Nitrogen and Phosphorus Limitation of Phytoplankton Growth in New Zealand Lakes: Implications for Eutrophication Control 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We examine macronutrient limitation in New Zealand (NZ) lakes where, contrary to the phosphorus (P) only control paradigm,
nitrogen (N) control is widely adopted to alleviate eutrophication. A review of published results of nutrient enrichment experiments
showed that N more frequently limited lake productivity than P; however, stoichiometric analysis of a sample of 121 NZ lakes
indicates that the majority (52.9%) of lakes have a mean ratio of total nitrogen (TN) to total phosphorus (TP) (by mass) indicative
of potential P-limitation (>15:1), whereas only 14.0% of lakes have mean TN:TP indicative of potential N-limitation (<7:1).
Comparison of TN, TP, and chlorophyll a data between 121 NZ lakes and 689 lakes in 15 European Union (EU) countries suggests that at the national scale, N has a
greater role in determining lake productivity in NZ than in the EU. TN:TP is significantly lower in NZ lakes across all trophic
states, a difference that is driven primarily by significantly lower in-lake TN concentrations at low trophic states and significantly
higher TP concentrations at higher trophic states. The form of the TN:TP relationship differs between NZ and the EU countries,
suggesting that lake nutrient sources and/or loss mechanisms differ between the two regions. Dual control of N and P should
be the status quo for lacustrine eutrophication control in New Zealand and more effort is needed to reduce P inputs. 相似文献

In this study, the relative growth, size–weight relationships and size at onset of maturity of the brown crab Cancer pagurus were investigated in the Isle of Man. For the analyses of relative growth and size at onset of maturity, the samples were collected seasonally between autumn 2012 and spring 2013 using several methods: pot surveys, dredge and trawl surveys, market surveys and shore surveys. Results showed that allometric growth occurred in the chelipeds of males (n?=?87) and in the abdomen of females (n?=?222). Four different measures of maturity (behavioural, functional, morphometric and physiological) were examined. With respect to the behavioural maturity, the smallest female crab found with a sperm plug measured 110?mm CW, whereas in terms of functional maturity the smallest ovigerous female had a CW of 134?mm. Based on direct observations of gonad maturity, 50% of females were mature at 108?mm CW, whereas 50% of males were mature at 89?mm CW. The size at the onset of maturity measurements of female and male C. pagurus based on gonad development is smaller than the current minimum landing size (130?mm), and therefore this suggests that the current minimum landing size is an adequate management measure. 相似文献

In the present study, a new series of 2-[4-(pyrimidin-2-yl)piperazin-1-yl]-2-oxoethyl 4-substituted piperazine-1-carbodithioate derivatives (2a-n) were synthesized and screened for their monoamine oxidase A and B inhibitory activity. The structures of compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic methods and some physicochemical properties of new compounds were predicted using Molinspiration and MolSoft programs. Compounds 2-[4-(pyrimidin-2-yl)piperazin-1-yl]-2-oxoethyl 4-(4-nitrophenyl)piperazine-1-carbodithioate (2j) and 2-[4-(pyrimidin-2-yl)piperazin-1-yl]-2-oxoethyl 4-benzhydrylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate (2m) exhibited selective MAO-A inhibitory activity with IC50?=?23.10, 24.14?µM, respectively. ABSTRACTCancer is a common cause of death worldwide. Approximately 80% of cancer patients use complementary or alternative medicines for treatment. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), the main active component of propolis, exhibits cytotoxic, antiproliferative and anti-cancer effects. Despite its anticancer effects CAPE exhibits no known harmful effects toward normal cells. We investigated the effects of CAPE on angiogenesis, apoptosis and oxidative stress using MDA MB-231, N2a and COLO 320 cell lines and CAPE treatments at 24 and 48 h. A two dimensional cell culture system was used and the findings were evaluated by an indirect immunohistochemical method and H-scores were calculated. CAPE was effective for all three cancer cell lines. After 24 and 48 h, we found a significant decrease in live cells and increased stress in the cells based on e-NOS and i-NOS levels. 相似文献

The antioxidant activity of some amido-carbonyl oximes containing a C=O and –NH–R adjacent to the oxime group, [Phenyl-C(=O)-C(=N-OH)-N(-H)-Phenyl(-R)] where R= H, 4-chloro, 4-methyl, 4-methoxy, 3,4-dichloro, 3,4-dimethyl, 3-chloro-4-dimethyl, 3-chloro-4-methoxy, naphthyl and an amido-carbonyl dioxime were investigated in vitro by ferric thiocyanate, total reducing power by potassium ferricyanide reduction, 1,1-diphenyl-2- picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH·) free radical scavenging, ferrous ions chelating, superoxide anion radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity assays. Abstract Random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) were used to study the genetic variation of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis isolates causing wheat tan spot. Two independent experiments were conducted in 2002 – 2003. In 2002, 40 isolates collected in Russia (Krasnodar region, Bashkiria), Germany, and the Czech Republic were studied and 35 unique RAPD genotypes were identified. Most of the genetic variation (72%) was observed within populations and 28% between them. In 2003, 69 new isolates from Russia (Dagestan, North Osetia, Bashkiria), Germany, and the Czech Republic were studied and 47 unique RAPD genotypes were identified. As in 2002, most of the genetic variation (75%) was observed within populations and 25% between them. Total gene diversity in each group ranged from 0.67 – 1.00 for 2002 and was 1.00 for 2003. The average gene diversity was estimated between 0.13 and 0.20 in 2002 and between 0.07 and 0.18 in 2003. A dendrogramme based on genetic distances between isolates illustrates that the variation is distributed on a small scale (0.3 – 4.0%). Estimated FST values and clustering of isolates on dendrogrammes suggest that groups of isolates from Bashkiria and groups of isolates from Dagestan and North Osetia are separated from others and may be considered as different geographical populations. No clear differentiation between isolates from other sites was revealed. 相似文献

Interferons are important proteins for the immune system because of their antiviral, anti‐proliferating and immunomodulatory activities. Therapeutic value of these proteins against certain types of tumors caused interest and investigations aimed to obtain highly purified interferons. Molecular imprinting is an efficient method for purification with high selectivity, specificity and good reproducibility. In this study, we utilized advantages of molecular imprinting technique for the purification of interferon from human gingival fibroblast culture. For this purpose, interferon α‐2b imprinted poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) cryogel (hIFN‐α‐MIP) was prepared. Optimum adsorption conditions were determined, and maximum adsorption capacity of hIFN‐α‐MIP cryogel was found as 254.8 × 104 IU/g from aqueous solution. All interferon measurements are expressed as International Unit (IU), which is a unit measurement used to quantify biologically active substances like interferon based on their biological activity or effect. Selectivity experiments were performed using competitive proteins and repeated adsorption–desorption studies showed that the adsorption capacity maintained almost at a constant value after ten cycles. For the purification of interferon from human gingival fibroblast culture, fast protein liquid chromatography was used and the specific activity of the purified interferon α‐2b on HeLa cell line was found between the values 3.45 × 108 IU/mg and 3.75 × 108 IU/mg. Environmental pollution with metals and xenobiotics is a global problem, and the development of phytoremediation technologies for the plant-based clean-up of contaminated soils is therefore of significant interest. Phytoremediation technologies are currently available for only a small subset of pollution problems, such as arsenic. Arsenic removal employs naturally selected hyperaccumulator ferns, which accumulate very high concentrations of arsenic specifically in above-ground tissues. Elegant two-gene transgenic approaches have been designed for the development of mercury or arsenic phytoremediation technologies. In a plant that naturally hyperaccumulates zinc in leaves, approximately ten key metal homeostasis genes are expressed at very high levels. This outlines the extent of change in gene activities needed in the engineering of transgenic plants for soil clean-up. Further analysis and discovery of genes for phytoremediation will benefit from the recent development of segregating populations for a genetic analysis of naturally selected metal hyperaccumulation in plants, and from comprehensive ionomics data--multi-element concentration profiles from a large number of Arabidopsis mutants. 相似文献
