Summary New features recorded here for the first time include demonstration of the presence of a covering of tiny diamond shaped scales all over the body of the helical cell of the mature spermatozoids of Chara corallina Klein ex Willd. as well as a covering of slightly larger diamond shaped scales over the surfaces of the two flagella which has previously been seen by other authors in spermatozoids of both Chara and Nitella.The arrangement of microtubules in the anterior end of the spermatozoid, as a layer completely surrounding the anterior row of mitochondria resembles that of Chara fibrosa described by Pickett-Heaps 1968 and differs from that described for Nitella missouriensis by Turner 1968; these details are therefore perhaps phyletically significant.Other features such as the partial degeneration of the anteriorly placed flagellar bases are similar to those previously described for these two species although the distance between the bases and the point of emergence of the flagella from the body surface seems to differ somewhat from species to species.The investigation includes observations on the dehiscence of the antheridia and on the emergence of living cells from the spermatogenous filaments.The possible phyletic significance of some of these observations is discussed in a preliminary way.  相似文献

Conditioned medium from high density Chlorella vugaris cultures was freeze dried extracted into ethanol. The ethanol was volatilized and the resulting powder then introduced with C. vulgaris photoautotrophic cultures which underwent asynchronous DNA replication forming cells with two, three, four, and six autospores instead of 2 n characteristic of synchronous DNA replication. These cells were blocked at the division stage of the cell cycle.  相似文献

Immunoglobulin D (IgD) of Atlantic cod has a unique structure   总被引:8,自引:3,他引:5  
 A new immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene with some homology to mammalian IgD was recently cloned from the channel catfish and Atlantic salmon, two species of teleost fish. We have cloned and sequenced a new H-chain gene from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) which has clear similarities to these genes, but which also differs in several ways. The similarities of catfish, salmon, and cod delta to the mammalian delta genes are sequence homology, location immediately downstream of IgM (mu), and expression by alternative splicing rather than class switching. A unique feature of catfish, salmon, and cod delta is the chimeric nature of the gene product, as the μ1 exon is spliced to the δ1 exon. Several unique features of cod IgD were found: (1) a deletion of the δ3, δ4, δ5, and δ6 domains described in catfish and salmon IgD, (2) a tandem duplication of a part of the delta locus including the δ1 and δ2 domains, (3) the presence of a truncated δ7 domain downstream of the δTM exons, and (4) the separation of the duplicated domains by a short exon (δy) which has homology to a conserved part of the transmembrane exon 1 (TM1) of some H-chain isotypes. Mass mortality events caused by pulse anthropogenic or environmental perturbations (e.g., extreme weather, toxic spills or epizootics) severely reduce the abundance of a population in a short time. The frequency and impact of these events are likely to increase across the globe. Studies on how such events may affect ecological communities of interacting species are scarce. By combining a multispecies Gompertz model with a Bayesian state‐space framework, we quantify community‐level effects of a mass mortality event in a single species. We present a case study on a community of fish and zooplankton in the Barents Sea to illustrate how a mass mortality event of different intensities affecting the lower trophic level (krill) may propagate to higher trophic levels (capelin and cod). This approach is especially valuable for assessing community‐level effects of potential anthropogenic‐driven mass mortality events, owing to the ability to account for uncertainty in the assessed impact due to uncertainty about the ecological dynamics. We hence quantify how the assessed impact of a mass mortality event depends on the degree of precaution considered. We suggest that this approach can be useful for assessing the possible detrimental outcomes of toxic spills, for example oil spills, in relatively simple communities such as often found in the Arctic, a region under increasing influence of human activities due to increased land and sea use.  相似文献

Both the Norwegian Spring Spawning herring (Clupea harengus) and the Northeast Arctic (NEA) cod (Gadus morhua) are examples of strong stock reduction and decline of the associated fisheries due to overfishing followed by a recovery. Cod and herring are both part of the Barents Sea ecosystem, which has experienced major warming events in the early (1920–1940) and late 20th century. While the collapse or near collapse of these stocks seems to be linked to an instability created by overfishing and climate, the difference of population dynamics before and after is not fully understood. In particular, it is unclear how the changes in population dynamics before and after the collapses are associated with biotic interactions. The combination of the availability of unique long‐term time series for herring and cod makes it a well‐suited study system to investigate the effects of collapse. We examine how species interactions may differently affect the herring and cod population dynamic before and after a collapse. Particularly we explore, using a GAM modeling approach, how herring could affect cod and vice versa. We found that the effect of cod biomass on herring that was generally positive (i.e., covariation) but the effect became negative after the collapse (i.e., predation or competition). Likewise a change occurred for the cod, the juvenile herring biomass that had no effect before the collapse had a negative effect after. Our results indicate that the population collapses may alter the inter‐specific interactions and response to abiotic environmental changes. While the stocks are at similar abundance levels before and after the collapses, the system is potentially different in its functioning and may require different management action.  相似文献

The usefulness of Göttingen minipigs as models for obesity and obesity‐related pathologies is well established. The low‐grade inflammation associated with obesity involves a range of innate immune factors; however, to our knowledge, the impact of obesity on innate immune factor expression has not been studied in Göttingen minipigs. Therefore, we studied the expression of innate immune genes in liver and adipose tissues as well as serum concentrations of cytokines and acute phase proteins in obese vs. lean Göttingen minipigs. In the liver, of 35 investigated genes, the expression of nine was significantly different in obese pigs (three up‐regulated, six down‐regulated). Of 33 genes in adipose tissues, obesity was associated with changed expression of 12 genes in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) (three up‐regulated), 11 in the abdominal retroperitoneal adipose tissue (RPAT) (seven of these up‐regulated) and eight in the subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from the neck (five of which were up‐regulated). Obesity‐associated expression changes were observed for three genes in all adipose tissues, namely chemokine (C‐C motif) ligand 3‐like 1 (up‐regulated), CD200 molecule (down‐regulated) and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (up‐regulated) with interleukin 1 receptor antagonist being the most highly regulated gene in both VAT and RPAT. Looking at patterns of expression across the three types of adipose tissues, obesity was associated with an increased number of acute phase proteins differentially expressed between adipose tissues and a decreased tissue‐specific expression of cytokines and chemokines. In contrast to obese humans, no changes in serum concentrations of haptoglobin, C‐reactive protein, serum amyloid A, tumor necrosis factor‐α and interleukin 6 were found in obese Göttingen minipigs.  相似文献

Anthropogenic factors, including climate warming, are increasing the incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases worldwide. Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic parasites can have severe impacts on host survival, thereby altering the selection regime and inducing evolutionary responses in their hosts. Knowledge about such evolutionary consequences in natural populations is critical to mitigate potential ecological and economic effects. However, studies on pathogen-induced trait changes are scarce and the pace of evolutionary change is largely unknown, particularly in vertebrates. Here, we use a time series from long-term monitoring of perch to estimate temporal trends in the maturation schedule before and after a severe pathogen outbreak. We show that the disease induced a phenotypic change from a previously increasing to a decreasing size at maturation, the most important life-history transition in animals. Evolutionary rates imposed by the pathogen were high and comparable to those reported for populations exposed to intense human harvesting. Pathogens thus represent highly potent drivers of adaptive phenotypic evolution in vertebrates.  相似文献

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by abnormal cell growth and one of the major reasons for human deaths. Proteins are involved in the molecular mechanisms leading to cancer, furthermore they are affected by anti‐cancer drugs, and protein biomarkers can be used to diagnose certain cancer types. Therefore, it is important to explore the proteomics background of cancer. In this report, we developed the Cancer Proteomics database to re‐interrogate published proteome studies investigating cancer. The database is divided in three sections related to cancer processes, cancer types, and anti‐cancer drugs. Currently, the Cancer Proteomics database contains 9778 entries of 4118 proteins extracted from 143 scientific articles covering all three sections: cell death (cancer process), prostate cancer (cancer type) and platinum‐based anti‐cancer drugs including carboplatin, cisplatin, and oxaliplatin (anti‐cancer drugs). The detailed information extracted from the literature includes basic information about the articles (e.g., PubMed ID, authors, journal name, publication year), information about the samples (type, study/reference, prognosis factor), and the proteomics workflow (Subcellular fractionation, protein, and peptide separation, mass spectrometry, quantification). Useful annotations such as hyperlinks to UniProt and PubMed were included. In addition, many filtering options were established as well as export functions.
