We made the INAA of hair of the common hare (Lepus europaeus Pall.) and of the common vole (Microtus arvalis Pall.) living in the emission zones. Both the hare and the vole are almost exclusively herbivores; they consume relatively large amounts of contaminated food and mirror reliably the contamination degree of the respective ecosystem. The use of free-living animals for the control of the environmental quality may complete effectively the information obtained by examination of habitants. Though the free-living animals lead a rather different way of existence it has been found that the analyses of their hair correlate very well with the analyses of human hair. It may be expected that the changes of concentrations of heavy metals will manifest themselves earlier in animals than in men, because the animals are strictly tied to the local food sources. The hair samples of hares contained increased concentrations of Sm, La, Au, As, Se, Cr, Sc, Fe, Ce, Th and Co. The hair of voles showed increased concentrations of Sm, La, Zn, As, Se, Cr, Sc, Fe, Sb, Ce, Cs and Co. A conspicuous trend towards the cumulation in hair was observed in the following elements: As, Se, Sc and Fe. The serosurveys conducted in the Silica plateau area of the Slovak karst region revealed the presence of specific neutralizing antibody against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in 18% of local inhabitants (33 examined, mostly goats and sheep farmers), 54% of goats (26 examined), 18% of sheep (120 examined) and 13% of cattle (60 examined), against Lipovník (LIP) virus in 30% of inhabitants, 88% of goats, 55% of sheep and 45% of cattle, and against Bhanja (BHA) virus in 27% of inhabitants, 46% of goats, 29% of sheep and 23% of cattle. The results of hemagglutination-inhibition tests with TBE and BHA antigens were analogous. A detailed analysis of these serologic data points to a recent enhancement of the circulation of LIP and BHA viruses and to a very low TBE virus activity in this natural focus of arboviral infections. The immunological surveys of the 32 former "Roznava disease" patients, conducted 25 years after an extensive epidemic of a TBE virus infection that originated in Roznava in 1951, revealed the presence of neutralizing (and also hemagglutination-inhibiting) antibodies against TBE virus in as many as 78% of cases. Antibodies against LIP and BHA viruses were also detectable in the sera of 16% and 9%, respectively, of these individuals. Populations of the ectoparasites examined for the presence of arbovirus comprised 231 Ixodes ricinus, 806 Dermacentor marginatus and 204 Haemaphysalis punctata ticks and 117 specimens of the louse-flies Melophagus ovinus. Two strains of arbivirus that were antigenically related to Lipovník and Tribec viruses belonging to a group of Kemerovo viruses were isolated from male and female I. ricinus ticks collected from cattle. 相似文献

A single X-chromosome balancer-bearingCelegans ♂+, as a founder of a strain (AF1), was isolated directly from Fl progeny of irradiated+dpy-8unc-3/lon-2++ hermaphrodites on the basis of the absence of recombinant F2 categories. The balancer chromosome (Bal-X-1) suppresses recombination over a two-thirds section of the X chromosome (between genesdpy-8 andlet-2) and is associated with a reciprocal translocation between linkage groups (LG) X and I. Animals homozygous for the translocation (szT1(X:1)) are nonviable. Hermaphrodites heterozygous for the translocation segregate male selfprogeny at a frequency of 0.08-0.12.Bal-X-l carries the marker mutationlon-2(e678) and can be detected cytologically. Inhibition of liver prenyltransferase by citronellyl and geranyl phosphonate and phosphonylphosphate
Citronellyl- and geranylphosphonic acids and the corresponding phosphonylphosphates were made and tested as inhibitors of liver prenyltransferase. Kinetic analysis showed that citronellyl- and geranylphosphonylphosphate were powerful inhibitors of the enzyme, and that they were competitive inhibitors with geranyl diphosphate and noncompetitive inhibitors with isopentenyl diphosphate. Two inhibition constants, representing the equilibria [E][I]/[EI] = K5 and [ES1][I]/[ES1I] = K9, have been defined for the inhibitors. For citronellylphosphonylphosphate, the value of K5 was 1.25 microM and K9 was 3.30 microM; for geranylphosphonylphosphate, K5 = 1.50 microM and K9 = 1.60 microM. The phosphonates were very poor linear mixed noncompetitive inhibitors with respect to both substrates of the transferase. 相似文献

Summary Leaf gas exchange, transpiration, water potential and xylem water flow measurements were used in order to investigate the daily water balance of intact, naturally growing, adult Larix and Picea trees without major injury. The total daily water use of the tree was very similar when measured as xylem water flow at breast height or at the trunk top below the shade branches, or as canopy transpiration by a porometer or gas exchange chamber at different crown positions. The average canopy transpiration is about 12% lower than the transpiration of a single twig in the sun crown of Larix and Picea. Despite the similarity in daily total water flows there are larger differences in the actual daily course. Transpiration started 2 to 3 h earlier than the xylem water flow and decreased at noon before the maximum xylem water flow was reached, and stopped in the evening 2 to 3 h earlier than the water flow though the stem. The daily course of the xylem water flow was very similar at the trunk base and top below the lowest branches with shade needles. The difference in water efflux from the crown via transpiration and the water influx from the trunk is caused by the use of stored water. The specific capacitance of the crown wood was estimated to be 4.7 x 10-8 and 6.3 x 10-8 kg kg-1 Pa-1 and the total amount of available water storage was 17.8 and 8.7 kg, which is 24% and 14% of the total daily transpiration in Larix and Picea respectively. Very little water was used from the main tree trunk. With increasing transpiration and use of stored water from wood in the crown, the water potential in the foliage decreases. Plant water status recovers with the decrease of transpiration and the refilling of the water storage sites. The liquid flow conductance in the trunk was 0.45 x 10-9 and 0.36 x 10-9 mol m-2s-1 Pa-1 in Larix and Picea respectively. The activities of lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and elastase were lower in PMNs and AMs from GF and AF Minnesota miniature piglets than in the leukocytes from their CONV counterparts. In the spleen and serum of gnotobiotic piglets only the levels of lysozyme were slightly reduced. Substantially depressed activities of these LEs were found also in PMNs from precolostral piglets in comparison with PMNs from their CONV mother. The bisassociation of GF piglets with Enterococcus liquefaciens and Escherichia coli caused an increase of LE activities in their AMs, spleens, and sera. Fewer LEs were released after phygocytic stimulation with zymosan from PMNs of GF, AF, and precolostral piglets than from PMNs of CONV animals of the same age. Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 forms “plaques” during layer cultivation. The “plaques” were shown not to be caused by the presence of a temperate bacteriophage or by random contamination. The “plaques” and their central microcolonies were used to repeatedly isolate cultures producing an antibiotic substance against the original strainA. tumefaciens C58, other nopaline strains, some octopine strains ofA. tumefaciens and some strains of the related genusRhizobium. The substance is thus a bacteriocin; in analogy to agrocins 84 and D286 it was named agrocin C58. The agrocin is not inactivated by trypsin. Its production by strain C58 was found only on cultivation on solid but not liquid media. The binding of Bacteroides intermedius VPI 8944 to human fibrinogen has been characterized. The binding is time dependent, at least partially reversible, saturable, and specific. On an average, a maximum of 3,500 fibrinogen molecules bind per bacterial cell, with a dissociation constant of 1.7 X 10(-11) M. These bacteria also exhibit a fibrinogenolytic activity which can be partially inhibited by protease inhibitors. Bacteria release fibrinogenolytic activity into the surrounding medium without loss of binding activity, but more pronounced fibrinogen breakdown occurs when 125I-labeled fibrinogen is associated with the bacteria, suggesting that fibrinogen is degraded at the cell surface.
