymatic hydroxylation of L-tyrosine to L-dopa. In living cells, melanogenesis is limited to melanosomes, the membrane bounded microscopic secretory granules of melanocytes. Melanosomes may be secreted into the environment as, for example, from the squid's ink gland; or be transferred to neighboring cells, such as the keratinocytes in human skin and hair; or they may remain within the pigment cell and change only their subcellular localization, as in the rapidly color-changing dermis of lower vertebrates. Regulation of the melanocytic phenotype involves synthesis of the biosynthetically active subcellular apparatus of melanogenesis, premelanosomes and tyrosinase, and the utilization of the final product, melanized melanosomes, in the translocation and secretory processes mentioned above. Genetic information for this regulation is stored in the nuclear genome whose expression is controlled by the intra- and extracellular environment. As premelanosomes become biosynthetically active, they mature into melanosomes by fusing with vesicles derived from the trans-Golgi network and the plasmalemma, thereby internalizing and incorporating contents and membrane components from inside the cell and the cell surface. In the process, melanosomes become acidified. The thesis pursued in this review explores the importance of the melanosome as the final common pathway of regulation of melanin biosynthesis.  相似文献

Three cultures immobilized by entrapping within alginate gel beads and packed in near-horizontal acrylic columns (15.0° angle) were used for alcohol/malolactic fermentation of grape must. Immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae spp. chablis were placed in the 1st column, S. cerevisiae cells (an alcohol-sucrose-tolerant yeast) in the 2nd and the Lactobacillus delbrueckii cells in the 3rd column. Grape must with different levels of sugar(s), were each fed to the bioreactor columns at dilution rate of 0.74 h−1 and recycled at 37.0C. The percent fermentation efficiency and yield using the 1st and 2nd columns for grape must containing 33.3% sugar(s) were 92.9 and 91.5%, respectively, and the wine had 15.5% alcohol after 23 cycles (∼ 50 h fermentation). The viability of the immobilized yeast cells in the alginate gel-bead was 84%± 4.0. Immobilized Lactobacillus delbrueckii cells were then added to the 3rd column (in series 37.0C) and the three cultures resulted in alcohol/malolactic fermentation of the grape must, evidenced by the high level of alcohol formed and simultaneous transformation of malic to lactic acid. Sensory evaluation of the wine scored high (7.8 ± 2.0 based on a value of 10.0) and indicated the potential of using multiple immobilized cells of two specific yeast cultures and a malolactic Lactobacillus for wine production.  相似文献

The genetic diversity, structure, and relationships of 12 populations of blind subterranean mole rats belonging to four species of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies were examined. Diversity levels and divergence of 19 nuclear microsatellite markers were analysed. Results indicate that the 12 populations fall into two major clusters representing the species pairs Spalax galili (2 n  = 52) and S. golani (2 n  = 54) vs. S. carmeli (2 n  = 58) and S. judaei (2 n  = 60). There is very little gene flow between the species pairs, except for one population (Afiq) of S. carmeli (2 n  = 58), which is located near the hybrid zone between S. golani (2 n  = 54) and S. carmeli (2 n  = 58). Higher values of the mean for alleles per locus, gene diversity, and number of unique alleles were observed for the southern species pair, S. carmeli and S. judaei, than for the northern species pair, S. galili and S. golani . Microsatellite diversity increases southward toward the Negev Desert and is positively correlated with aridity stress. Climatic factors of water availability coupled with temperature account for 76.7% of microsatellite variance. ABSTRACT Increasing demand for backcountry recreation opportunities during winter (e.g., snowshoeing, helicopter-assisted skiing, snowmobiling) in steep, high-elevation terrain has elevated concern about disturbance to brown bears (Ursus arctos) denning on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA. To help identify areas where such conflicts might occur, we developed a spatially explicit model to predict potential den habitat. The model indicated brown bears selected locations for den sites with steep slopes, away from roads and trails. Den sites were associated with habitat high in elevation and away from potential human contact. We then compared areas with the highest probability of providing den habitat with patterns of snowmobile and nonmotorized recreation on a portion of the Kenai Peninsula. We found limited overlap between the 2 recreation activities and potential den habitat for brown bears. At the landscape scale, however, backcountry skiing overlapped more high-quality den habitat than did snowmobile riding. Our results may be used by land management agencies to identify potential conflict sites and to minimize the potential effects of recreation activities on brown bears in dens.  相似文献

Abstract: Ungulate populations in desert environments are thought to be regulated by precipitation. Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) populations in Trans-Pecos, Texas, USA, experienced a 70% decline between 1977 and 2001. The causative factors associated with the decline are unknown but appear to be related to drought. We evaluated the relationships between pronghorn abundance and productivity and precipitation (i.e., raw precipitation, Palmer Drought indices) for the Trans-Pecos district of Texas from 1977 to 2004. Pronghorn productivity (range = 305-4,407) and abundance (range = 5,061-17,266) showed high variability. Precipitation was also highly variable, ranging from 18 cm to 57 cm. Pronghorn abundance was positively influenced by precipitation indices (R = 0.790, P < 0.001). The relationship between fawn production and raw precipitation (R = 0.869, P < 0.001) suggested that fawn production may be more closely related to immediate moisture conditions, whereas pronghorn abundance was more influenced by long-term population trends. Management plans for pronghorn populations in more arid regions should include drought contingencies including reduced stocking rates and harvest quotas.  相似文献

A taxonomic revision of the genus Flagenium Baill. is presented. Flagenium is endemic to Madagascar and comprises six species; three new species are described here ( F. farafanganensis , F. petrikensis , and F. pedunculatum ) and one species ( F. arboreum ) is transferred into synonymy. Each species is fully described, and summaries of distribution, habitat and ecology, and phenology are given; conservation assessments are provided for each species. Flagenium is characterized by having ovaries with at least two erect and two pendulous ovules per locule, which, depending on the species, can display an additional two to four horizontal ovules per locule arranged between the uppermost and lowermost ovules. In addition, Flagenium has a longitudinally ten-ribbed fruit.
