Summary Within a population sample of 307 blood donors of Prague the polymorphism of the red cell acid phosphatase has been investigated. Gene frequency estimates are: P^a=0.365, P^b=0.578, P^c=0.057.     

Der Einfluß einiger Hormone auf die heteroplastische Knorpel- und Knochenbildung im Herzmuskel der Ratte

Zusammenfassung Es wird über histopathologische Untersuchungen des chronologischen Verlaufs an der durchSelyes Ventrikel-Ligatur hervorgerufenen Herzspitzennekrose bei Ratten berichtet. In dem der Nekrose verfallenen Myokard setzt alsbald Organisation ein; dann wandelt sich allmählich das Granulationsgewebe in eine zellarme und faserreiche Narbe um. In den subendokardialen Schichten des Narbengewebes entstehen erst Knorpel-, später Knochenherde. Der Prozeß der Knorpelbildung wird nicht von Verkalkung eingeleitet; vielmehr werden zuerst die Fibroblasten zu Knorpelzellen, um die sich dann sekundär Kalziumsalze ablagern; danach spielt sich eine typische endochondrale Ossifikation ab. Schließlich erscheint Knochenmarkgewebe zwischen den Knochenbalken.Triamcinolon hemmt geringgradig die Bindegewebsproliferation, Thyroxin steigert die Knorpel- und Knochenbildung, während Östradiol diese Vorgänge nicht beeinflußt.

The effect of hormones on the heteroplastic cartilage and bone formation in the cardiac muscle of the rat

Summary A chronologic study was made of the histopathologic changes which occur in the cardiac apex of the rat following the application of Selye's ventricular ligature. Organisation in the necrotic cardiac muscle begins soon after ligature. Later, the granulationtissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue which is poor in cells but rich in fibers. In the subendocardial fibrous tissue, cartilage and bone develop. It is emphasized that cartilage formation is not initiated by calcification. Instead, the fibroblasts are converted to cartilage cells and, later, calcium salts are deposited in the matrix. This is followed by endochondral bone formation. Finally, bone marrow appears in the intertrabecular spaces.Triamcinolone mildly hindered connective-tissue proliferation, thyroxine increased cartilage and bone formation, while estradiol did not influence these processes.

Chromosome counts of some Mongolian plants

The paper gives the chromosome numbers of 45 species from 72 Mongolian localities, belonging to the genera:Amygdalus, Asparagus, Astragalus, Cancrinia, Caragana, Chamaerhodos, Chelidonium, Chesneya, Dianthus, Hypecoum, Lathyrus, Lilium, Oxytropis, Papaver, Potentilla, Schizonepeta, Sibbaldia, Thermopsis, Trifolium, Trigonella, Vicia. Chromosome morphology of three species ofChamaerhodos and taxonomical remarks on some other species are added. A new combinationSibbaldia sericea (Grubov) Soják is proposed.     

Underground dry weight in the grassland communities ofArrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960

The meadow plant communities,Arrhenatheretum elatioris alopecuretosum pratensis R. Tx. 1937 andMesobrometum erecti stipetosum Vicherek 1960, were chosen for investigations of the underground plant parts. Apparent differences in underground dry weight and its seasonal changes in both the communities were observed. Differences in the soil environment in different periods of the year are reflected in the character of time changes in underground dry weight. The soil environment affects not only the total underground biomass and their changes in time, but also the activity of soil microflora and, consequently, the decomposition rate of dead underground plant parts.     

Bemerkungen zur Taxonomie vonVicia sepium L.

In der ArtVicia sepium L. kann man in Mitteleuropa und in südlichen Teilen von Nordeuropa drei Varietäten unterscheiden: 1. var.sepium mit breiten Blättchen und einem kahlen bis angedrückt behaarten Kelch, 2. var.montana Koch mit schmalen Blättchen und einem kahlen oder zerstreut angedrückt behaarten Kelch, und 3. var.eriocalyx ?elak. mit breiten bis mittelbreiten Blättchen und einem abstehend langbehaarten Kelch, noch mit einer niedrigen und einer hohen Wuchsform. Bei allen Proben wurde die Chromosomezahl 2n=14 festgestellt.     

Antibacterially active substances

Synthesis of two hydroxy-derivatives of nalidixic acid as a result of microbial transformation was demonstrated in certain species of the genusAspergillus. Aspergillus alliaceus produced 7-hydroxy-nalidixic acid andAspergillus niger 6-hydroxy-nalidixic acid. It was demonstrated that the antibacterial activity of both hydroxy-derivatives (tested inEscherichia coli) was lower than that of the initial nalidixis acid.     

Physiological properties of microbial population as a basis for graphical solution of multi-stage continuous cultivations

A proposal for a graphical solution of the design of a multi-stage continuous culture system is presented. The holding times in individual stages are derived from the reciprocal values of the growth rate and of the product formation rate and plotted against the cell and product concentrations. Characteristic changes of physiologically significant paramaters are then projected on these production curves. Dedicated to Academican Ivan Málek on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

The effect of nucleosides on the induced synthesis of β-galactosidase in non-growing cells ofEscherichia coli

The induced synthesis of β-galactosidase in non-growing cells ofEscherichia coli starving for exogenous carbon and nitrogen sources was stimulated markedly by the addition of any of four nucleosides tested: adenosine, guanosine, cytidine, and uridine. Adenosine was used as a representative of this group of compounds in most experiments. The decrease of ability of the cells to synthesize β-galactosidase, resulting from a prolonged starvation for exogenous carbon and nitrogen, was removed by adenosine. This compound also considerably reduced the inhibitory effect of metabolic poisons on the induced synthesis of β-galactosidase. The blockade of induced β-galactosidase synthesis evoked in aerobically grown cells by anaerobic starvation for exogenous sources of carbon and nitrogen was also significantly reduced by adenosine. The weak transient catabolic repression of induced synthesis of β-galactosidase evoked by glucose in non-growing cells ofEscherichia coli deprived of exogenous carbon and nitrogen sources was prevented by adenosine. The total repression caused by higher glucose concentrations was not influenced by this compound. The results are discussed from the point of view of the role of the energy state ofEscherichia coli cells in the regulation of β-galactosidase synthesis.
