Resonance Raman spectra of chlorophylls dissolved in liquid crystal matrices. II. Order parameters of chlorophyll a in an MBBA + EBBA liquid crystalline mixture

The molecular ordering of molecules embedded in a uniaxial liquid crystalline system has been considered. In particular, planar Chl a molecules in an MBBA + EBBA mixture have been studied by using polarized resonance Raman spectroscopy. The second- and fourth-rank order parameters and the orientational distribution function of Chl a in the nematic MBBA + EBBA liquid crystalline phase are discussed.     

A new model of counterion condensation in polyelectrolyte solutions. III. Theoretical predictions of competitive condensation between counterions of different valences

Our model has been extended for theoretical estimation of competitive condensation of counterions of different valences onto polyelectrolytes in solution. The estimations are compared with those obtained from Manning theory and with experimental data on counterion activity coefficients. The agreement with the data for sodium polystyrenesulfonate/MgCl2, CaCl2 is satisfactory.     

Deficiencies in soviet medicine

On the eve of the 1984 Summer Olympics, a deranged man drove his car at high speed onto a pedestriancrowded sidewalk in a suburb of Los Angeles. The UCLA Medical Center, located two blocks from the scene, received 17 of 51 casualties. One patient arrived in full cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated. Six had minor injuries or temporary hysteria and did not require admission to hospital. The mean injury severity score of the 10 patients who were admitted was 13.6 (range 3 to 48). Three patients required immediate surgical procedures, and two had delayed orthopedic operations. Specialty consultations were needed in orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, and pediatric intensive care. There were no subsequent deaths, although two patients had substantial residual neurologic disability. This episode of unexpected urban violence underscores the need for dedicated trauma services in university centers. Functions of such services include disaster planning, deploying surgical personnel, managing injured patients, and analyzing outcomes.     

Effects of two treatments on semen from different bulls on in vitro fertilization results of bovine oocytes

The semen of six different bulls was used to examine the effects of treatment with caffeine or caffeine plus Ca-ionophre on in vitro fertilization, cleavage and development into morulae of in vitro matured bovine oocytes. In vitro fertilization results (formation of both pronuclei, cleavage and development to >/= four-cell stage were significantly (P<0.01) higher using caffeine plus Ca-ionophre than those using only caffeine. The rates of fertilization and first cleavage were only slightly variable among the bulls. However, the present data showed significant variability in formation of both pronuclei (36 to 75%) of fertilized ova and development to the >/=4cell stage (39 to 71%) by different bulls. Development into morulae of ova recovered from the rabbit oviduct did not show any significant differences in relation to sperm treatments or individual bulls.

Ultrastructural analysis of sperm flagella in two clitellates (Annelida), plasma membrane and periaxonemal area

The region between axonemes and plasma membrane in the sperm tails of the tubincid oligochaetes Tubifex tubifex and Monopylephorus limosus has been studied by means of thin sections of conventionally and tannic acid fixed material, and of freeze-fracture replicas. The main portion of the flagellum in both species showed prominent, regularly repeating bridges connecting doublets to plasma membrane. In correspondence to the doublets, characteristic double rows of intramembrane particles are present, with an arrangement reminiscent of the "zipper lines" described in other species. A well-developed cortical web with a honeycomb appearance underlies the plasma membrane. Glycogen granules are regularly arranged within the cells. An outstanding difference between the two species is to be found in the presence only in Monopylephorus of complex muff-like structures apparently formed by membrane particles and series of teeth embedded in the cortical web. Nothing similar has been found in Tubifex. This difference may be related to the fact that spermatozoa in Monopylephorus are not enclosed in spermatozeugmata as are those of Tubifex.     

Tumour invasion: effects of cell adhesion and motility

Metastasis is the major cause of failure in cancer therapy. Recent studies of the molecular cell biology of the metastatic process have provided new insights into the mechanisms of cell-cell adhesion, cell-substrate adhesion and cell motility that underly invasion by tumour cells. In this review, Van Roy and Mareel discuss the role of proteins with invasion-promoting and invasion-suppressing functions in metastasis.
